Pneuma 46: Amber Spire

I had made a shadow clone that hopped out of the carriage and used a [Dimensional Anchor] to return to my home in the jungle and would run back to Zanyr to draw a receiving end of a teleportation circle. I am not taking any risks here; we’re teleporting back the moment I detect bullshit.

I had my tails prepare several backup plans in case the teleport fails. I did noticed something strange though. Gregory’s shadow was pointing east. It always used to point west. Maybe my suspicion was correct, it didn’t always point west but it points to something. There was a lot of space between the elven village and here, afterall.

Yoo Greg, what’s the deal with your shadow, its pointing east this time.

He looked at his second shadow and made it disappear.

I have no idea; it appears from time to time.

How about you stop ignoring the problem and do something with it? I think it’s pointing at something, which means you should go check it out.

    You reckon?

    I facepalmed.

Well after this go find out your race’s responsibility and what the deal is with your shadow.

I will, thank you for the reminder

I swear this guy… only remembers things when it suits him.

Hey I heard that! You’re not any different! How about that time in Boshi town when you forgot you had a dragon friend!

What is he up to actually?

No clue, I completely forgot about him. I’ll try summoning him when we take another break! How long do these horses want to take to get us there!

Elliana looked at the spire and then at the horses. “I think we will arrive there in 4 more days.”

Zzz nobody has time for that!

Come on Agnis it’s good to take things slow from time to time, especially since we tend to get into trouble, are you that eager to jump into trouble?

In that case! How about we don’t go there and you go find out your stuff right now!

Unacceptable! We need to see that ancient wonder!

Let’s go on an adventure together!

The horses took their 6th break since we had left yesterday, lazy animals. I stomped on the ground to summon Tero. We waited and waited and waited.

    He’s not coming…

I’m not surprised, dragons aren’t known for being particularly useful…

“What do you have against dragons?”

They live in their own world and it doesn’t work out well for anyone else near them.

He was quite useless yes, he did have the intimidation factor though.

He was quite funny; I do wonder why he had images of our mothers…

They seemed to have been quite popular in their days.

I was trying to find out what was going inside of the spire when Raishin started bothering me.

    What’s in there?

I can’t tell its covered in ancient technology. There is a shattered glass dome around it though.

How do you know it’s a dome if its shattered?

Glass shards are sticking out of the ground that suggest that whatever was around it was a dome. Maybe not as big as the one in Event Horizon but big nonetheless.

So, we fix the dome and it’s done?

I don’t think so it has to be anything the Yttroz Industries can’t or didn’t come up with.

Can they even repair ancient technology?

Probably not, which gives us a whopping 0% chance to fix this ourselves.

“So, what is the plan, Greg?”

We looked at Greg.  Uhm, we might be able to find out why it stopped working.

Just say that you just want to see it.

    I want to see it…

    See wasn’t that hard!

    So easy.

So uhh these horses go quite slow indeed, mind bringing us there Agnis?

    I thought you’d never ask!

I grabbed everyone with my tails.

    “What about these horses?”

    Giddyup! Go back home!

Raishin slapped the horses which turned around and ran toward Zanyr.

    There fixed!

We reached the spire in no time thanks to the Agnis express.

Whoa it looks way bigger up closely; this glass looks thick though.

Enormous glass shards, as thick as we are wide were scattered around the spire.

“What could even shatter glass as thick as this?” Elliana said as she sent out a wave of nature energy to scout out the area.

I don’t know but I also don’t want to find out.

I made a shadow clone, which used [Fade].

Greg was inspecting the shards and exclaiming ''fascinating''.

This is not glass, it’s many times stronger than normal glass.

So, it’s super glass? Still sounds like it’s glass.

Well yes but it’s not the brittle substance that we’re familiar with.

So, the danger level just skyrocketed? Great, just what we needed.

    Watch out for the glass!

If you are careless enough to walk into glass that’s as thick as you are wide, you deserve to get cut…

    He has a point…

Raishin walked backward, admiring the tower and walked into a shard and cut his arm.

    Ouch!

    Wow that’s a new record.

“You must have done that on purpose right?”

I am afraid that was purely on accident, let’s get closer, where there is less glass.

    Super glass!

    Whatever…

The spire seemed to be made completely out of amber and it had a strange ring tightly wrapped around it at the halfway point.

Oh, I see! That ring must have moved up and down the spire, creating static electricity, the spire might have a mechanism to store and discharge it!

Greg held up 2 fingers with his left hand and made a ring a ring with his right index finger and thumb and moved the ring up and down to demonstrate the mechanism.

    Looks lewd!

I get the idea, Greg but Raishin is right, try to find a different way to demonstrate it next time.

Greg looked at his hands, turned red and put his hands in his pockets.  Anyways, we’ve seen this before Agnis.

    Oooh!

You have no clue what I’m talking about do you?

I will after you tell me!

This was also an image in that book we found I that underground library. It also had an image of Event Horizon remember?

Ugh, that library, I think I remember. So, does that mean we will encounter them all at some point? I did find the floating fortress.

Oh, I would love to visit that one! But it’s possible, the image had the spire with a glass dome around it and the tip of the spire discharging lighting in every direction, which got blocked by the dome.

“So, is it possible that the spire still works but that it has been disabled because the dome is broken?”

Oh, lightning flying off in every direction would quite suck, you might be on to something Elliana.

Then this place being dangerous might be a good thing.

But you still want to go inside to take a look?

    Correct!

I guess, Greg is the reckless brother now who needs to be stopped.

I am not reckless! And why do I need to be stopped.

Well, you know how everything always goes wrong when we do things? We might find a baddie, nuke it, it goes boom and he goes ‘Haha, great mistake adventurers! I was the only one keeping this spire inactivated!” he then goes boom! And the tower turns into a tower of death!

    We all fell silent.

    “Maybe we should go back…”

Yeah, I’m with Elliana, this could totally happen to us.

But! Fine… but let’s just look! If we encounter some monster or enemy we run!

    Let’s go!

Ugh, I’m sure were going to regret this.

“I am a bit curious too,” The gate of the tower was busted open so we could enter easily. I got cold shivers the moment I stepped inside.

    Hmm? What’s up Elliana?

“Huh? What? I didn’t say anything.”

    Oh.

We were in a large hall and the middle of the spire had an enormous revolving staircase going up to the next floor.

How did they make all of this from amber! The ancients surely were masters in their craft!

Greg walked around and took out a notepad and made notes and drawings

Huh this place is quite boring, let’s go to the next floor!

    Wait I’m almost done!

I heard something strange, as if someone was talking in the distance or a whisper.

    Did you say something Raishin?

Nope! But I think I’m finally going crazy! I’m hearing voices!

You were already crazy but I hear them too.

Elliana perked her ears. “Hear what? I don’t hear anything.”

What’s the point of those ears if you don’t use them…

I smacked Raishin.  I agree but that’s rude to say out loud!Stolen from its rightful place, this narrative is not meant to be on Amazon; report any sightings.

    “Hey!”

Hmm what did you say Agnis?

Greg, you doofus, I’m over here.

Greg became pale.  Then who was talking to me just now?

    A ghoooost!

But ghosts have been confirmed to be spirits, so Agnis should be able to see them. I also don’t feel anything.

    Nope no spirits here. Oh…

I looked at the leyline current under the tower, it was quite girthy and filled with lightning energy, this would create a great power spot for lightning spirits, yet there were none. My suspicion started to grow. It also reminded me of that Elliana didn’t hear the buzzing sound in that dungeon.

Elliana, I have a strange question, what is the relationship between elves and fairies?

“Uhh, they are obnoxious, our race had several fights with them I think 800 or 900 years ago. They were quite easy targets for us.”

Hmm, so they might have adapted…

    “What’s this about?”

No nothing, just thinking out loud.

Wait you also know how fairies look like Elliana? Tell me!

“I don’t know how they look like but from what I heard; they are disappointing.”

    Can confirm.

Ugh! Why won’t anyone tell me!

Ok let’s go to the next floor!  Greg said as he had finished drawing and nerding out.

You still haven’t had enough? What about 99% of the rest of this main floor?

We can do that when we’re about to leave! I’m curious!

I am convinced we won’t be taking the way down out but the teleport out. We took the stairs up and the whispering became louder but it was still difficult to understand what it was about.

The next floor was quite dark and Raishin tripped over something.

Ow! What is this? Agnis link us up!

I linked everyone up, revealing the floor to those who can’t see in the dark.

Rails? This place has a train! Let’s find it!

These ancients are insane, a train in a tower?

    Fascinating!

Greg needs to find other words he can use instead of ‘Fascinating’ Oh it’s not a train it’s like a mining cart!

Were they mining amber? What are these for?

    These voices are annoying.

    “Why can’t I hear them!?”

You haven’t gone crazy yet, give it some time.

We inspected the cart when Elliana screamed. “Oh, you scared me. who are you”

“I am an adventurer but I lost my team.” A short black-haired woman appeared out of nowhere. She looked like she was an Unstoppable Beast and was holding a mace.

You didn’t kill them yourself, did you?

“Of course not!” She said. She looked like a human but didn’t have an issue seeing in the dark. Very suspicious.

    Ohh, let’s find your party!

Hold on! Don’t you think this is suspicious? Didn’t the emperor make sure that we could get in here? That leaves a short window for adventurers to enter here.

Hmm you have a point; we want an explanation.

“Well, we saw the guards clear away and got curious.”

Something about this woman irked me.

“Why didn’t you wait on the main floor, you won’t find anyone in this darkness. How can you even see in this darkness by the way?” Elliana said. I noticed that she slowly reached for her bow.

    “[Night Vision].”

Awfully convenient, do you know where you lost your team?

“I think so, I think it was this way.” She started to walk in the direction we were originally headed.

    Wait! Let’s take the cart!

    Really?

Trust me! there is a good reason for it!

Yes yes! The cart! Come on Greg!

    Fine!

The 4 of us climbed in the cart and Raishin extended his hand to the strange woman.

“I will walk, but thank you”

Are you sure they didn’t ditch you because you’re boring?

    Greg smacked him.

She started to walk and Raishin used wind magic to push the cart.

    So slooow!

    Walking would go faster.

“I am confident in my running speed.” The woman said pridefully.

    Go for it!

The woman was indeed a fast runner and Raishin sped up the cart. The whispering seemed to get louder and the heavy footsteps of that woman seemed to confirm my suspicions.

A sudden wave of nausea rolled over me and I got yanked out of the cart as if I was attached to a wire and it had been pulled tout. I dropped 4 ice cubes behind me and swapped my buddies with them and the woman. I drew Nilah and held the blade at her neck.

Now tell me, who are you exactly?

I saw her lick her lips. “My name is Ralina.”

You are deceiving us, aren’t you?

“Of course not, I assure you.” The tone of her voice dropped at ‘I assure you’ and I cut her head off.

    Guys we’re leaving!

    Huh what?

    Wait!

I helped my shadow clone in [Fade] to complete the teleport circle and we teleported back to the plaza in Zanyr.

    What why!?

    “Why did you kill her!?”

I will explain later. Let’s go to a place where we can talk.

We went to the AA and got 3 rooms. We were gathered in Raishin’s room. Nobody wanted to share a room with him because he was so messy so he had a room by himself.

Did you guys see how I got yanked out of the cart?

    Yes, what was that about?

That was my [Dimensional Anchor] kicking in. I can’t be forcefully moved to another dimension or anything similar to a different dimension.

“Is that why you wanted to go with the cart?”

Hmm, walking is quite voluntarily, did you know this would happen?

I had a suspicion, that woman…is what you would call a fairy. She looks different from the ones I’ve encountered and she sounds different but there is no mistake, she was a fairy.

So that’s what you meant with that they were disappointing… I expected large beautiful wings, them being a bit prettier and stuff!

I will let you keep that dream.

You never told us what happened with your encounters with the fairies.

Trust me, you don’t want to know, but I will drop a hint for you Greg. Scythe dog.

Huh what kind of hint is that?

Greg turned pale.  I see, no Agnis is right. It’s a good thing we got out of there.

Huh what? Why? I don’t get it.

    “So, we were in danger?”

Regardless of if fairies are dangerous or not, getting lured in another plane or dimension is an easy way to never return. It is possible that the rest of the towers interior had been moved to a different plane, if we wouldn’t have Agnis then…

    “Then what?”

    Boshi Town 2.0!

    Probably.

“I never heard the complete story about that.”

Raishin and I looked at Greg.  What?

Hey Agnis didn’t say that you had a new game?

I was just thinking about that! Don’t forget to tell her the whole story Greg! Bye!

Raishin and I left the room and went into my room.

To think he never told her, what is he even doing?

No clue. I hope he doesn’t leave out anything.

His memory isn’t as shit as yours.

    Hey!

So those voices, were they also fairies? My intuition told me that the voices were bad news.

I don’t want to destroy your fairy dream.

So, it is…So no fairy for you as girlfriend…

Certainly not, I would prefer them not fairy.

Well, I will have to go for plan K!

Wait plan K? wat happened with the others?

    They failed so I…

    The power went out.

    What?

Let’s lock Greg and Elliana in the room and check out what’s going on.

    Good plan!

Raishin locked the door to his room. Greg seemed to be banging on the door but we ignored it. I put some Dawnlights in front of the door so that he couldn’t [Shadow Meld] out.

    Hehe you’re evil.

    I know right!?

We went to the lobby to find out what was going on. An important looking AA employee was calming the crowd. “Guys I want you all to stop panicking! It is just a blackout. We will try to procure enough electronium to get the lights running. Don’t worry, the vital functions of the AA are still operational, it’s just the non-vitals that are having this problem.”

    Electronium problems already?

Seems so, what’s worse is that it doesn’t seem to be known yet that Yzs has gone poof, we might want to avoid big cities when that knowledge goes public.

Wait! That means that plan K till Z have failed!  Raishin collapsed to the ground dramatically.

    My life’s work…

Stop being so dramatic, I won’t die without a girlfriend.

He grabbed my collar.  You certainly will! My intuition tells me so!

Your intuition is quite useless sometimes.

    It’s always useful!

Then how does it suggest to get this problem fixed?

It tells me to ask again after 5 working days.

    So useless…

We went outside and started to look around. The AA was still doing fine, most of the city was without power. This wasn’t Itris so the population was relatively fine but I wonder for how long.

Raishin do you think this is our problem?

Why would it be our problem?

Good question, do you think your infinite energy thing can help here?

Powering the whole country? Are you trying to kill me?

    I guess that’s a no.

I can still get physically exhausted you know! I’m not a monster!

Hmm I will see if I can find out how to fish that country back, no promises.

Are you going to visit your cousins?

After ghosting them in the elven village? Hell no! but maybe I should…

    Hehe and get…

I smacked Raishin.  I knew that’s what you were going to say. I will just give up if I fail, the chicks in the Floating lotus have more experience than me, they will surely find something out.

Do they even know what is going on?

Good point. I will send a shadow clone.

I made a shadow clone that tugged on a [Dimensional Anchor] and returned to the elven village. It kicked out fruit stealing elders and started to run south and dove into the Aurelia river. It might be able to sneak into Aquini Kingdom just like we did the last time, via the river.

Right, I think I’m going to improve my [Dimensional Anchor] and see what I can do about this lost country.

    Ohh I smell adventure!

One thing though. We should go shopping.

    Why?

I pointed at the stores nearby.  Panic hasn’t set in yet so the supplies and stores are relatively safe, but when it gets known that this is going to be life for an unforeseen time, everything will get raided. Are you ready to go on a shopping spree with me?

Will you also buy stuff for me?

    Of course!

Raishin and I spent the next 2 days clearing out most stores in Zanyr, we also went to cities close by and bought up as much as we could. We don’t know for how long the continent will be like this. It is always better to be safe rather than sorry.
