Justin paused as hebed through Be''s hair, looking toward the phone screen.
"Be, do you recognize the number?"
"No."
"Should we answer it then?" Justin asked, brows furrowing.
Typically, Be never answered calls from unknown numbers, and it was rare for her to receive them.
However, her heart throbbed with a sense of anticipation this time. She felt like ignoring this call might mean missing out on something crucial. "Hello," Be answered, her voice gentle.
"H-Hello."Belongs to (N)?vel/Drama.Org.
On the other end of the phone, a timid, soft, and gentle voice of a young woman emerged, sounding slightly simr to that of her younger sister. Be and Justin exchanged nces. Then, she quickly put the phone on speaker and began recording. "May I ask who is calling?"
"Is this Ms. Be Thompson?" The girl asked softly.
"Yes, this is Be Thompson speaking."
"I... I''m Rachel Mead."
The couple tensed up, especially Be, whose heart pounded like a drum, her fingertips trembling and her palms sweating.
Justin gazed intently at her, holding his breath. Then he took her delicate hand and ced it over his chest, reassuring her. "Rachel, you finally called."
Be''s voice was warm and friendly, deliberately avoiding formal titles to create a closer connection. "I''ve been waiting for your call every day, and finally, you''ve reached out." Justin''s eyes narrowed in disbelief, staring at Be''s barely concealed excitement.
She said she had been waiting for Rachel''s call, which implied she must have had the opportunity to meet and speak with Rachel before this. Otherwise, why would she say such a thing?" But when had they connected? How had he not noticed at all?
"You''ve been waiting for my call every day?"
Rachel paused, her voice soft and frail, "Ms. Thompson, if I never reached out to you..."
"Then I''d still be willing to wait. The choice to contact me is yours, but the decision to wait is mine," Be responded with a determined gaze, each word saturated with resolve. There followed a long silence on the other end of the line.
However, Be extended considerable patience to the caller. She remained silent, patiently waiting.
Justin often admired how Be et ine could maintain suchposure. She was always willing to humble herself and endure hardships to achieve her goals. She never let her privileged background make her feel superior or entitled to the things she had.
Such patience was something Justin reserved only for Be. With others, hecked the same persistent patience she exhibited.
"Ms. Thompson, I called to tell you that... I''m ready to testify as a witness and identify Charles Iverson as a rapist." Rachel''s voice choked up, her words trembling as if forced through gritted teeth, each filled with profound sorrow and anger.
Justin''s eyshes fluttered intensely, his heart raced, and his jaw clenched.
At that moment, a wave of overwhelming emotions surged through Betta. Her lips trembled as she fought hard to control the urge to cry, seftly saying, "Alright, as long as you''re willing to do so. The president of the Salvador ou Corporation and I will support you all the way."
Justin''s heart seemed to endure a forceful impact, contracting violently and throbbing intensely.
His impoverished childhood and the fragmented nature of his family had Kimto made it difficult for him to open up fully or empathize with anyone other than those he loved.
Yet, at this moment, the intense trembling of his heart, apanied by a mixture of sorrow and bitterness ghawing at his chest, was surely a form of deep empathy, right?
"I''m currently under strict supervision by my mother. Even when I go out, she feels the need to apany me, e to e leaving me with almost no personal space. However, I can try to sneak out to see you guys after she falls asleep at night."
