Chapter 364

The man had an aura that could fill a room, and those dark eyes of his seemed like they could see right through you. His gaze brushed over the bowl on the table beforending on Selena''s slightly pale cheeks. "Why are you suddenly taking medicine?" he asked.

Ava froze, a cold sweat breaking out across her back.

Selena''s heart was doing somersaults, but she kept her face calm. "Ava noticed I was looking a bit off," she replied casually, "so she made me some herbal soup to perk me up."

She kept her eyes fixed on the man, not even blinking.

Everett narrowed his eyes, scrutinizing her. "Is that so?"

"If you don''t believe me, Mr. Everett, feel free to have it tested!" Selena shot back, her voiceced with sarcasm. She mmed the bowl back on the table with a sharp clink, feigning annoyance. The tension in the room was palpable.

Trying to ease the situation, Ava piped up, "Sir, Ma''am, I took it upon myself. These herbs are from my own garden. My daughter-inw was weak after giving birth, and this soup helped her recover. I figured it might help thedy too." "If it''s not right, I... I won''t make it again. I''ll just toss this one out!" She moved to grab the bowl.

"Forget it," Everett said with a dismissive wave. "If it works, let her try it. She does look pretty frail." His voice dropped on thest few words, tinged with an ambiguous undertone.

Before anything significant could happen, she''d be out of breath, and if it went on a bit longer, she''d be half-dead. She really did need some strengthening.

Selena caught the meaning behind his words and silently gritted her teeth.

    What a shameless jerk!

Ava understood too and looked at her increasingly thin mistress with sympathy.

Everett checked his watch and then turned to Selena, shifting gears, "You''ve got fifteen minutes to get ready. We''re heading out."

    Heading out? Where to?

    Selena frowned, puzzled.

Everett didn''t borate, just tapped his watch, reminding her of the time, and then headed upstairs.

Once he was gone, Ava almost copsed but steadied herself by gripping the dining table, urging, "Ma''am, please drink it."

    Selena nodded, "Thank you, Ava."

It must have been tough for her!

Ignoring the bitterness, she downed the soup in one go.

She headed to her room to change, quickly scribbling a note on a sticky pad and slipping it into her clothes. After checking in the mirror to make sure it wouldn''t be seen, shedeft the room.  en

Downstairs, Everett was already leaning against the car, waiting.

Today, he hadn''t brought the driver, and he was dressed all in ck, looking so serious that Selena

couldn''t help but nce at him a few

    times.

    What was this all about?

He opened the passenger door for her, shielding her head with his hand as he helped her in, then leaned over to buckle her seatbelt. Everything seemed so natural and close.

The only difference was, Selena watched with a cool detachment, her heart no longer fluttering.

He acted like nothing had happened!

The car pulled away from the vi, soon hitting the highway and speeding toward the outskirts.

Watching the scenery whip by, Selena''s grip on her seat tightened as she guessed their destination. Sure enough, an hour and a halfter, they arrived at thergest cemetery in the suburbs.

They got out of the car, and Everett reached for Selena''s hand. She hesitated but then let go of all ker resentment and bitterness, choosing not to resist.

The morning had been bright and sunny, but now clouds had gathered, and a fine rain was beginning to fall.

Everett fetched an umbre from the trunk, opened it, and therge ck canopy sheltered them both as he led her forward.

They stopped in front of a freshly erected tombstone, with a baby''s ultrasound picture on it and the name "Mateo" engraved. Selena stared, her mind knowing her child was alive, but her eyes couldn''t help but well up.This is property ? of N?velDrama.Org.
