The Xuanwu Gate was made up of two forts and one gate. It was located due north of the imperial pce, and was the only passage leading from the rear to the Taiji main pce.
The gate was divided into threeyers, its depth was nearly one hundred zhang. East and west inside the gate, one each on the left and right, there was a fort, surrounded by solid perimeter walls.
