Thanks to the driver’s excellent skills, they dodged most of the bullets and kept the car moving.
Even then, the situation was not in their favour.
Gu Jinzhi pulled out a walkie-talkie and said, “Now!”
Suddenly, a few modified military vehicles came speeding from behind them.
The machine guns fitted on the hood fired in quick session, mowing the enemies down.
“Go faster.”
Gu Jinzhi ordered the driver, who obliged and soon left the enemy troop far behind them.
Wen He could still hear gunshots from the ambush site. She eximed in awe and amazement, “General, you sure got us covered.”
She had no idea that Gu Jinzhi had hired so many bodyguards.
The man in question looked at her and smiled haughtily. “This is the power of an intelligent mind.”
“...”
Alright.
So he might just be a little smarter than her.
As they continued their way through the front line, Wen He and Gu Jinzhi encountered a few more attacks from the enemy.
Gu Jinzhi’s hired muscles were the only reason they managed to reach the first lookout post safely.
He noticed that Wen He was troubled by how pervasive the enemy forces were within their country and dly exined to her, albeit with a touch of bleakness.
“The border has always been chaotic and the front line stretches for thousands of kilometers. Even if we set up a barbed fence perimeter all the way and have soldiers patrol the border every single day, it is still possible for the enemies to find their way in. Besides, who is to say that the enemy forces did not send their spies into our country back when there was peace between us?”
Wen He nodded in realization.
“I see.”
“You don’t have to be too concerned about it,” Gu Jinzhi said encouragingly. “We are now very close to the military encampment. Those gangsters won’t risk attacking around here.”
He looked into the distance and pointed at a tiny ck dot. “That’s the army base.”
Wen He followed his finger and saw it too. “We’re finally here.”
“My men cannot follow us there. I will have them wait for us in South City as backup.”
Gu Jinzhi took out his walkie-talkie and asked his men to retreat.
Once that was done, Wen He repeated her earlier sentiment, “You should go with them.”
Gu Jinzhi patted her on the shoulder and did not reply directly to her suggestion. Instead, he said mildly, “Don’t worry, smart people are usually the ones who survive till the end.”
“...”
Since the man was too stubborn to ept her advice, Wen He decided to try a roundabout way to force him to leave.
“Gu Jinzhi, the first guarded perimeter is just a few hundred meters away and we will be inspected by the officers at the lookout post. Yang Yi issued my clearance papers and military credentials, so they will let me pass, but they will not do the same for you. You should...”
Leave.
Gu Jinzhi raised an eyebrow in tossed something from his pocket to her.
“Take a look at that.”
Wen He took the papers and stared.
“A medical officer?!”
What the f*ck?
Since when was he a soldier?
“Gu Jinzhi, did you falsify these?”
Gu Jinzhi’s eyes blinked in displeasure at her suspicious re and replied, “It’s just military credentials. I can get one for myself anytime.”
After all, as a member of the Lin family, he only needed to donate some of the family’s medical research findings to the military in order to obtain those papers.
Wen He saluted him with a fist and palm. “I yield.”
Gu Jinzhi had prepared everything for their trip, what more could she do to stop him?
Their 4WD stopped at the lookout post. The soldiers examined their papers and let them through and even pointed out a shortcut to the encampment.

Wen He thanked the officer and continued ahead with Gu Jinzhi. They passed through a few more lookout posts and were thoroughly inspected and searched before they finally reached the huge encampment at the border.
By then, it was alreadyte at night.
“Identify yourselves!”
Wen He had just stepped out of the car when she found a few dozen gun barrels pointed straight at her.
She was about to call Huo Chen’s phone when she noticed Song Shou walking past with a pile of documents in his arms.
Her eyes lit up as she waved at the man. “Song Shou!”
The man in question looked up at the mention of his name.
He was greatly surprised to see that it was Wen He and dashed toward her while signalling the guards to lower their weapons.
“Ma’am, why are you here?” He asked urgently in a whisper.
“I’m here to see Huo Chen.”
Wen He looked around and saw soldiers everywhere in the camp. The atmosphere in the base was tense and made her feel wary.
“Where is he? Tell me!”
“...”
Song Shou opened his mouth hesitantly but did not reply.
“Tell me now!”
Wen He panicked and grabbed him by the cor. “Where is he? I heard from Yang Yi that he is injured. Is he in recovery now? You must take me to him!”
“I’m afraid that is impossible,” Song Shou answered and shook his head. “Half an hour ago, he received word of an attack from the enemy and left to handle them.”
“What?! He’s still injured!”
Song Shou stayed quiet. No one could force the major general to change his mind.
He led Wen He and Gu Jinzhi to the center of the base and assigned a room for them to rest.
“Ma’am, the major general’s room is right next to yours and the operations room is on the opposite side. I will have someone inform you when he is back, until then please have some rest.”
Wen He wanted to say more, but she noticed Gu Jinzhi hinting at her and assented quietly with a nod.
“Alright.”
After that, Song Shou left them to attend to his duties.
Wen He sat on the wooden bed and her mind went nk.
Gu Jinzhi saw her pitiful state and raised an eyebrow. “He’s still alive, isn’t that good news?”
“You’re right!” Wen He pped herself out of it. “That should be enough!”
She was very worried, but she managed to stay calm and wait patiently in her room until Huo Chen’s return.
Nevertheless, after two days, Huo Chen did not return.
Frustrated by helplessness, Wen He stayed awake untilte at night, when there was suddenly an outburst of joy and cheering in the base.
“The major general is back! We’ve won!”
Wen He leapt out of bed and rushed out of her room.
However, the base was too crowded for her to spot Huo Chen.
After failing multiple times to push her way through the crowd, she retreated quietly to the sidelines.
Later, the crowd gradually dispersed and Wen He finally saw Huo Chen.
He was dressed in a cammie and covered in splotches of mud.
The heavy downpour in recent days got him drenched and left him in a sorry state.
Nevertheless, he maintained a professional and steady look on his face and kept his back straight, like a rifle that would not bend under pressure.
So long as he was with the army, they would obliterate anyone in their way.
Emotions overwhelmed her as she finally set eyes on him.
“Aren’t you going to him?”
Gu Jinzhi asked cooly.
For some reason, the close proximity between them made Wen He hesitant.
“I’m going back.”
She bit down on her lips and was about to turn away.
Just then, Song Shou spotted her.
“Ma’am!”
Wen He looked up and straight into a pair of calm eyes...
