Chapter 5: Hunger and change

Sophia woke up by the rumbling of her stomach.

“Ugh” She groaned when she felt pain all over her body. Her stomach, left arm and back especially hurt. She opened her eyes to see that she was in the same spot she-

“Huh” She let out a dumb sound. Isn’t she supposed to dead? She clearly remembered not being able to breathe. How come she can see through both of her eyes. Wasn’t her face supposed to be pummeled by that guy?

Sophia felt a sudden burst of anger towards that man. She wanted to rip him apart and eat his delicious flesh-

She shook her. What the hell was she thinking? Eating a human? What is she, a cannibal?

Speaking of food, she felt so hungry. Now that she was aware of her extreme hunger, Sophia couldn’t stop thinking about it. She started examining her surroundings.

It seemed she was unconscious for a few hours as it was getting dark.

It was as she saw before losing consciousness. No sign of life in the entire area. The earth was so dry it cracked. In the distance she could see a few sparse dead trees.

She wasn’t going to find something to eat here.

Sophia then smelled something delicious. She drooled as she smelled the most delicious smell she ever smelled!. Her head snapped in that direction. She rapidly rose from the ground and sprinted in that direction.

Sophia lost all rationality as she ran. She didn’t notice the changes that her body underwent. She didn’t even notice her not getting tired even after a full minuteof sprinting.

It was a great achievement for someone who didn’t exercise their body.

She soon got out of the region where everything was dead and the forest looked like an actual forest in the middle of fall.

When Sophia reached the place, she didn’t even recognize the man’s body that was getting eaten by a flock of hare’s.

The hare’s looked relatively the same as the ones Sophia would recognize. They looked slightly bigger. Their bloodshot eyes stared at the intruder as they showed sharp, bloodied teeth and hissed.

Sophia completely lost it at that point. All that she thought about was the feast that was strawn in front of her. She opened her mouth impossibly wide, her human teeth morphed into the same ones the hare’s had. She then roared at her food.

The hare’s didn’t seem to be allies, as over half of them fled and the remaining three decided to fight her.

They started running at her in three different directions. One in front, one on the right and one on the left. Instead of just standing there, Sophia sprinted at the hare in front of her.

There was no strategy involved, she was just so hungry that she couldn’t wait for the hare to arrive.

They reached each other in less than two seconds. The hare lunged at Sophia. She responded by stepping to the side and opening her mouth impossibly wide again. The hare couldn’t stop its lunge as Sophia’s mouth reached its side. Her mouth clamped shut and it went through its muscles and bones. The hare let out a whimper as its body was bitten in half, some of its little organs in Sophia’s mouth. Not even chewing, she swallowed the lump of flesh in her mouth. Her throat swelled slightly when she did.

This only took five seconds, but by then the other two hare’s reached Sophia. The hare on the right was now facing Sophia, so she put her attention to that. As it wanted to headbutt her stomach, it prepared to jump. The hare wanted to use its strong back legs to make it jump fast enough so it wouldn’t end up like the other hare. But, before it could jump, Sophia moved and grabbed it by the neck. She squeezed and blood spurted out as its neck was crushed.

The one that was on the left was faced with Sophia’s back figure as she bent down. It clamped its sharp nails onto her. It then bit into her shoulder.

Sophia growled and instinctively moved something inside of her. The hare screamed as it let go and fell to the ground as its face and paws started melting. Sophia ignored its wails and started devouring the hare with the crushed neck.

She soon moved to the first hare she killed and swiftly devoured it as well. Sophia then turned towards the hare who literally turned into goop. She went on her hands and knees and her head moved towards the sickly green substance. She started slurping the goop, and in even less time than it took to eat the other hare’s, it was all gone.

Finished, Sophia burped and then slowly turned her head towards the half eaten corpse of the man. She stood up and moved towards it. But with each step she took, her body slowed. She slowly gained back control of her body. When she reached the body, Sophia''s teeth morfed back into normal human teeth and barely stopped herself from feasting on the corpse.

She stepped back and looked around her. She saw two bloodied patches were she ate the two hare’s. A patch where the fallen leaves withered and the dirt blackened was also there where she, uh, drank that hare.

Sophia wanted to vomit but couldn’t. She didn’t actually feel anything, even when she got back control. She found this ‘normal’ but it clearly wasn’t! What was happening to her?! Even now, she was constantly finding reasons to not eat that corpse. It should''ve been the other way around!

Tears were streaming down her face. “Great. I’m now a monster and potential cannibal.” She whimpered.

Sophia moved her hands to wipe away her tears and then remembered that they were bloodied. “Oh right. I’m naked as well.” She lamented. Feeling even more gloomy. She used her arms instead of her hands to wipe away her tears. Stolen content warning: this content belongs on Royal Road. Report any occurrences.

“What the hell?!” She yelled in outrage when she saw the tattoo on her left arm. ‘Who decided to write a book on my arm?!’ She screamed inside, her depression caused by things before she lost consciousness and her recent trauma of ‘eating things alive’ all but forgotten.

It was exactly like she thought it was. Weird words and symbols were branded from her wrist to her shoulder. Worse, it seemed like gibberish. She couldn’t understand what these words were saying.

Sophia sighed. If she looked at it more closely, it looked prettier. Yes, a lot prettier. She wanted to grab her hair and yell out her frustrations, but she didn’t want to attract anything over here. It would probably be best to leave now.

As she moved, Sophia noticed that her hair was white…

“Noooooooooooooooooo!!!!” She screamed, horrified. Her hair was snow white. It grew to waist length aswell for some reason.

She dropped to her knees and pounded her fists on the ground, screaming curses all the while.

“Not the hair! Why the hair?!” What had she done to gain such an injustice?!

After several minutes passed of Sophia’s pounding on the ground, she stood up more depressed than ever. Why did it have to be white? It definitely wouldn’t look nice on her! Luckily, she could still color her hair. Now that she thought about it, having white didn’t seem as depressing as she thought.

Sophia shook out of her thoughts. She needed to move. There was a problem though. She was naked and didn’t have a weapon.

“Ah!” She remembered the knife she used to stab that guy.

A sudden flood of emotions raged within Sophia as she remembered the things he did to her and the things she did to him.

She wasn’t going to tell this to anyone, ever.

She shook her head. Now was not the time for her to dwell on this. When she’s somewhere safe, Sophia would get plenty of time to cry out her pain and frustrations.

She very quickly found the knife. It layed next to the body, the blade covered in some intestines. She was horrified that she thought it looked quite delicious. What the hell was happening to her?

“Oh” She suddenly remembered something very important.

“What?” She had a suspicion this might’ve had the answer as to what happened. It’s a good thing she remembered…

Sophia was disturbed by all the things that changed. Also, her strength, speed and stamina were obviously higher than before, but nothing really changed there. She wasn’t sure what all of these new things meant. She tried focusing on ‘Deathtouched’ to see what would happen.

    Deathtouched

You have sacrificed one important part of your body(spine) to replace it by a body part of a specific undead(Boneyard) to become a half undead being.

Along with some other benefits to that particular species of undead, you also receive a racial skill of the same undead.

She widened her eyes when the information poofed in her head. She immediately swept her hand to her back, attempting to feel if there was something off. Luckily, she didn’t feel some horrible disfigurement.

So she was part undead now… Sophia didn’t know how to feel. The hunger for flesh and the changes to her body was because of this, but… She briefly remembered that horseman and that giant figure made of bones. When she woke up, both of them were gone. Even that huge field of bones where the giant was standing was nowhere to be found.

There was one thing that didn’t make sense though. It said that she sacrificed her spine, but Sophia didn’t remember doing that. Did she have memory loss?

Now that she found the cause, she decided that there were still a few things she needed to do now that she found out that focusing on the word gave her an explanation.

She felt embarrassed for not thinking about it before.

    Blessing of Pestilence

You have been blessed by Pestilence, one of four undead horseman who serve Hel.

You receive one of the various skills Pestilence accumulated in the past.

“Pestilence?” Sophia remembered the horseman before she lost consciousness. She wasn’t really into religion, but weren’t the four horseman and Hel from completely different beliefs? Or did the System make a mistake and it was supposed to be hell?

She shook out of her thoughts. They were probably different from the various mythologies that were told. If they were really Gods, Sophia hoped she wouldn’t meet them again. If she remembered correctly, those two beings although different, had one thing in common. They weren’t exactly nice people…

Sophia stopped thinking about mythical beings. It wasn’t as if they would help her.

She then focused on her attributes and class. She wasn’t going to skip the ones she was sure of though. She could still be wrong.

The explanation that class brought was simple to understand. It was like a job or your specialty and it would be automatically filled when you reached level 10. So, if you specialized in brute strength, the resulting class would be of that nature as well.

Strength was as Sophia thought. It increases your strength.

Dexterity increased how nimble you could be with not only your hands and fingers, but your body.

    Agility was speed.

    Endurance was stamina.

Intelligence didn’t make you smarter as Sophia previously thought. It increases your mana pool, which you need for using magic and certain skills. It would be something she would frequently use, as she had Venom and that Bone manipulation skill which probably needed it.

Perception increases your awareness. Your senses enhance the more points you put into it.

Skills was a broad term used for the various abilities you gain while fighting or doing something like crafting. Or you could receive them like she did.

Sophia wanted to put her focus on the three skills she got next, but was interrupted by a distant roar. She whipped her head in that direction and then turned her head towards the body. In her haste to find out what happened, she forgot about the delicious smell the body was giving out. If she found it delicious, other things definitely would.

Sophia hurriedly dismissed her status screen and went on her way towards the forest pathway. When she reached there, she would find out about those skills and then decide where she should put her unallocated stat points.
