Defending the Array

The first demons swarmed through the hole in the door. The Security team and the ducks engaged the attackers, using melee weapons and fire breath to beat them down as they funneled in. Null joined in as well, landing some punches successfully while missing others as the demons dodged his hits. Vane was also in the melee, wielding his battle hammer to strike down any demons that tried to rush the array at the back of the room.

    Vane cursed.

"We got boomers trying to get in. I''ll take care of it. You all hold back the regular ones."

Null nodded and continued working with the security team to hold back the demons. Meanwhile, Null saw a boomer rush into the hole, only to be slammed right back out by Vane. Another explosion shook the area. Fortunately, it appeared that the explosion took out most of the demons outside, because the number of demon''s trickling in slowly died down until things were quiet. Vane went to check in with Willis.

"Willis, this is Vane. We just repelled an attack on the Second shield array. The Security door is shattered. The array is intact. Over."

"Copy that. Those demons were most of what remained from the attack on the First Shield Array. Ember is finished up with the Third Shield Array and is moving to assist the Colonel. The remnants from the third shield array are in route to your position. Security teams are tied down mopping up the demons around the ship. You''re going to have to continue defending until Ember and the Colonel can make it to you. Over"

"Copy that. We will defend the array. Out"

Vane turned towards Null and the Security Team.

"You all heard the man. More demons are in route. Let''s get ready to welcome them. Wouldn''t want to give them a poor reception."

Vane and the security team set up positions in front of the door. Null took up a position next to Vane.

Hey, think we got time to set up some barricades in front of the door?

"No point. With Boomers in the mix, anything we put in front of that opening will just become shrapnel pointed directly at us."

Yeah... Guess that makes sense then.

It didn''t take long for the action to start back up again, with more demons starting to trickle in through the door. The cycle repeated much the same as last time, with Null and the security team fighting the demons in fierce melee, the ducks roasting any demon unfortunate enough to encounter them, and Vane hitting all the boomers out the door before they had a chance to detonate. Suddenly, Null saw one of the boomers manage to dodge Vane''s swing, and then to Null''s horror, it detonated on the spot, flinging Vane across the room, and blowing what remained of the door wide open.Ensure your favorite authors get the support they deserve.     Next thing Null knew, more demons were swarming in. The melee was quickly growing more chaotic as the number of demons swarming in grew. Fortunately, the ducks were holding the line, angrily quacking as they roasted the demons. Null took a moment to glance back towards Vane, only to get decked be a demon hitting his suit directly in the head. Within moments he had four demons pounce on him, clawing at the suit. Trying to pull the demons off of him to little effect, Null figured he was done for until suddenly, a very bloody, very angry looking Vane appeared, killing the demons swarming Null and pulling Null to his feet, before proceeding to rejoin the defense.

"Damn it Null! Didn''t anyone ever teach you to keep your eyes on the fight?"

Null kicked a demon away from himself.

Sorry about that. I was worried about you.

Vane nodded while continuing to smash demons with his hammer.

"You can''t worry about anyone if you die. Remember that."

Null nodded, punching a demon directly in front of a duck. The demon didn''t survive very long.

I will keep that in mind.

The fight continued for another minute of fierce melee until Vane once again found himself cursing.

    "More Boomers!"

The larger hole in the door allowed multiple boomers to charge in at once. Null felt like time slowed down as he saw two boomers heading directly for Vane, one boomer directly for the security team, and one boomer directly for a large group of the ducks. Trusting that Vane could deal with the two boomers, Null tackled the boomer heading for the security team. It exploded, sending Null across the room, slamming him into a wall. To his relief, the security team was fine. Vane also dealt with the boomers attacking him with little issue, quickly hitting both of them back into the crowd of demons outside. Two more explosions rang out. Then suddenly, a final explosion rang out, and Null realized that the last boomer had reached its target, taking out most of the ducks. Out of all the ducks, only two had managed to survive.

Fortunately, it looked like the explosions had dealt a significant blow to the demons. The number of Demons pouring through the door slowly decreasing as the piles of demon bodies slowly grew. Null really had to hand it to the security team. They were definitely really good at their job, working together as an effective team to eliminate several demons. Vane also continued to tear through them with his battle hammer despite the injuries he suffered from the explosion. The two remaining ducks continued to roast all the demons that they saw, quacking with even more rage than before. Null couldn''t help but wonder if his senior core had put some kind of berserker rage feature in place. As he once again dodged a demon''s attack, Null delivered a swift counter punch, ending the demon.

Suddenly, Null saw something absolutely shocking. A very familiar, very large demon entering the room. It was quite injured, missing one of its eyes, missing an arm, and having half of its chest area blown apart such that the ribs were visible. But Null knew exactly what it was. After all, it was kind of difficult to forget the first Demon champion you ever lay eyes on.
