The women walked the mud road with slow steps. In her hands, she carefully held a bundle which occasionally moved. Dressed in grey and brown, she blended into the background and carefully made her way to a large building at the edge of the slums. Right then, the bundle started cooing and laughing and the woman held it up to look at her child.
A midnight dalliance had left her angry at herself for making a drunken mistake and at the unborn child. She had made up her mind to give the child up the day it was born but a mother’s love had other plans. The minute he came she fell in love and tried her best to raise him but it was not enough.
She looked around, hawkers sold street food and children played outside the homes. Even Though the slums were close by , the area was clean and there were no thugs intimidating people for money. “Well the Bairds have always dealt a heavy hand to any problems that came their way, that''s the only reason they rule this city for so long”, the women thought. The bundle started crying, clearing her mind and making her look down. She had tried for three months, performing in different places while trying to take care of her son. But not any longer, she knew this was the best for both of them and she had to go ahead with it even if it was the hardest thing she ever had to do. As she got near the building she saw the sign, “Bairstone City Orphanage” and stepped up to the door. Before she lost her nerve, she set the baby down. Crying, she placed her mother’s amulet and a paper with a single word next to the baby. She kissed the child on his head, turned and walked away, never looking back.If you discover this narrative on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen. Please report the violation.

Administrator Blythe POV:
Blythe saw the women with a bundle approach her orphanage, knowing her anguish and indecision yet did not say or move. Nearly 80 years old she had known the loss of pain and betrayal, so she did not judge a mother for giving up her son. Money was getting tighter, with the kingdom going to war with the goblins but the children had a roof over their heads and did not starve. Well, it looked like there was going to be another mouth to feed from tomorrow.
She walked down to the entrance and watched the women walk away never looking back. Once she was out of sight, Blythe picked up the baby and the amulet and picked up the note. It held a single world. Blythe walked back in and looked at the laughing child, “Well little Kairen, I have a feeling you are going to be a memorable little brat.”
