1 | I’m… Dead?

Gaming is fun. It’s always been my hobby ever since my father and mother passed. So why the hell am I playing these games for my bullies!

Eli had four phone stands on his desk. He tapped furiously on each of the screens. Magikus Online is an MMORPG where you can sell or buy gear for your characters. It’s also notorious for its shitty drop rates.

“Eliii~ you can handle one more phone, right?”

Eli looked at the familiar voice. It was Jay Hughes. Eli couldn’t answer as Jay placed his phone on one of the phone stands.

“I want you to get me the legendary sword for the new boss. Spring break is here. If you don’t get then you know what will happen,” Jay leaned down to whisper in Eli’s ear.

Eli’s body shivered as the words entered his ears. One week to get the sword. Easy enough, right? Eli thought as he tapped on the phone screens. Two more years until I get out. This year and next year. Eli sighed as he ran his hand through his black locks.

Eli felt a sharp, stinging pain behind his head. He looks behind and grits his teeth.

“Are you gritting your teeth in front of me?”

    “No… wait—!”

Eli’s body flew out of the chair. The other students whipped their heads to see the commotion. Blood trickled down his nose; Eli’s hand went to cover his nose.

“Listen here,” a foot was placed on Eli’s chest. “For gritting your teeth at me. Now, instead of the legendary sword. I want the legendary equipment, too,” Jay takes off his foot.

The other students’ faces were pitiful. They quickly went back to chatting and playing games. The teacher came into the room and looked at Eli on the floor.

“Stop playing around, kids. Eli, get up,” the teacher dismissed the apparent bullying. Eli felt the pitiful gaze of the teacher. This damn corrupt school. Eli slowly stood up, wiping his nose with his sleeve.

I can’t do anything. Eli thought to himself. He asked his big brother to help, but he quickly dismissed him.

Eli arrived home, tears swelling in his eyes. “Jack! Jack! They’re bullying me. Please help me,” Eli falls to his knees in supplication. Jack’s back was facing Eli. He took a bottle of water and drank it.

“You come crying for my help? You’re pathetic, little brother,” Jack sauntered over to him, looming over Eli’s lithe form. “Don’t tell anyone that I am related to you. You’re pathetic; you’re fifteen. Grow up,” Jack’s said, dismissively. His shirt was unbuttoned, revealing his tattoos.

    “But—“

Jack opened the door and stepped outside.

“You’re a piece of shit! Mom said that you should take care of me! Dad said that brothers should stick together!” Eli cried out. Jack stood quiet for a few seconds before slamming the door.

    [Present]

The end of the school day had finally arrived. Eli quickly packed his things and rushed home. I only have a week! Eli thought as he sprinted towards home. He quickly became tired and rested on the wall for a few seconds.

He arrived home and opened the door. He turned on the lights and saw no one, typical. Jack is always gone, doing whatever he does. Eli rushed to his room and threw his backpack on the floor. Jay had given him his account password.

He turned on the computer and booted up the game. He quickly types the username and the password. “New update?” Eli thought to himself as he opened up the new announcement.

    <Legendary Drop-Rates: .05% > 0.001%>

“W-what? No!” Eli yelled as he grabbed the computer screen. “Shit! The drop rates were bad enough! And now this?! This game is so pay to win!” Eli slammed his fist on the table before sobbing his fist.

    He started playing the game.

    [Days Later]

Eli drinks his 20th energy drink. Dozens of cans were littered across the floor. Garbage and ramen cups piled up; the room was dark, with the computer screen being the only light source.

“I have the sword… helmet… and gauntlets…” Eli yawned, and he rubbed his eyes. I’m seventeen… why am I dealing with this?

“Three days… left, I can’t do this…” Eli muttered as he rested his head on his head. He looked back at the screen, and his eyes widened. An offer for all the gears for $500?! Eli suddenly jolted back awake. He quickly takes out his phone and checks his bank account.

“Only $43…” Eli’s shoulders slumped in defeat. He peeked through the blinds; it was the night. “I haven’t slept for days…” Eli opened the door and headed to the kitchen. He walked to the living room.

Eli’s eyes widened as he spotted his brother’s card on the coffee table. Eli picked it up and flipped it. He looked at the numbers.

“I’ll pay it back…” Eli quickly bolted to his room, slamming the door. He quickly typed the card’s numbers on the computer. Eli bought the offer. He threw his hands in celebration. Eli grabbed the energy drink and downed it.

Time to sleep! Eli thought as he stood up and headed to his bed. Suddenly, his body gave out; his eyes slowly closed before hitting the floor. It was cold.

I’m… dead? Eli thought as he opened his eyes. His body floating on an empty void; he touched his face. Suddenly, his body started to get sucked in.

“Eli… Eli… Eli! ELI!” Eli felt a sharp, stinging pain behind his head. He looked back.

“You deaf or something?” Jay crossed his arms.

Is this a dream? Eli stood up before smiling. “Fuck you!” Eli exclaimed as he glared at Jay.

    “What was that?”

    “I said fuck—“

    Smash!

Eli’s face was smashed on the desk. Jay gripped Eli’s head harder. Blood trickled down Eli’s nose. “This isn’t a dream—“

    Smash!

Eli’s face was smashed on the desk again. “The hell are you talking about? You grew some balls,”

    Smash!

Jay threw Eli on the floor. Eli slowly stood up, wincing in pain. He clenched his fist and rushed at Jay. Jay quickly dodged Eli’s flimsy punch. Jay gut-punched Eli’s stomach. Spit spewed from Eli’s mouth. Eli clenched his stomach as he crouched down.

“I’ve been too lenient,” Jay grabbed a fistful of Eli’s hair. Jay lets go of Eli’s hair before smacking him across the face. He back-slapped Eli’s face. Blood splattered on Jay’s hand as he continued repeating the action.

    “Stupid”

    Smack!

    “Fucking”

    Smack!

    “Imbecile.”

    Smack!

Eli’s cheeks swelled from the hits. Blood seeps through his lips; he shivers on the floor. Eli slowly stands up; he wipes his nose with his sleeves. He clenched his fists and rushed at Jay.
