Chapter 5: Awakening in the Shadows

Chapter 5: Awakening in the Shadows

Nothing happened, only huge energy waves came from the metal. Then everything was back to normal.

It was a false alarm. Everyone gets back to their work.

The silence of the lab was suffocating, broken only by the faint hum of machinery and the occasional ‘click-clack’ of keys as scientists worked tirelessly to uncover the mysteries of the unknown metal.

Inside its core, Reacher Kent stirred. His mind was a haze, his thoughts fragmented like shards of shattered glass.

    Tap Tap Tap!

The rhythmic sound of footsteps echoed faintly through the chamber.

Kent''s consciousness flickered like a dying flame. He felt the faintest tug of awareness, an unfamiliar sensation after eons of darkness.

    Then, Cra… crack… Crack!

A piece of the unyielding metal broke away, falling to the floor with a sound.

Clank! Thig! Thog! Tung!… tug… tu.

Rolling in ground the piece Stop.

The room fell silent. Dr. Vrelan, who had been poring over data at his console, froze. His sharp, angular features twisted in confusion as he turned toward the sound.

    “What was that?”

One of the assistants hesitated, his voice shaking. “A fragment… it just broke off on its own.”

The shard shimmered faintly, its surface brimming with a subtle, pulsing energy that rippled like liquid starlight.

Inside the remaining mass of metal, Kent could feel the shift. A crack had formed, and with it came a flood of sensations. He could sense the faint vibrations of movement, hear the distant murmur of voices, and feel the electric hum of cosmic energy coursing through his prison.

“What… is this?” Kent thought, his mind struggling to comprehend his situation.

His memories were fragmented, pieces of a life that felt impossibly distant. The last thing he could recall was a blinding light—a light that consumed everything. Then darkness. Endless, crushing darkness.

Now, faint voices reached his ears.

"Elon Musk is pushing too hard. We don’t even understand this material yet."

“We don’t need to understand it. We just need results.”

Kent strained to hear more, but the voices were muffled. He tried to speak, to cry out, but his lips refused to move. His body was trapped, immobile within the crystalline prison.

“Am I… dead?” The thought chilled him, but he dismissed it. No, he could feel. He could think.

The faint hum of machinery was a constant companion. He began piecing together the fragments of conversation he overheard. It was clear he was being studied.

“Am I in a lab? A spaceship?” Kent wondered. The idea of being trapped in some experimental vessel gnawed at him.

    ---

    The Lab’s Obsession

Dr. Vrelan and his team spent days analyzing the fragment. Despite its small size, the shard was saturated with cosmic energy—an energy that defied their understanding of physics.

“I’ve never seen anything like it,” Vrelan muttered as he examined it under a scanning array. The metal shimmered beneath the beam, its glow intensifying.

“Careful, Doctor,” warned one of the assistants.

Vrelan scoffed. “It’s not alive. It’s—”

The fragment pulsed suddenly, emitting a soft whum. Vrelan jumped back, his heart pounding. The energy readings spiked.

“Musk needs to see this,” he said, his voice trembling.

    ---

    Kent’s Isolation

A week passed. Kent remained in silence, unable to move or communicate. He tried again and again to force his limbs to respond, but the metal held him fast.

The voices became less frequent. The lab was bustling with activity, yet no one came to the chamber where he was entombed. The shard they had collected had become their obsession, leaving Kent to languish in isolation.

“This can’t be real,” he thought, despair creeping into his mind. “Why isn’t anyone coming? Don’t they know I’m here?”

His senses expanded over time, as though the metal itself was granting him awareness. He could feel the faint ripples of energy coursing through the lab, hear snippets of conversation. But he couldn’t see, couldn’t interact.

“I’m nothing more than an experiment to them,” Kent realized bitterly.

    Tenna’s Trouble

Meanwhile, aboard the Last Chance, tensions were high. Tenna Voss sat at the edge of a worn barstool in one of Sol Magna’s seediest outposts. The dim lights cast a hazy glow over her lithe figure, accentuating her long legs, crossed casually as she nursed a drink. Her boots, scuffed from years of wear, rested against the footrest.

Her emerald eyes scanned the room, sharp and calculating, a stark contrast to her soft, cherry-red lips, which pressed into a thoughtful pout. Her hair, a cascade of dark waves, framed her pale face, giving her the air of a woman who had seen too much yet refused to be broken.

“You’ve been sitting here all night,” a gruff voice interrupted her thoughts.

Tenna looked up to see Darrick, one of the local scavengers. His gaze lingered a little too long on her figure, and she resisted the urge to roll her eyes.

“Got a problem with that?” she asked, her tone cold.

Before Darrick could reply, the bar erupted into chaos.

Thud, crash! A chair flew across the room, shattering against the wall. Two drunken scavengers had squared off, fists flying. Tenna sighed, sliding off the stool.

“Guess it’s time to go,” she muttered.

    The Mission

Back at the Forge, Elon Musk summoned the crew of the Last Chance. His crystalline form shimmered faintly as he addressed them.

“We need every trace of the material you found,” Musk said, his voice a measured monotone. “The area where you retrieved it might hold more fragments, and we cannot afford to miss anything.”

Arkis frowned. “You’re sending us bac

k into the asteroid field? That place is crawling with scavengers.”

Musk’s gaze turned cold. “Then don’t fail.”
