Chapter 8

Aside from Rosa, Evelyn used to be the only one who could get close to Charles.

"Mr. Charles, Ms. Evelyn fainted due to being overly distraught and not resting well. She just needs a few days of good rest, and she''ll be fine."

When he heard about her distress, Charles'' gaze deepened significantly. She was stubborn to the core.

"Mr. Charles, do you need someone from the family estate toe over and take care of her?" Dr. Nelson asked.

In the past, Charles doted on Evelyn. He would personally take care of her whenever she was ill. But recently, Charles'' detest for Evelyn becamemon knowledge.

"Tjhere''s no need for that," Charles said in a calm voice. He gave Dr. Nelson a look, signaling him to leave.

    ...

Evelyn slept restlessly, trapped in a nightmare.

In her dream, she returned to the day Charlie died. Charlie''s condition worsened due to a high fever, and she required immediate surgery. However, the doctor told her that the kidney donor had suddenly backed out, making the surgery impossible. Evelyn''s world copsed. At that moment, she thought of Charles. She kept dialing his phone, hoping he could find a donor for their daughter, but no one answered.

Charlie couldn''t wait any longer. Her little hand slipped from Evelyn''s, and she closed her eyes forever as shey in her arms. Evelyn''s heart was shattered.

Evelyn held her daughter tightly, crying her heart out, unwilling to ept this reality. She kept calling her daughter''s name, begging Charlie not to leave her. She kept rubbing her daughter''s small body, trying to keep it warm, But no matter how hard she tried, Charlie slowly lost warmth in her arms, bing stiff and cold.

    Charlie was truly gone.

    ...

Charles was woken up by Evelyn''s crying.

He had been stressed and restless these past few days at the hospital and was hardly sleeping well. Just when he had fallen asleep, he was woken up again.

He opened his eyes with a frown, annoyed, and grabbed Evelyn''s arm as shey in his embrace. "Evelyn, what are you fussing about now—"

He was about to push her away when he noticed her tear-streaked face.

Charles'' eased his grip. Evelyn was crying with profound grief as if she had lost the most important person in the world.

She mumbled something sad, but it was unclear. Her voice was very soft. It was hard to make out a word.

He could vaguely hear the words "don''t leave" and "can''t be without you."

A bit of the coldness in Charles'' eyes faded. He suppressed his anger, raised his hand, and gently patted Evelyn''s face.

He was being gentle with her. It had been too long since Charles had spoken to Evelyn properly. His tone came out somewhat harsh. "Evelyn, wake up. Stop crying."

Evelyn couldn''t hear him; she was still immersed in her sorrow. Tears fell like pearls off a string, rolling out of her eyes inrge drops.

Charles watched, his eyes slightly disdainful. Still, he leaned over from the bedside to pull over a tissue and helped her wipe away the tears and mucus on her face. "Alright, stop crying. I''m here."

His tone was still stiff, but it was clear he was trying to soothe Evelyn. She cried even harder, tears streaming non-stop.

Charles'' frown deepened, and suddenly, he pinched her chin and lowered his head to kiss her.

His intention was to stop her from crying because it was bothering him, but once the kiss began, it gradually changed in nature.

Charles hadn''t touched Evelyn in a while. He couldn''t help but deepen the kiss. The kiss gradually got out of control and became more and more intense.
