Chapter 48

Hearing about Charlie''s death, Evelyn''s pupils shrank sharply. Her eyes reddened with emotion. Her hand, clutching a kitchen knife, tightened nervously a bit more. She struggled to suppress the emotions welling up inside her, trying not to lose control. "What deal?"

"Give me a million dors, and I''ll tell you who deliberately took your daughter''s organ transnt, leading her to die on the operating table."

    "Alright." Evelyn agreed without hesitation..

Then, unable to wait, she asked, "Who is it?"

"Ms. Evelyn, you''re trying to get something for nothing here!"

The man scoffed, pulling out a bank card and handing it to Evelyn. "Once the million is in the ount, I''ll tell you immediately."

Evelyn bit her lip. "I don''t have a million dors right now, but if you tell me who it is, I promise I''ll get the money to you."

"Who believes in promises these days." John sneered and turned to leave.

Evelyn grabbed him. "Give me some time. I''ll get it for you."

"You have two days. I won''t wait any longer!"

John took Evelyn''s phone and left.

    ...

Two days flew by in an instant.

Evelyn tried everything, but a million dors was an astronomical figure for her current situation. When all else failed, she remembered what Brooks had told her that night to call him anytime if she needed help.

Hesitating for a moment, Evelyn still scrolled through her message history to dial Brooks'' number.

After a long wait, the call

automatically ended - Brooks didn''t answer. Evelyn wasn''t sure if he hadn''t heard her call or simply didn''t want to answer. She gripped her phone tightly, waiting a while donger for Brooks to call back.

When Evelyn couldn''t wait any longer, she braved the rain and headed for Robinson Group, where she found out that Brooks was attending a banquet at the Hillwood Grand Hotel today. Evelyn went home, dug out an old evening gown, changed, and then hurried out, taking a taxi to the Hillwood Grand Hotel.

The rain grew heavier. Evelyn, holding an umbre in one hand and lifting her dress with the other, walked inside but was stopped at the entrance. "Miss, please show your invitation."

"Please, can you make an exception and let me in? I just need to talk to someone for a moment, and then I''ll leave right away." Evelyn pleaded softly with the man, paying no heed to the nces around her.

"I''m sorry, miss, but I really can''t let you in without an invitation."

Evelyn knew he wasn''t being difficult on purpose. It was his job.

She was about to try convincing him further. Suddenly, the waiter greeted someone respectfully behind her. "Mr. Jenkins."

Evelyn instinctively turned around, only to see Dahlia wearing a brand-new haute couture dress, arriving in the rain with Charles. Aiden was half a step behind, holding an umbre for them. Charles saw Evelyn and frowned. "What are you doing here?"

Realizing that Charles knew Evelyn, the waiter immediately became anxious and said to Charles, "Mr. Jenkins, I apologize. I didn''t know thisdy was your friend. I''ll let her in right away." "No." Charles interrupted in a deep voice, and as he walked in, he coldly left instructions, "I don''t want to see her inside."
