Charles had just logged into the cloud storage for the surveince footage. Those cameras had been set up since the day they moved in, and the recordings had been sitting there for five years. As he thought about all the moments he''d missed in Charlie''s life, an overwhelming urge to watch the footage hit him. But just as he was about to hit y, his phone buzzed.
It was Tony on the line. "Mr. Charles, your grandma has fainted."
The news hit Charles like a ton of bricks, and all thoughts of the footage vanished. He bolted out the door without a second thought.
At the hospital, Charles found Patrick, Carmen, and the rest of the Jenkins n already gathered outside the emergency room. Evelyn was there, too. Even from a distance, Charles could catch Patrick''s sharp words aimed at Evelyn, "What right do you have to be here?"
Evelyn knew Patrick was angry. She hadn''t yed along with his n yesterday to make her rtionship with Charles public, which had mortified both Charles and the Jenkins family. Patrick had never been fond of her, and after yesterday, his disdain had only grown.
But Evelyn brushed off Patrick''s words. She didn''t argue back or even acknowledge him, focusing instead on the emergency room doors with worry etched on her face. The only person she cared about in the Jenkins family was Rosa. Her concern for Rosa was the only reason she was there.
Her indifference only fueled Patrick''s anger. "This isn''t your ce. Get out now!"
Evelyn stood her ground. "This is a public ce and not Jenkins property. You can''t make me leave." Her determination to stay, driven by her concern for Rosa, meant she wouldn''t budge while Rosa was still in danger.
Patrick was livid. The Jenkins family was a big deal in the Capital, and people usually treated him with respect. Yet here was Evelyn, the daughter of a servant, standing up to him.
"Let''s see about that!" Patrick signaled to his bodyguards. They stepped forward without hesitation Though eager to help Evelyn, Tony knew he couldn''t go against Patrick''s orders. He nced at Evelyn, urged her to step away, and promised to update her about Rosa.
But things escted quickly. A bodyguard roughly grabbed Evelyn''s arms, and another was about to strike her when a stern voice cut through the tension. "I dare anyone to touch her!" en
Charles had arrived just in time. The bodyguard froze, and Charles swiftly kicked him into the wall. The other bodyguard released Evelyn and found himself knocked back by Charles as well.
Patrick''s face was a mask of frustration, but he knew better than to cross Charles. Charles ignored Patrick, focusing on Evelyn. He held her wrist gently. "Are you okay?"
Evelyn, however, pulled away, her expression cold. She moved to a spot away from the Jenkins family. Her eyes were still fixed on the emergency room door.
Charles felt a pang of frustration but didn''t push it. He called Tony over to get the lowdown on the situation, then stood beside Evelyn, waiting.
Soon enough, the emergency room doors swung open. Evelyn moved forward, and despite Patrick''s displeasure, Charles stood by her side.
Dr. Nelson emerged with the other doctors, and with a reassuring smile, he addressed them, "Mr. Charles, Ms. Evelyn, don''t worry. Rosa''s going to be fine."
