《Unfortunately This Happened.》
Chapter 1: Intro
A die or dice if there''s more then one, but I have just one rotating in front of me.
This happened all of a sudden when I prayed for a better life. The die is in the form of a pink diamond glistening from celestial lights shining in the background.
I reach out to touch it, my body feels weightless, as if I am without substance, just existing spiritually. Even though, I still touch the die, then it shines in a powerful light, then a rabbit girl with short pink hair and red eyes takes place where the die was.
In one of those magic show outfits she looks at me with pity. She reaches out to touch my cheek, then says something, but no sound reaches my ears. I just hear a loud wind, but I read her lips, she said that Lady Luck is watching over me.
A bright lights blinds me as I feel my surroundings drift away. My existence fades away from the life I was living. My prayer answered, forgive me everyone for being weak! My family, my friends, you all are a bunch of assholes and one uppers always acting as you are my betters! Farewell, and good riddance!
*****
Lady Luck has granted you passage into a different world from your own.
She has received permission to let you awaken in Ren Marler''s body, his soul was eaten by the monster living under his bed.
"Whoa! Wait, what? Wake up where a monster is? How is that lucky!?!"
The monster is full due to eating Ren Marler''s soul, and won''t be hungry again until a month has passed. Tell a person nearby about the monster, then they will help you.
Lady Luck has granted you a skill of "Roll Die for Death" to help you adjust to your new life, please enjoy the life you prayed for!
The moment the message boxes that appeared in front of my eyes disappeared, I felt my existence being poured into Ren Marler''s body. A heavy feeling of sleep still keeping my body sluggish as I jerk away from the bed I was laying on.
I see two red eyes glistening in the dark looking surprised to see me moving away from it. I force Ren''s body out the door of the tiny room and yell, "Monster! Help, someone, help me from the monster!"
There is shifting noises behind me as the monsters slowly claws it''s puddle-like body towards me. Seriously, it looks like a slime with bloodshot eyeballs staring at me.
Someone rushes to my side and yells for me to stand back. The person uses a staff to slam into the slime-like monster causing it to explode from the force. Strong, how did Ren get eaten by that?
The person, who turns out to be a tall, long blonde haired, thin woman, asks worriedly if I am okay.
I finally take a moment to observe my body, I am in a friggen kids body. The poor guy, no wonder he got eaten. I feel a stinging sensation in my stomach.
"So hungry"
"Ren there''s not enough food, we are all eating as little as possible all the time, wait until breakfast to eat. It''s going to be oatmeal and milk!"
How is this a better life then what I already had?
These people care about Ren Marler, trust me, this is what you prayed for. Did you forget you were granted a skill? I can show you its details. Just say in your mind the skill name, and inquire about its details.

I overheard my saviour reporting the incident last night. I learned her name is Petra from her talking to the other caretakers of the orphanage. Also, I am now an orphan.
Inside the Orphanage, breakfast is being made by my saviour Petra, and several older orphans.
After sleeping beside Petra for about two hours with my stomach growling endlessly, it became time for breakfast.
Petra grumbled as she left the bed, sighed as she told me in a hushed voice, "Time to get breakfast ready!"
Even though she complained, she did it with a smile. Although concern can clearly be seen in her eyes. She''s already my favourite person compared to my old family and friends.
If my old family and friends were here instead, they woulda called me "Chipped Stone" useless and incompetent, even though I do things super professionally, such as all the chores for my family and my friends, just so I wouldn''t be lonely. Yeah, I am pathetic, but so is the people who abuse me. Sucks being socially awkward.
You do realize you are part of the problem for not standing up for yourself? Have more confidence in yourself Ren! You have a new amazing life as a Soldier of Fortune!
Thanks divine message box, as a "Soldier of Fortune", does that mean I am a mercenary now? I''ll save those thoughts for later, right now, I am starving!
*****
After eating, Petra gets me to wash dishes with her. She asks, if the slime left any damages to my soul. Also, do I feel different, am I really still Ren.
I tell her not to worry, as far as I know, I am Ren Marler, little starving orphan boy.
+1 Intelligence for persuading Petra that you are Ren!
+1 Luck for making Lady Luck happy that you accepted your life as Ren Marler

Then will become the Soldier of Misfortune.
Okay, that helps. Thank you divine message box! Now tell me all the skills I can get from my job! Also, how do I increase my level and skill level?

You are ignoring the people around you by asking me so much! Ask others to gain better details! Such as, increasing skill level!
Thank you once more! I will figure things out, then become the luckiest person alive, "Ah, hahaha!"
"Ren, I think we need to go see the priest, the slime might''ve damaged your soul, you are laughing with a crazy look in your eyes while staring at the other orphans."
"I was not laughing at them, I was laughing at myself, please don''t misunderstand."
"I stand corrected, we are going right now! Clyde, Jean, handle the rest okay? I''m taking Ren to get looked at!"
"Okay Petra, me and Clyde will get Ren''s share for lunch since he''s skimping out!"
"My food! There''s nothing wrong with me!"
Chapter 2: Quests
A church, the priests there look like they are starving as well, is a famine present?
After being led here with Petra, I noticed we live in a rather small town with dirt roads as far as the I can see.
The priest in front of me greets me with a curious look as he then chats with Petra asking what''s wrong with me, then calls for a young priestess to test my soul.
A girl with red hair and a well developed body covered up by her robe, you can tell from the telltale lumps. Impressive, is she eating a lot, and can she share with me?
I am asked to look intensely into her eyes, then she sees something on my cheek, touches it, then widens her eyes.
"There is no curse or damage, but there is a blessing."
"How did a soul slime not curse or damage Ren?"
"There is a blessing of Luck marked on his cheek. Are you really Ren? Or did you replace him through divine interference?"
The priestess is smart, way too smart. She guessed correctly. I don''t know what to do. Petra and the priestess is looking at me threateningly.
You should use your skill to try and solve this, you might die. Remember how Petra crushed that slime?
Are you watching everything I am doing? Anyway I''ll roll the Die, since I might die.
The skill "Roll Die for Death" has been activated! Toss the Die at your toes for effect!
I toss it, as Petra and the priestess are frozen in time. I realize a weightlessness once more as my soul tosses the pink diamond Die at my feet. A "6" appears, then a blinding pink light replaces the Die with Lady Luck!
"Oh, hello, I am Izzy Bell of Luck, Ren here has been damaged, but I fixed him. That''s why he is kinda strange now!"
"Oh my, Izzy, thank you for blessing Ren! So, he actually did get hurt then?"
"Petra, I keep telling you I don''t feel hurt anywhere, except for my stomach."
Lady Luck Izzy smiles at me as she continues to handle the priestess and Petra. Then Izzy winks at me as before she fades away in a bright pink glimmer. Thanks for showing up on a 0.2% chance!
I feel like this is a shady salesman showing up to address that the truly faulty product is fine, then disappears.
*****
Afterwards, Priestess Mia and my Caretaker Petra congratulated me on my blessing. Then they encouraged me to test my luck at the tavern doing quests.Enjoying this book? Seek out the original to ensure the author gets credit.
*****
Now heading to the local tavern, "Laughing Raven" looking for quests to help increase my level. This is the only place that processes the quests.
The Laughing Raven has been around since the last tavern burned down in a bar fight three months ago. I am told by Petra to talk to the owners daughters or son for quests. My legs shake in expectation. I may be able to get more food this way!
The moment I entered the tavern, I am spotted by a barmaid. Then immediately kicked out of the tavern. The barmaid is one of the daughters of the taverns owner.
"This is no place for little boys! Unless you''re here to drop off a quest for us to handle."
Her hands on her hips as she twitches her eye at me with a raised eyebrow. The most eye catching thing on her is her full red frowning lips. I take a deep breath and tell her I am here to do a quest, not drop one off.
You should use your skill again. Sigh, this is the last time I help you since you are still getting use to using skills. I will continue to update your status, you''ll notice things will change as more options become available! Good Luck!
Thank you Divine Message Box, I will keep that in mind that I have skills I can abuse! I mean use!
The skill "Roll Die for Death" has been activated! Toss the Die at your toes for effect!
The frozen time happens once more as my spirit tosses the pink diamond Die at my feet. A "2" appears, The other daughter comes out, smiling as she meets my eyes and blushes a little.
"He can do some of the non-dangerous stuff we got piled up. Like, delivering meals to all the labourers regularly at lunch and supper for a week.
Clearing out the muck from the public toiletries every three days for a month.
Finally, taking part of the new rookie program to patrol the town boundaries clearing out goblins, large rats, and slimes that keep getting attracted in large groups."
The angry red lip girl just huffs, then walks away as she tells her sister to handle the orphan boy then.
The cute blushing black haired barmaid tells me all the examples that she given would be best suited for me to do. She recommends me to do them all, as her captivating smile causes me to dumbly nod at her.
She tells me to wait outside as she prepares my quest papers to sign. She comes out with a piece of charcoal for me to sign with my finger print, then tells me to wait for her again so she could introduce me to my quests.
*****
The owner''s son was sent out instead of the blushing black haired girl, to introduce me to my quests. I frown at the boy frowning back at me. He shows me to the public toiletries first with a malicious smile, telling me I gotta scoop everything out, and bring it to a farmstead half an hours walk from here to process the mess into fertilizer. I grimaced at the thought, and nauseatingly nod at the boy.
Then he leads me to the farmstead that processes the fertilizer, and tells me that this is the place to pick up the meals for the labourers and to bring them to every single farmstead and workshop around town. They keep count of what is being sent, so if I steal a meal, I pay it back by becoming a criminal slave for the farmers. I tell him I agree to this quest as well.
Finally, he leads me to the Guard Barracks Training Grounds. A laid back Guard says in a weeks time, he is taking every rookie out to get some experience.
A new training program for free labour, so the guards can slack off apparently. I tell him to sign me up as well. He shrugs at me and says to come back with a weapon if I want to join. I need a weapon within a week.
After leaving the training grounds, the boy sprints back towards the tavern as he yells back at me to be ready to clean out the muck today, wash up, then deliver the food. He giggles as he runs away.
The skill "Roll Die for Death" has been activated! Toss the Die at your toes for effect!
A little "1" appears, a couple of small birds flying nearby does a stealth bombardment on the boy running away from me. That was worth it.
I walk happily towards to the toiletries knowing at least I''m not the only one dealing with crap.
Chapter 3: Slice of Life
The Orphanage, an orphan is getting adopted. Clyde, one of the older orphans, is getting adopted by an old couple that can''t make anymore children. The reason? They are getting too old to do chores and need help.
I say good riddance, him and Jean eat my oatmeal whenever I wake up for the past few days. As a result, it has force me to steal a spoonful of oatmeal from the other orphans.
How many of us is there? Twenty, and four caretakers. Well, it''s going to be nineteen orphans now.
Why is this an issue? He was going to lend me his dagger to go out on patrol with. Why was he going to lend it? Because I didn''t tell on him, as well as Jean for taking my food.
What am I going to do now?
The skill "Roll Die for Death" has been activated! Toss the Die at your toes for effect!
The frozen time happens once more as my spirit tosses the pink diamond Die at my feet. A "3" appears.
"Roll Die for Death" lvl.1
Roll a spirit Die granted to you by Lady Luck.
(1)A small force of nature might help you.
(2)A person feels compelled to help you.
(3)Your enemy changes priorities.
(4)Any action you take is enhance by "Luck" causing a favourable outcome.
(5)An attack with any weapons causes unconsciousness to your enemy
(6)Lady Luck appears and helps you out! Amazing!
The moment time started moving again from everything being frozen still, the old couple spotted me and decided they wanted somebody younger instead. The funny thing is, I don''t want to be adopted, I like Petra.
On the other hand, what if another monster slime breaks in again? That would literally kill my very existence.
On the other hand, this couple looking to adopt an orphan, should know a lot of ways to survive, because, they are old.
I remember someone telling me once, that our elders life lessons, lessens the danger with their stories.
"My name is Ren Marler, it''s a pleasure to meet you, is there any chance you can adopt both of us? I am actually close to Clyde.", I hug Clyde''s arm, secretly pinching his side. I whispered to him, that he owes me still.
"Yea, please take both us together, we are practically inseparable, Uh huh.", says Clyde sheepishly.Unauthorized usage: this tale is on Amazon without the author''s consent. Report any sightings.
The old man puts up his hand to tell us to wait as he pulls his wife away to discuss.
*****
Remembering my quests as time passes, they are still in progress. The patrol is tomorrow. I got the town memorized now, the layout is like a big rectangle with a huge square at the end, the square is all the farmers fields.
The rectangle is the mix of every facility, including the orphanage, we live on the outskirts of the rectangle, that''s the reason why monsters sometimes sneak in.
I can''t wait to collect the experience and level up. These quests are too demanding, luckily, I got the toiletries quest shortened down to a week by doing it each day, instead of every three. At least they would be all finished when I do my patrol.
*****
The couple returned, they''ve come to an agreement of taking us both. Petra smiles sadly at this.
"I am happy, I am not s-sad. You are getting taken away from me. I mean you are given a chance at making something out of yourself. You''ll still be around town anyway, don''t forget to comeback and s-say hi s-sometimes.", tears start gushing out as she tells me.
"I really like you, maybe we can do a quest together sometime in the future? I''ll never forget how you saved me.", I remember, I was pathetically calling out for help in a sluggish manner. Scared outta my mind from that slime monster with bloodshot eyes.
I hug Petra goodbye, then she says something similar to Clyde while crying as well. She really cares about us huh? My chest feels tight for some reason. The happy life I prayed for, is this really okay?
*****
The elderly couples name is Abe and Edna Prickly. They own a tailor shop, where they don''t make clothes, but fix old clothes.
I let the old couple know I am currently on a bunch of quests that are almost done. I asked them for a weapon that''s better than a dagger. I got shot down, a big nope. So I whisper to Clyde, "Gonna need your dagger for the patrol."
*****
All the rookies are here with me at the meeting at the Guard Barracks. Sir Laid-back Guard is checking us over, then gave us some rations to take on the patrol with. He advises the way to kill the variety monsters, and to look out for the people around you when attacking or throwing weapons.
He holds no responsibility if we die to these easy to kill monsters, and are free to leave the rookie program.
One person backed out, I didn''t even realize it''s the daughter of the Laughing Raven tavern, angry red lips. She looked scared, that is, until she noticed me with a just dagger strapped to my side for protection.
Angry red lips has a small buckler shield and a short sword. So, after seeing me with a small dagger only as my weapon, she walked towards me.
"You''re here too? Just a dagger, seriously? You know you could die, right?"
"I know, but we were just taught how to kill monsters easily, as long as no high grade monster appears, we''re fine."
Sir Laid-back Guard says, "Little lady, are you coming or going? You could die, you know that right?"
He obviously overheard our conversation, I agree with the guard, she should go back. She might make her family sad if she got hurt.
"No, I am coming, this guy is obviously gonna get himself killed out there. He needs someone to watch his back.", angry red lips replies.
"What''s your name anyway? Mine is Ren.", I forgot, I am socially awkward.
The guard and angry red lips responds at the same time.
"Alex, short for Alexander."
"Alex, short for Alexa."
Just be called Alexa! Why short it an "A"!
Chapter 4: Patrol
On the dirt road leading around the towns perimeter, 8 of us rookies and Sir Laid-back Guard Alex of Hubble. Yeah, just found that out as well.
The town''s name is Hubble, overheard Sir Guard explain we are going to the outskirts of the farmsteads to hunt large sized rats and/or goblins. Whatever pops its ugly head out first, as Sir Guard explained.
Angry red lips, Alexa, and the 6 other rookies are with me.
The armours of the others is as follows; 2 wearing leather armour, 1 wearing a metal chest plate, 2 wearing casual clothing, and finally 1 wear a robe.
Their weapons accordingly;1 bow and arrow set, 1 sword, 1 spear, 2 daggers, 1 staff.
None of them got a shield, the only one is Alexa. They all look nervous and eager. Like a person high on drugs looking to shank someone.
We''re approaching some goblins, time to start up some skill usage! A group of 5 goblins is snarling and creeping towards us, Sir Guard Alex doesn''t seem worried. We got this.
The skill "Roll Die for Death" has been activated! Toss the Die at your toes for effect!
I toss it as we approach the goblins spreading out towards us. I roll a "4" (Luck enhancement to actions), okay let''s just jump at them.
I leap towards the closest goblin, and stabbed it right in the eye with a wet thunk, the goblin keels over. The dagger is kinda stuck, I yank hard, whipping it out of my grip to the goblin behind me attacking Alexa. A gurgle escapes the victim goblin as the dagger is thrown into its neck.
I really want to admit I got skills, but that was just some dumb luck. The other goblins properly fought well against the other rookies. One guy with a dagger got his arm gashed badly from a rusty kitchen knife.
The other 3 goblins died quickly, after having one guy block attacks, and another deal the final blow on the flanks. Alexa glared at me, "You stole my kill!"
"Didn''t mean to, my dagger got stuck, yanked it out, then it got stuck again in your goblin.", I shrug at her while rolling my eyes. Why be nice to her, she didn''t treat my nice when we first met.
"Stay away from me orphan boy.", she''s cruel.
"Not an orphan anymore, got adopted because I looked like a good orphan to adopt. Also, weren''t you going to leave the patrol, but then you noticed me?"Love this novel? Read it on Royal Road to ensure the author gets credit.
"W-what! You got adopted? C-congrats, I guess. I almost didn''t come because I don''t like killing monsters. I-it''s not because I noticed you!"
Okay, I think she''s into me, maybe. Should I keep teasing her anyway? I can''t believe I am not being awkward!
"Stop staring at me you pervert!"
Nevermind, I needed to keep talking if I wanted to continue looking at her astonished face.
I don''t think you''ll be able to recover on that one, learn to stare at her equipment and talk about it!
Oh that sounds like a good idea, thank you divine message box!
Also I forgot to mention you gained 2 levels, hopefully your not mad at me.
Seriously!?! Show me my status!
Ren Marler lvl.4
Job: Soldier of Fortune
Hp: 78

Vit: 7
Int: 6
Wis: 5
Luck: 10
Okay that''s way better than what I started out with! I can''t wait until I get access to "Skill Lottery" at level 5. I might get to finally use magic! Oh yeah, that robe guy with the staff uses water magic, useful for daily living. The guy with the bow and arrow uses fire magic, he literally burns out his arrows, and because of that he''s got no more arrows after that small fight with the goblins. He seriously missed all his shots. Maybe he could''ve reused them if they hit any goblin?
*****
Evening, by the farmsteads, we are patrolling still, the guy with the dagger that got injured, and the bow and arrow guy returned to town already, thus causing them to fail the program.
Right now we are fighting large rats that have us exhausted.Sir Guard Alex is knocked out, now sleeping heavily. The water guy is out of mana and is defending with his staff. The sword guy is too tired to attack, and is stuck parrying attacks. The remaining dagger guy is dead. The spear guy is still a killing machine. Alexa is leaping around guarding everyone with her buckler and sword, no fear in repelling the vermin. Finally, what am I doing? Guarding Sir Guard Alex''s sleeping body from the rats. How did this get so unlucky?
Well Sir Alex got knocked out when you guys opened the barn doors to a rat infested nest, it was an impressive 8 feet off the ground knock back. As for how you guys responded, and got into formation to protect each other. That''s well done. Maybe you should use your skill if your not too busy knocking back those rats away from Sir Guard Alex.
Hold on a moment, I''ll activate it as soon as I have some space created.
I strike at the vermin latched to my ankle.
There, that takes care of the one biting my ankle.
The skill "Roll Die for Death" has been activated! Toss the Die at you feet for effect!
I toss the Die and surprisingly a "5" appears(weapons cause unconsciousness), okay time to test this out. I grip my dagger tightly and dash towards the rats still advancing towards sleeping Sir Laid-back Guard Alex.
The rats stiffen up as my dagger comes into contact with them ever so lightly. I sweep my dagger all around and the rats fall unconscious.
I continue dashing in pain from a bitten ankle, all over until every last rat is put asleep, then I start stabbing each one dead.
These annoying rats, this was so damn exhausting, and painful, my foot is throbbing.
*****
The others are staring at me stabbing the sleeping rats. A look of disgust as I progress to each rat. "What did you just do them?" The spear guy asked, I guess I ruined his fun.
"I knocked them out, now I''m killing them.", the others continue to stare in a stupor. Then finally Sir Guard Alex wakes up.
Chapter 5: Skill Lottery
At a Barn in a town called Hubble, an infested rat nest, knocked out by a lucky skill, then all the rats from the nest is stabbed to death. One casualty amongst the group of 7 taking part of the Rookie Program. That one casualty, a dagger weilder.
The six of us left is Sir Guard Alex, and Alexa the daughter of the owner of the Laughing Raven tavern. The spear guy, and the water magic user. The sword guy and me the last dagger guy standing, well limping. One of the rats bit my ankle pretty badly, then I dashed around on the injured foot not knowing how long my unconsciousness buff to my weapon would last.
Sir Guard Alex was knocked out during the skirmish with the rats. Now he''s finally waking up after we finished annihilating the nest of rats.
"Hey, what the hell happened here?", said Sir Guard Alex.
"What does it look like? We killed the whole damn nest while protecting your unconscious body. Not an easy task, check your arms and cheeks, they got you bad in a few spots."
Yeah, I couldn''t protect him perfectly against a swarm.
"Ouch, no kidding eh? Thanks for keeping me safe. I guess that means you all pass, except for that guy." Sir Guard Alex points down at dead dagger guy.
"Since you guys saved my life, you all get a bonus of a celebratory meal, on me."
My stomach growls loudly at that. That''s music to my ears, food!
I don''t mean to bother you thinking about food but, you levelled up like crazy, you''ll need to activate "Skill Lottery" when you get the chance as well.
Oh, seriously, why didn''t you mention that earlier?
You were busy, you know killing rats, then talking, still talking to Sir Guard Alex.
"We''re heading back dagger guy! You coming with us?"
"My name is Ren, I learned your name, please learn mine as well. Sorry, the pain in my foot is making snap in anger."
Alexa comes up beside me, "Here, let me help you walk, lean onto me.", I take Alexa''s arm.
"Thanks, that helps a lot. You''re not too bad, aren''t ya?"This tale has been unlawfully lifted from Royal Road. If you spot it on Amazon, please report it.
"Is that suppose to be a compliment? Anyway, how did you knock out those rats?"
"I got Lady Luck on my side, that''s how. She grants me a strange power, I am still unsure how to use properly."
"Oh, which Lady Luck is helping you?"
"There''s more then one?"
"Yeah, there''s Trinity, Izzy, Maple, and Lou. Four of them, and they work in different areas of Luck. The other statuses has their own Guardians as well."
Well that''s interesting, which area does Izzy work with, and which areas are there? Anyway, bigger priority is.
The skill "Skill Lottery" has been activated! For effect draw a card from this deck of cards!
Frozen time, as I feel my spirit bend out of my body to touch the cards, I feel a strong vibration humming as the cards automatically shuffles itself in mid air. I close my eyes and reach out in the swirling cards in front of me, and pull one out.
Congrats! You received the skill "Iron Fist"
Iron Fist lvl.1
Makes fist strong enough to repel blades and spikes. If impact is way too strong, it will puncture through. This skill is meant to parry weapons when unarmed. Does not make strikes stronger then what you can strike with. Mp:1/sec active
"Not bad, still wish for magic though. Oh yeah, I am Izzy''s Soldier of Fortune."
"You got Izzy? She''s that bunny one, she takes care of bets with risky chances."
"What about the other three?"
"They are kinda weird being animalistic, but there''s the fox Lou, she takes care punishments with debtors. There''s the dog Maple, she takes care of rewards for the high rollers. Finally, there''s the cat Trinity, she takes care of cheaters, and likes to cheat herself."
"Good to know, thanks for telling me. Oh we''re here, I''m starving since that fight!"
"Let''s eat to our hearts content!", Alexa says smugly with a gleam in here eye. She eats free here, since she''s the owners daughter. Her phrase is a trap, since we still gotta pay. Well, Sir Guard Alex, since he offered. Not a trap then?
The other rookies were already inside the Laughing Raven eating and drinking. Sir Guard Alex, sighs as he waves us over. He knows he''s losing out on a large portion of money, but he''s still alive.
Alexa''s dad comes out to greet us and asks if she''s hurt anywhere. She is, but she tells him no. Her legs and shoulders are gashed up under her cloak.
Then Clyde, my orphan buddy who got adopted with me says I gotta head back to the tailorshop to close things up and to get some sleep.
My food! I didn''t even eat yet! I argue, but he tells me I''m going to get thrown out if I don''t listen, and to give him back his dagger I borrowed off of him. Some things just isn''t fair!
I lean onto Clyde and head back home to the tailorshop. Alexa''s sister tells me goodbye, while Alexa already disappeared, probably to treat her wounds. I need to learn Alexa''s sisters name when I get the chance.
I think I''ll go see priestess Mia tomorrow, and get my foot healed at the church.
*****
The old couple, Abe and Edna Prickly, my new parents of the tailorshop, started making a ruckus in the early morning. Waking up Clyde and I, to take the finished repaired clothing they worked on the other day to the original owners.
I complain about my injured foot, they tell me they''ll throw me out if I don''t help Clyde deliver. I whisper to Clyde to let me sneak over to church. I make sure to remind him he owes me since he screwed me out of my celebratory meal last night. He tells me I can go back to the Orphanage. What do I do?
Chapter 6: Quest Complete!
What do I do? I got an injured foot to walk around on that I want healed. But, my parents who adopted me, Abe and Edna Prickly, want me to run errands for them. If I take off, I''ll be disowned.
The skill "Roll Die for Death" has been activated! Toss the Die at your toes for effect!
I toss the Die and got "1"(Force of nature may help). A vase from the market close by crashes and spooks a horse galloping towards me. The horse knocks me down causing the mended clothes I''m suppose to deliver, to get caught by the horses bridle.
The clothes are now taken by a horse thief, I limp after it, then notice Petra, my caretaker from the Orphanage, catch the excited horse. She then calms it down, Clyde noticing her, takes off before she comes to meet us.
She passed me my sack of clothes from the horse thief.
"I never thought I''d see the day when a spooked horse snatched something away from a feeble poor boy.", she says with a slight smile.
"I gotta run those clothes around town on an injured foot, my new mom, and dad told me to. I wanted to go to church, but they''ll disown me."
"Seriously? Well, what do you need to do? I can help you just for a few minutes though, I am in the middle of picking up more oats for breakfast. We gotta do it quick."
"I need to check my list here, it says. It says, I gotta bring them to the Orphanage and the Church. I think I s-should''ve just read that, instead of complaining about it."
"Well, I''ll help to the Church for now. Then I''ll see you when you come back to the Orphanage."
"Thanks Petra, that helps, Clyde was here, but he got scared of you for some reason."
"Yeah, before he left, he took my dagger from my personal items. Get him to bring it back okay? I don''t know when monsters might sneak into the Orphanage again.", she tells me with a face full of worry, not even anger. This is why I like her, she cares so much.
"I don''t know if this is a bad time but ever since you did your quests, you still need to head to the Laughing Raven tavern and complete your quest contracts and take up an experience boost."
I''m going to have to do that afterwards, maybe I can still get a free meal? Didn''t even eat breakfast yet, maybe I can also get a free meal from the Orphanage? I feel so hungry.
*****
At the Church, Petra brought me here, I was hoping to see Mia, but I got the old priest man saying he can help me. "Are you sure Mia is busy? I really need to ask her something about my blessing. You know, since she''s a pro." I bluffed, not sure what to ask about the blessing, but I rather be treated by the nice looking redhead priestess.
The excited old priest looked very disappointed, but agreed to let Mia see me. Petra waved bye, and Mia appeared shortly after.
"You wanted me to heal something, and talk about the blessing? Since you''re doing quests now, you are going to need to pay. This isn''t a charity, you know."
"I didn''t even complete my quests yet, can you make an exception this one time?"
"Fine, since I''m sure you wouldn''t lie to me. Alright did you eat before coming here?"
"What do you mean by that? Are you making fun of me since I barely eat at all? Pick on the little starving orphan boy huh?"
"No, healing requires a fuel to burn, food in the stomach or fat on the body is highest priority for healing compensation. Also, is the Orphanage treating you poorly?"
"What kind of sick world takes food out of your mouth just to make you feel better? Sorry, I''m cranky because I didn''t know, and I''m hungry too. Also, I actually got adopted, but I''m not being fed until my errands are done."
The priestess Mia sighs, congrats me on being adopted, then explains she can''t heal me without proper heal replacement. Then she asks what I wanted to know about my blessing.
"What kind of things should I ask Lady Luck, and not ask, you know, like a taboo topic. Such as, if she has something stuck on her and you don''t want to embarrass her?"
"Trust me, with Izzy everything is okay. She''s very open minded out of the Lady Luck sisters."
"Sisters? Don''t they have different animalistic qualities to them? How are they sisters?"
"And that is a question you don''t ask."
"But you just said--"If you discover this tale on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen. Please report the violation.
"You just don''t talk about it!"
After thanking priestess Mia for her advice I limped back to the Orphanage to get some food replacement for my heal.
"Is your new parents not feeding you?", Petra asks looking worried.
"They will once I earn my keep, apparently, so can I get a bowl of oatmeal, so I can get a heal?"
"Well since you don''t live here anymore, I can''t."
"Oh...", wow, I didn''t think rejection would hurt that much, I feel tears coming.
"Just this one time okay? Don''t cry Ren! I don''t like seeing you limp around.
I''ll help you, but why is it that you are being treated this way?"
"I took the quests, I take the responsibilities, be a man.", as I was told by Abe.
"Well, you''re still my little boy to me.", ugh, she took the mom role to me. Might as well tease her for punishment.
"Thanks mom, I''d like a cuddle afterwards when I''m done with my healing and errands."
"Okay Ren, I could use a nap later on, but for only an hour."
W-what? You can take mom role then, I''m fine with that. She''s exactly what I prayed for when I wanted a better life.
*****
I run back to an annoyed old priest at the Church who calls Mia back out for me. He tried to argue that he can heal me, even offered candy to do it. Why does a thin old man that looks just as starving as me, have candy? I still refused, telling him no, means no.
Mia heals me, foot feels back to normal, I wobble around for abit, getting back to a normal walk. The food literally feels like it got sucked down to my foot. Not a pleasant feeling.
She bids me farewell, but I finally remember my errand of dropping clothes off. I say bye to Mia then call the old priest over reluctantly, and asked for him to sign a paper to say he received the pile of clothes.
He refused to sign, lecturing me on about treating others with respect, and to let them put their hands on you to heal them. I respond by saying Mia didn''t even touch me to heal! He responds back by saying it''s because she''s the best, that''s why she doesn''t need to.
"Please just sign the papers, my day has been a rough one so far."
"Alright then, but don''t refuse a persons kindness next time."
I don''t respond and head back to the Orphanage to drop of the pile of mended clothing and get a paper signed as well. No hassle this time. I get to cuddle with the tall blonde Petra as well for half an hour. I feel fully healed now.
I report back to headquarters at the tailorshop, Clyde busy stirring wet clothes in a tub, cleaning/treating them? Edna thanks me, and let''s me eat a small bread roll and some mystery meat. I thank her and told her I''m going to complete my quests at the tavern.
*****
The Laughing Raven tavern, 3 months old since it was burnt down previously. The Sir Guard Alex is snoozing on a stool still in uniform. I shake his shoulder to wake him up.
"Huh, h-huh, w-who is there? Oh Ren you finally came back! I-I was -belch- waiting for you all this time. Let''s complete the quest e-eh?" , he smells like depression. I don''t blame him, how can you explain getting knocked out by a swarm of rats, then getting your life saved by a bunch young rookies. That''s just embarrassing.
I put my hand on his shoulder and gaze deep into his eyes, "You gotta learn to stay awake, I caught you snoozing again, luckily there isn''t rats here to attack you."
"Don''t remind me, and I think that smart attitude just costed you y-your free meal. I hope it was worth it f-for making fun of me too."
Well, damn, there goes that from me just making a little rude joke. I usually joke about myself like that to others, I sometimes forget I can''t make rude jokes like that if it isn''t about me.
"Sorry about that, thank you though for the Rookie Program, I am happy I took part of it. Sucks about that one guy who died."
"Don''t remind me, that also make me look bad, I am getting demoted to jailor, I''d rather stretch my legs about. I gotta be nice to prisoners or else I get demoted again ever since the new law passed."
"Isn''t being a jailor important? Also, can we complete the contract now. Even though your life story is interesting."
"No jailor sucks, paper work on each person, prepare meals, toss out their waste, and the comments you get called sometimes there."
"Quest completion?"
"Quest complete, Ren Marler passed. Bonus of 5 silver coins for being most outstanding.

Hey, don''t say that, you''ve been the most understanding and you keep bringing important moments at the right times.
Thanks Ren Marler, I''m happy I am observing you instead of that other guy.
Are you allowed to tell me that?
Hello?
"Hello, Ren, you okay. Y-you look pretty scary there.", Sir jailor Alex reminds me I''m talking to a wall.
"I''m just happy I got silver coins! I''m heading back to the tailorshop. Thanks again Alex."
"Didn''t you do other jobs Ren, I remember you telling Alexa that."
"Oh, yeah. I guess, I''ll complete those too."

I was scared you disappeared, what happened to you divine message box?
Nothing to say? Okay, I''m heading back home.
Chapter 7: Deimbe
The Tailorshop in the middle of the night. After the quests, divine message box suddenly went bland, unfeeling, mechanical, since the mentioning of others like me.
I wonder if I can get Deimbe(DMB, Divine message box) to come back by calling Lady Luck? A month cooldown, I might really need her at a different time, but I made friends with Deimbe, and want it back.
Okay, it''s decided, I''ll risk it! I want my friendly voice inside my head back!
Activating skill "777Day", please snap your fingers at the location for Lady Luck to appear at.
I snap my fingers to beside me on the bed I''m sharing with Clyde. Yeah, the old couple Abe and Edna, wanted just one orphan for a reason.
A shining pink light pours throughout the tiny bedroom, and Lady Luck in pajamas appears beside me holding a small teddy version of me in her arms.
"Hey Ren, I was wondering when you were going to summon me! I''ve been dying to get another good look at you up close." Izzy winks at me as she smiles in a sleepy manner.
"So what did you want to talk about? Hmmm?" She nudges me causing me to knock into a sleeping Clyde, but he''s a heavy sleeper, reminds me of Sir Jailor Alex.
"Can you return Deimbe back to normal? You know, Divine message box."
"I sure can, but Deimbe broke a rule, a minor one. I can make an exception if you can win against me in paper, rock, scissors!"
She is the embodiment of Luck, how can I win? I think she can read my mind as well like Deimbe. Anyway, if she really wants to return Deimbe, she''ll pick paper, if not, rock. If she just wants to mess with me, she''ll pick scissors. The answer to this, is to pick scissors!
"You ready Ren? Okay, paper, rock, scissors!", I watch her hand closely to make sure she doesn''t change her choice mid throw. She picked scissors, I picked rock. I win.
"Thats not fair, you were going to pick scissors! I wanted to mess with you before I let you win."The narrative has been taken without permission. Report any sightings.
"So you can read my mind after all? I knew you wouldn''t want me to win a short game easily, that''s why I loudly thought that plan out for you."
"Whatever! Just know if Deimbe messes up again, I''m not picking a simple game again."
+1 Luck for beating Lady Luck! Thank you for saving me!
No problem Deimbe, I was worried about you.
"Anyway, since you won, and this pretty much was just a little fun game. I''m going to shortened the cooldown for the skill by half a month. Hope to see you soon, bye Ren.", she says with her face buried in the teddy version of me, then disappears in a glimmer of pink lights.
Okay, back to normal, now to actually sleep.
*****
Morning time, finished running errands for the tailorshop. Ate breakfast, and now asking Clyde for the dagger to return it back to Petra.
"She wants it back that badly? She has that metal staff though, she should be fine without the dagger.", I remind him about the monsters that sneak into the orphanage, then reluctantly passes the dagger to me.
"Tell her I''m sorry, please?"
"No, do it yourself, you coward. I want to do more quests, hopefully with Petra."
"Ugh, fine you brat, you''re lucky the all the people around town like you for some reason."
"I did a quest of passing meals to all the labourers in town."
"Oh, damn. No wonder. After doing my chores, I dunno if I got any more energy to do even attempt any quests." Clyde collapses onto the stool he''s sitting on in a fake exhaustion.
Anyway, I got the dagger! Time to go see Petra, then see if she''s up for doing quests with me. I also really want to know the black haired cutie''s name at the Laughing Raven tavern.
*****
The Orphanage, Petra apologized and told me she''s needed at the orphanage and can''t leave to do quests with me. Unless the Orphanage hired more caretakers, older orphans graduating to adulthood, to help.
Jean, Clyde''s childhood friend, will become an adult soon in a months time. Then Petra can spend time with me on quests. I appreciate that she actually took the time to explain, "Not now, but definitely later!", this is why I love Petra.
Jean is a scruffy looking girl with black hair in a ponytail, a smug look always on her face like she''s plotting on how to steal your breakfast. Which she is always doing to the other orphans, since she is the only chubby person, in the right places, at the orphanage. Still, I can''t get to like her.
I take off to the tavern, and ask about the quests from the black haired cutie. This time I ask for her name, since she knows my name, probably by her sister. Her name is Sarah.
Sarah tells me I can do a monster hunt by stopping by each place in town and clear out any sneaky monsters. They regularly hide in the tool sheds and near food storages. So I tasked myself to patrol for a week clearing out monsters, and doing errands for the tailorshop.
All the monsters were easy to deal with until the last day of the quest. A monster talked to me. Telling me to spare it, it was a soul slime.
Chapter 8: Monster Problems
The last day of the week long quest hunting sneaky monsters around the town of Hubble. The exercise, and fighting experience gave me some rewarding stat boosts to my strength and vitality. I noticed that speed and dexterity isn''t a stat.
I asked Deimbe about it and told me it''s because they are a formula stat. This also includes stamina. I rather not get into it, until it''s an important matter. I like the simple stat system for now.
I''ve received an additional 10 strength and 16 vitality by running from place to place and eliminating all monsters as quickly as possible. Deimbe told me this was the best way to boost up and get my stats to a respectable level, for my level.
This last day, a soul slime I am being cautious around suddenly speaks to me.
"S-stop, p-please don''t kill me! This damn monster stole me from my body!"
"What do you mean by that? Where''s your original body then? Which family are you with?", there is three main families in this town, the Hubble''s, the Blume''s, and the Stain''s.
The Prickly''s that adopted is one of the refugee families that moved here from a pillaged village, I laughed at the rhyme, then got smacked over the head by Abe as Edna cried. I apologized for being rude, I hate being socially awkward at tragic moments.
"I''am not with any of them, Ren, I am one of the other orphans. It''s me Clyde!", W-wait, other orphan? Clyde? So before we got adopted, Clyde was replaced?
"When did you get taken out of your body?"
"Its been a horrible month.", I got put into this body because of a soul slime as well. Did Petra kill the original Ren Marler? Its been two weeks since I''ve been transferred. So he doesn''t know that the real Ren is gone too.
"Is there a way for you to get back into your body?"
Ren stop! Remember when I said not to worry for a month when a soul slime eats a soul? It assimilates the persons remains into its hunting techniques. That slime is using its Clyde fuel to attempt at sucking your soul, or another persons. It''s important to kill soul slimes quickly or else traumatizing things like this might happen. You let your guard down, then poof goes your existence. These guys are super dangerous, but easy to kill.
"There is a way, just sneak me to the underside of the bed Clyde will sleep and I''ll do the rest.", yeah, that sounds like eating, not going back into a body. I guess you are right Deimbe.
"Okay hold on for a second I''ll look for something to hide you in.", as soon as the slime relaxes its guard I find a large size rock, then charged at it tossing the small boulder at it, crushing it to smithereens.
I honestly hope I did the right thing and didn''t kill the original Clyde that could''ve been saved. This brings up another pressing matter. Clyde is a replacement like me. Deimbe, probably meant the other being Clyde. This content has been misappropriated from Royal Road; report any instances of this story if found elsewhere.
The safe thing to do, is just ignore it for now. Is he another follower of Luck, or maybe another stat?
*****
Feeling conflicted, I head back to the Laughing Raven tavern to forget about my new problem. I get more experience boosting from the quest, and most importantly, money to buy new equipment. As well as food, I hate starving. The blush black haired cutie Sarah and angry red lips Alexa both happily greet me as little hero as I finish my quest.
"Hey Ren, everybody is commenting on how fast you run from shed to shed, storage to storage. Eliminating every little sneaky monster everyday this past week. The kids around town are actually safe to spend time outside thanks to your efforts!" Sarah praises me, please don''t stop.
"I''m surprised you never ended up seriously hurt this past week, I tried following you several times but couldn''t keep up with you. It''s like your ignoring me!", its because I am, I rather not have around to insult me repeatedly. I really prefer Sarah over her.
"Thanks for your concern Alexa, also thank you Sarah for letting me know I am making an impact around town.", it''s suppose to be the town guards that protect everyone, but they are really busy playing important roles of crime watching. Evil human beings seems to be a higher priority over the sneaky monsters around the town.
The owner thanks me as well as I complete the quest.
"Thank you Ren Marler for making the town of Hubble a safer place, you receive a bonus of 1 gold coin for an outstanding job by quickly eliminating and patrolling all around the town."

Ren, for the past week, you have been forgetting to use your skills, your so focused on your stat boosts I didn''t want to remind you. But, you should train on them with Alexa there, she would make a great sparring partner for you. I really want to see you do more "Skill Lottery", remember you might get something amazing like magic!
Oh crap, thanks for reminding me Deimbe, see those stat boost messages got me addicted to training this past week on my stats.
"H-hey Alexa, would you play with me? You know like a sparring match, I''ve been getting good at battling monsters, but I need training against fellow humans."
"Well, since you''ll obviously get killed one day if you don''t practice for humans. I''ll help you out for a fee."
She''s targeting my gold coin I just got from doing my quest! My equipment! My food! Desperate times call for desperate measures!
The skill "Roll Die for Death" has been activated! Toss the Die at your toes for effect!
The world, frozen in time once more, to let me use my skill. I toss the Die and a "3" appears(enemy changes target priorities), score, exactly what I was hoping for. Times starts once more.
"The fee for sparring would be, um, be uhhh, be my escort to the Halo City that surrounds Dungeon Valley. The monsters to fight there is the best place for battle experience. Even though, I hate it. I hate fighting monsters, the tavern really needs money or else its going to close and be sold off. I was thinking of asking you for that gold coin back, but I can get more then just a gold coin if we head to Halo City. If its you- if its you, I think I can do it."
"Whoa, whoa, whoa. I still gotta help out with the tailorshop."
"Abe would understand, don''t worry, my dad could convince him to let you escort me, even though we would join a merchant escort quest to get there. One is leaving in two days.", I have been wondering what other places in this world might look like, this is the best chance. But, I''ll be leaving the lovely Petra and the Priestess Mia behind taking an adventure into the unknown.
This isn''t what I prayed for, but I can''t help wanting to go. I think I''m too addicted to stat boosts to refuse now.
On the scary side, what if I encounter something that could kill me in one blow? I''ll need to stick close to the experts, maybe another supervised training program is available in Halo City? Okay that''s the right idea, I''ll do it!
"Okay, I''ll come back in two days."
Chapter 9 Escorting
After two days have passed, I head to the Laughing Raven, Sarah notices me wondering at the entrance looking for Alexa. She calls out to me.
"Hey Ren! Alexa has already signed you and her up to join the caravan heading to Halo City. That place is very dangerous with a bunch of random power leveled monsters lurking around Dungeon Valley. There is five separated Dungeon masters that continuously fight each other for territory. There was a report ten years ago there were originally 7 masters."
"Oh, I didn''t know that, Alexa told me we can make some serious coins there, I have been wanting to get more skill proficiency lately. With all my stat boosts, I feel that I can run away for my life if needed."
Sarah just looked gloomy when I mentioned ''run away'', maybe I should''ve said I could be them all no matter what, like an idiot?
Angry red lips Alexa walks in behind me, and says "So you''re finally here? What have you been doing these past two days? Goofing off at the Tailorshop with Clyde? Messing around at the orphanage with Petra? Sneaking to the church to see Mia?"
I roll my eyes at her, she''s obviously upset with me ignoring every time she try''s to come see me. She knows I collect damaged clothing from the church, deliver repaired clean clothing from the Tailorshop, and eat free breakfasts at the orphanage just to spend time with everybody I got adopted away from.
Her belligerent attitude keeps making me mad and uninterested in her, no matter how cute she is as well. "So, who contracted a couple of rookies to escort a caravan? Surprisingly Abe said I could go too... Same with Edna. They looked like they are happy for extra income coming in."
Alexa looks upset again with me ignoring her question, "Honestly, I want to like you, but just can''t. Sir Alex the Jailor recommended to the merchant, Oliver Plume, to take us along as an investment to future great adventurers. Oliver readily accepted since as a community, we are all investing in each other to grow and develop."
A strange man with a feather logo embroidered into his vest appears as we are talking, with Sarah observing the conversation not know how to include herself. With this as her chance, she speaks up to the strange man. "Oh Mister Plume, these two are the up and coming adventurers Sir Alex told you about. My sister Alex, and the Tailorshop boy Ren."
Muster Plume looks me and Alexa up and down, trying to gauge how competent we are. "So you two are the ones, according to your gear, the girl is the better choice of an investment, and you boy are the risky one, you look like fodder."Enjoying this book? Seek out the original to ensure the author gets credit.
Oh wh-what? Did he call me, the Soldier of Fortune, fodder? Okay I can see what he means with me just having generic villager clothing with a dagger equipped to my belt with no prep bag for the trip. "I heard you are providing for us, as well paying us two silvers each to take you to Halo city?"
"Correct boy!" Mister Plume says, "I am bringing our speciality feathers for writing and arrows, as well, our famous product of blank badges to sell. The idea that someone has a prepared badge that can be re-used after being killed was our idea. Understand how amazing our Family products are!"
I guess it is amazing in his perspective, but I want to get going on this trip already. "Can we go already?"
"Watch your tongue boy! I am your boss in this contract, be grateful I even accepted you two in. But yes, I came here to get going in haste!"
Why not just say, come on let''s go? Unless this was an unneeded interview that had to happen, so he could trust us... Anyway he led us to our seniors that would be travelling with us.
Jim, and Robin Stain, the Stain family are a bunch of mostly mercenaries/adventurers. While the Hubble''s deal with how farms and politics work. Sir Alex, I found out, was a Stain family member that fell in love with a Hubble family member, as to why he was a town guard.
Jim and Robin waved at us and started walking a fast pace of us ahead on the road. Their job was to scout several minutes of us to be able to report any ambushes that might, and clear monsters from the road.
Even though I should''ve actually trained for real with Alexa, I felt like I could handle whatever destiny brings us. Do adventurers regularly scout ahead to report dangers? My gut says trouble is going to happen.
I roll my magical die and got the bunny girl Izzy to appear, "So half a month you say, but with this skill with the lowest odds to meet, gets you to maybe help?
The pink haired and eyed girl smirks, " Yea I am big on free will, and by getting me from a dice roll deserves my time." She then winks at me and frowns at a frowning Alexa. "So you are his teammate huh? Maybe I can encourage the ogre to go somewhere else besides of sleeping on the highway you are travelling down hmm? Or I could encourage another ogre to appear and see how your luck skills work out?"
I too frown at Izzy, I know for sure now she is planning events that will happen to me.
Izzy points at Alexa, "You stay behind at your tavern, Ren doesn''t need you unless you want to fight two ogres?"
Really? Jealous over me who isn''t a god of a stat, and threatening a girl to stay away from me who I don''t even care about?
Alexa looks shocked, "You wouldn''t, would you? Never mind those ears and eyes tell me who you are easily. The bored luck goddess of the three. Why are you all different species even though you are sis-"
"Don''t say it Alexa!" I cover her mouth remembering what not ask, from Mia the priestess. Their species!
"Three, you''re getting three ogres, see you never again girl!" Izzy dissapears in a pink glimmering shine.
"Well, three ogres huh, and we can''t even warn Jimmy and Robin too." I say.
"Seems like it." Mister Plume surprisingly responds. "Alright let''s go, the scout would easily spot the ogres regardless of a goddess saying it''s coming for us. We can retreat back for security, if needed.
We take off, after three uneventful hours we camp for three hours and head off again to Halo City.
