《Delusions & Illusions》 She could only stare back. The gray sky was starting to drizzle when he switched on the stolen Macintosh. Its motor and internal processors hummed softly in the background. The young man took off his sweaty shirt and carelessly dumped it on the bed. He then took a cool wet towel from the basin, wiped the blood off his lips and forehead. Dominic felt the cold grip of a hand on his shoulder. He spun around, panicked and tensed, only to find a pair of lime green eyes locked onto his own dark blue ones. A surge of relief filled him when he realized those eyes belonged to Holly. It''s just Holly. Dominic was afraid that it was the stalker whom he fought on his way back. His shoulders relaxed visibly as he sat on the bed and tapped a few times on the keyboard. He then turned his attention back to the girl standing next to him. ¡°What do you want?¡± he asked tersely, like a tsundere. She continued to gaze at him, her eyes then turned towards the blood stained towel lying on his bed. Her eyes grew as big as marbles before taking off. Probably to get the first aid kit. Dominic went back to work on the laptop, typing away furiously while his brain strained to cope with the data displayed on the screen. He did not notice Holly when she came back with a box of bandages in her arms. He winced slightly when she placed a plaster over a minor gash on his forehead. His digital watch beeped when it turned nine o¡¯clock. And as if on cue, he jumped up and out of the bed. ¡°I¡¯ve got it!¡± Dominic exclaimed and then started muttering calculations and scientific terminologies under his own breathe. Once he confirmed that his theory was sound, he immediately grabbed his cell phone, dialed a number he memorized and waited for the other end to pick up.Stolen from its rightful place, this narrative is not meant to be on Amazon; report any sightings. ¡°Hello?¡± said Dominic, ¡°Yes, I need to speak to Dr. John. Could you put me on please?¡± There was a pause before he continued. ¡°Hi, good evening Dr. John. I know it¡¯s late but please hear me out. I think I¡¯ve found a cure to the¡" A pause. "No, no, it¡¯s true. Please, I beg-...¡± He was cut off. Dominic swore silently before he tried calling other doctors and health lecturers he knew. None of them gave him their ear though. It was either a ¡°doctor so-and-so is busy right now¡± or a ¡°please don¡¯t waste my time, Dominic¡± sort of response. He didn¡¯t give up though. It was near midnight when he made his last call. It was to his parents, they were well known health experts in their time and were his role models and inspiration to join the medical field. ¡°Hi mom,¡± said Dominic, ¡°Good evening, is dad there? No, that''s alright, just put me on loudspeaker then¡ Hey, dad, I¡¯m sorry to wake you both up but this is urgent and of great importance to-..." A pause. "You have to listen to me. This time, this time it¡¯s for real. No, please-...¡± They cut him off. Dominic was distraught. His own parents hung up on him, it wasn¡¯t bad signal connection. He was cut off. Dominic stood stone still, staring off into space, his mouth hung dry. It was some time before he came back to his senses. Holly, who was asleep, stirred on the bed, sat up and rubbed her eyes. He tossed his mobile towards the table, but it fell short and landed on the carpeted floor. He then sat beside her, tugging a strand of her sunflower-yellow hair aside from her face. ¡°Holly, you believe me,¡± said Dominic, ¡°don¡¯t you?¡± Holly placed her hands over his. He took his hand away from her face then. ¡°Do you believe me, Holly?¡± he pleaded. ¡°Do you believe that I¡¯ve found the cure?¡± He looked desperately into her eyes for answer, for acceptance, for acknowledgement. She could only stare back. Ill be back for dinner. Kicking the sheets away from him, Dominic trudged towards the kitchen, following the faint scent of cooked food. A cup of coffee was prepared along with a British plate of eggs and hams on the table set in the middle with two chairs placed on opposite sides. Holly was reading Fallen by Lauren Kate at the side of the table that¡¯s closer to the sink. ¡°Holly,¡± Dominic said, ¡°How many times have you read that book again?¡± With eyes glued to the pages, Holly pointed briefly towards the owl-shaped clock that hung behind him. ¡°It¡¯s afternoon, eh?¡± He said to no one in particular. ¡°I¡¯ve been out that long.¡± With one hand, he drained the contents in the cup, and with the other, he snatched the thin piece of ham and chewed on it, as he stalked out of the kitchen. Dominic stopped by the door and pondered on his next course of action. He was attacked the evening before on the way home, but managed to get away with a few injuries. He found the cure to a disease everyone thinks does not exist. His parents hung up on him. Should he go to the university today? Will they let him enter the research and development laboratory after his persistent calls from yesterday? They should, right? He has to test the formula of the serum for the cure. That would be enough of a reason, right? Surely, the lecturers there would not blacklist him from exercising the rights to work in the lab.The tale has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the violation. Dominic decided then that he would not let rejection bring him down. Not when he has come this far and especially not when he found something that may help humankind survive the next attack. He paced all around, at times he¡¯d be in the room, eyes flicking up and down the laptop¡¯s screen, at other times he¡¯d be flipping through medical concordance and magazines in the living room. Occasionally, he¡¯d visit the kitchen to check on Holly. Picking up his mobile from the floor, Dominic tapped a couple of times on the touchscreen after an hour of pacing. ¡°Holly,¡± he called from the living room, ¡°I¡¯m going out¡ to meet Jim.¡± He knew she heard his hesitation. Holly dog-eared her current page before setting it down on the dining table and ran to the bedroom. ¡°That girl¡¡± He muttered under his breathe. He felt a pressure being applied onto his right wrist as he was halfway out the door. Dominic turned around to find Holly with eyes cast down, with his coat in her other hand. He turn towards her and took the coat. ¡°I¡¯ll be back for dinner.¡± Dominic said as he closed the door behind him.
