《Metal Heart》


 Who am I?

    Bright. White. Lights.


    Why is it so bright? Where am I? Who am I? What is going on?!


    These thoughts swarmed in my head as I tried to move. My body couldn¡¯t feel anything. It couldn¡¯t move. I opened my mouth and tried to make a noise. Anything, anything so to alert someone that I needed help.


    ¡°He-he-help!¡± I stuttered out. My ears exploded with noise. Screaming? Yelling? No, cheering. Multiple people? Yes, definitely more than one. Whoever is cheering sounds happy. Why would they be happy when I just called for help?


    I feel something on my leg. It burns.

    I manage to turn my head just enough to see a woman sitting in a chair next to the table


    I am laying on. The thoughts come back.


    Who are you? Who am I? Where am I? Why is it so bright? Get your hand off my leg. Now, now, nownownownow-

    ¡°Doctor Mary Ann Schmitz,¡± I repeated, thinking for a second. I don¡¯t know that name.


    I gazed at the woman. Brown hair in a bob that curls in at her chin. Barely noticable laugh lines. Tan skin tone. A brush of freckles you would need to be really close to her to see.


    ¡°Why is it so loud?¡± I asked, realizing the cheering was still going on in the background. ¡°And why can¡¯t I move?¡±


    ¡°The other doctors are happy.¡± She looked at me with a wide smile on her face. ¡°You can¡¯t move because you¡¯re strapped down.¡±


    My eyes widened. Why would I need to be strapped down? Isn''t that something bad? Used for torture purposes? The questions are back in my head. I needed to get out all the details of what¡¯s going on.


    ¡°Where are we? Why is it so bright? Why are they so happy? Get your hand off my leg!¡± I asked in a rush, accidentally blurting out the last part. The burning in my leg was growing. The first thing she did was take her hand off. The sensation immediately stopped.


    ¡°We are in Borins Laboratory. The lights are bright so we can see everything easily. Everyone is so happy because we just discovered something incredible.¡±


    ¡°What did they discover?¡± I said after she finished. My head was starting to pound from all the cheering. I tried to cover my ears with my hands. Then I remembered about being strapped down.
