《Curves of the Game》 Chapter 1 - Cheating for Fun Sam opens up a shipping box and takes out an open faced helmet. His newly purchased game and hardware all in one easy to use device. It cost him last month¡¯s pay check but should be worth it he thinks as he walks over to the couch to try it out. A newly released VRMMORPG. The first of its kind virtual reality massive role playing game world. Not just some 3d projection or laggy brain interface but a true full dive experience giving players what they always dreamed of, an adventure in another world that seemed as real as the one they came from. For the first few months this new technological wonder went mostly unnoticed. Made by a no name game studio with a well-trodden and boringly predictable generic fantasy setting. Combined with wild claims of revolutionary gaming experience, no release of information and a price tag only the rich, or at least truly addicted gamer, could afford no one bought it. But tentatively a few tried it and were amazed at the experience. Slowly secret whispers in online forums started to appear. Soon gaming journals began to send in their writers to review. After three months mainstream media was interviewing anyone they could about how great this new miracle game was. Being the jaded gamer he was Sam waited on purchasing the game. He¡¯d been burned before by over hyped garbage only to waste money on a game he¡¯d play for an hour before throwing away. A combination of being easily bored and exacting in desired gaming experience meant Sam played few games for more than a day or two. So to buy such an expensive game was a real gamble. At least this time if he finds the game boring he should be able to resell it. The hardware for the game is deceptively simple, little more than a loose fitting helmet with a cord for power. Setting it up was just as simple. It found the nearest wi-fi and connected without issue. The final step was to put it on and hit the single button on the side. Compared to current generation VR this was a real change. Most had to go through complicated brain reading synchronization, hundreds of settings to adjust the video and audio feedback and so on. Even after the setup they were still laggy, bug prone and had frequent shutdowns requiring hardware resets. All was going well until Sam logged in. Now he was left with a problem. Most would call this a great security feature and be very happy, but not Sam. For Sam playing the game was only part of the enjoyable experience. Finding exploits and better yet using them to annoy others was where Sam found his true enjoyment. However cheating, finding exploits and trolling the players are only possible when one is anonymous. Which right now with his name, real body and real face was not possible to do. Upon logging in he found the game does not give the player any choice on gender, looks, or name. It uses the person¡¯s name and real life looks to make the VR body. Should any miscreant start abusing the game it would be trivial for the game company or police or just other players to force him to face the consequences of his actions. Sam is left wondering how to hack a system with no interface. He¡¯s still in the character creation area, staring at a perfect duplicate of himself with a screen next to his VR self for setting up initial stats and skills. Fiddling with some of the screen options Sam notices his body duplicate does change slightly. Choosing a different race, elf, makes his ears a bit pointy. Dwarf makes him shorter and stockier by a bit. Adding strength gives him a bit more muscle. But all in all it¡¯s obviously still himself. He can also change some small features by poking and prodding. There goes his 50 lb beer gut, a more chiseled chin, perhaps add a bit more hair to hide his balding spot. A nice perfectly idealized body of himself is born and all of it is useless to him. An hour of fiddling with the settings doesn¡¯t really get a body that is much different. Maybe trying to log on and log off repeatedly might provide a way to hack this system. Using the in game menu he logs off. Then pushing the button on the helmet to log on. Log off. Log on. Log off. Log on. Static. Log off. Stumble to the bathroom to vomit. Then to take several aspirin to calm down his migraine headache. Perhaps that was not the best idea of his life. However it did allow him to understand some of the inner workings of this new VR game. First the log on process took much longer in reality than what he experienced. To Sam the logon was watching a circling wait symbol for 30 seconds, a few seconds of blackness then another couple seconds of game loading. Maybe a minute all told. However around 10 minutes had actually passed from pushing the log on button to game entry. Another clue was his headache. The most important clue was the sound he heard on the last log on. A sound of roaring static. The same sound Sam often heard when he goes into a lucid dream. Maybe the VR works by inducing a controlled lucid dream he thinks. It would make sense as REM sleep paralyzes the body, provides a suspension of believe and generally tends to gloss over or fill in any missing parts. No reason to reinvent something that is already in place. The VR would just need to induce REM sleep and provide guiding stimulation to make a very realistic gaming experience. Better yet it gives him an idea on how to abuse this function. Sam gets an old turn dial timer, some duct tape and tooth picks then attaches it to the logon button. He takes a couple sleeping pills and goes to sleep. One loud roaring static sound later and he¡¯s now in his own lucid dream. Step one accomplished. Now that he has a dream interface he should be able to setup his lucid dream in such a way to exploit the VR¡¯s lucid dream. First to change his VR body. He highly doubts each helmet has full body imaging or even knows what he looks like. Far too much work. Especially since everyone¡¯s brain has its own body representation he bets that the helmet just picks up on that. He spends the next few minutes imaging himself as the current most popular male actor. His day old scruff, his hair¡­ color¡­ what was his hair color, brown? His body¡­ which is¡­ something ladies like? Well crap. What did the actor look like? Sam has seen him in several recent movies. He can kind of picture how the actor looks. Sam is sure he would recognize the actor on sight but apparently he never paid enough attention to the actor to really know what he looks like. Sam needs another body he knows like his own. The first image he can think of is the current hottest female model. Every curve, every tiny bump, the gorgeous hair, the sexy voice, he can picture it all clearly. He thinks maybe he should cut down on the porn browsing but might as well use the image. If this works as a proof of concept he can always try again after he¡¯s studied some male actors. This tale has been unlawfully obtained from Royal Road. If you discover it on Amazon, kindly report it. But why try out one hack when he can do two. Sam also imagines his new glamor model body is great at everything. Perfect stats, perfect abilities, goddess like power, a true genius in every sense of the word. As he continues to try to hold this image in his mind waiting for the VR helmet to activate he starts to get a bit bored. Looking down he starts to enjoy having a woman¡¯s point of view and drools at his new busty chest. This is a very interesting view he thinks as he gazes at his own perfect body. A tone sounds. Looking up Sam sees many geometric objects appearing and merging together. A blue translucent wall appears and crosses through Sam and the surroundings. He thinks this must be a detailed brain scan and game setup. The various odd sounds and images continue for a bit before everything fades to black. A few moments later Sam finds himself again in the character creation screen. Things are a bit different than last time however. He is looking at his new female avatar. Success! Even better, looking at the stat screen it has far more points and options to choose from. [This seems far too easy, did the developers assume no one could hack this system?] Sam thinks to himself. If so they were wonderfully naive. [Well I should fully log in to make sure this works and there is no server side checks]. Although the current VR body is sexy Sam alters it a bit. A tall 6 foot height. More noticeable feminine curves. Nicely shaped D cups. A commanding contralto voice. Deep icy blue eyes. Finally Sam makes the VR body have luxurious silky golden hair in a loose braid down to her butt. With the physical looks adjusted to his tastes Sam looks at the stat screen. All stats start out at 10 and a normal player gets another 30 points to distribute. They can spend it on stats, skills and traits. SAM however has 99 extra stat points. Like most games the number of perks one gets is tied to how much money one spends. The demo of this game only gave out 10 extra points. Players quickly found out typical NPC¡¯s in game start with this amount. Normal is 30 and players that bought the game were known as Adventurers. Buying the Noble package, which costs the same as a new car, would gain the player 50 points. The gaming company¡¯s website also listed even higher ranks one could buy. Monarch for 70. Divinity for 99. The price for monarch meant only the wealthy had bought this level. And it¡¯s thought that no one had bought Divinity level yet because of its almost small country GDP price tag. There were additional perks too for each level. First the max base stat was 10 + 5 * purchased rank so an Adventurer had 15 max stat, a Noble 20, Monarch 25, Divinity 30. Next was how far one could advance. NPC¡¯s couldn¡¯t and were stuck with the same job and title. Adventures could become minor nobility such as knights, city mayors and the like. Nobles could become anything up to duke but not princesses or kings. This included other similar level of titles such as merchant lord, sky ship captain or dragon knight. Monarchs were as the name suggested, also mobile fortress generals, war chiefs, bandit kings, or beast lords. Finally Divinity, the developers would create a new custom built player race for the owner of this extravagance. Only 7 divine race founders were available for purchase and each would be aligned with one of the seven virtues. The founder would also get a unique divine skill for free. Others of the race could purchase it at the cost of 10-50 points depending on its power. And newly created players would start with an additional 10 points if they choose this race. Giddy with excitement Sam looks at the race selection. Human, Dwarf, Elf, Half-Elf, Orc, Half-Orc, Halfling, Gnome, and Nephilim. Nothing new. [Oh well too much to hope for that devs had created a custom hidden race]. Might as well go human for this toss away character. Looking at the stats he sees his change a bit. 12 Grace, 13 Appearance, 11 Will, 11 Intelligence. [That¡¯s odd, thought they were supposed to all start at 10.] That¡¯s right, race and gender change them he remembers. Each race/gender combo gets +3, +2, +1 to one of the nine base states, which also increases the max base stat level. With an additional +1 race specific modifier. Human male gets +3 Leadership, +2 Strength, +1 Perception, and +1 Intelligence for example. This sexual dimorphism and racial variation caused the social justice warriors to howl with anger. However the company stood its ground and said the slight changes between races and genders added realism to the game and players can spend their bonus points as they wished. An interesting aspect of this game was that base stats were both important and not that important at the same time. In game one could increase stats with hard work, or gain traits and skills as well. However the rate of gain was dependent on the base stat or skill. Traits one either had or not but were the hardest to get and required difficult quests to be completed. So a player with 20 base strength would gain strength with half the effort as a player with 10 base strength. The 10 base strength player could get to 30 total strength with a lot of hard work and the 20 base strength player would stay at 20 if they did nothing. So to min max effectively stats were important but if one wanted to change their focus it was possible, if more time consuming, to do so. Sam of course maxed appearance to 33. [Can¡¯t stop staring, too beautiful to comprehend.] Slowly Sam is able to decrease appearance to the noble human female max of 23. Apparently the helmet directly influences emotional parts of the brain as well. [I¡¯ll have to watch out for that and make sure to kill every handsome man before THAT happens.] Normally Sam would love to have such a cheat level of stat but a cheat appearance is far too easy for game moderators to spot and ban once they stop drooling. As this is a toss away character he just evenly puts points into all the stats. Well mostly, the perfectionist in him forces him to min max a bit at least. Once satisfied with his character he hits accept. Chapter 2 - Sexy Entrance and Parody Beginnings ¡°Error detected¡± [Damn, it was too good to be true.] ¡°Name unreadable¡­ Please say name¡­¡± ¡°Sam¡­antha¡± ¡°Welcome to the World!¡± The opening credits play and Sam finds himself in the beginning area. [This game is far too easy to hack kukuku.] A message appears before Sam. Welcome! Unlike other games there is no starting tutorial and you are allowed to explore as you please. Of course we won¡¯t leave you without help. The villagers in the nearby village are very helpful and are happy to answer any questions you have about the game. Some may even make requests of you and provide rewards for completing them. Also you may have noticed there are no starting classes. This is a game without limits. Advance yourself as you please. There are jobs such as Knight, Farmer, Blacksmith and so on that can be acquired and will improve your growth in many ways but they are optional and only gained by questing for them. To access the system menu please make a fist, extend the fore finger and middle finger and make a swiping motion downward. This menu also has the logout button, game settings and real money shop. [Well it all worked. Time to logout and make my real character.] Making the system access motion he attempts to logout. Sam makes the system access motion again. Then again. [Why isn¡¯t the system menu appearing?] A few more attempts at various speeds and Sam is starting to worry. [Could the dream within a dream messed up the interface reader?] He guesses that the motion is not being read since the helmet interface is attempting to read Sam¡¯s mental action in his lucid dream and not this one. [Will I be stuck here until my real body starves? Will this become my death game? Will I have to panic and ask random players for help and be ignored? HA!] Sam knows he¡¯s perfectly safe as he has been reading information about the game for many weeks now on forums. He¡¯s even read the hardware and safety manual that came with the game. All to better know how to exploit the game of course. The developers might have thought their game is hack proof and didn¡¯t bother spending any time on security. They did however spend a huge amount of time on the games safety features. There are many monitors on the helmet that will wake up the player if any problem is detected. The helmet will even auto-call emergency services if the health of the player is in danger. Even if nothing is wrong the helmet will force player logout after eight hours of continuous game play. Sam read many player complaints about being forced to logout in the forums. The helmet also includes safety features to prevent any kind of power surge getting though and no onboard battery that could catch fire. Truly a no trapped in virtual space and death game possible helmet. So Sam now finds himself trapped in virtual space. [Well guess that¡¯s what I get for hacking.] The starter area is a generic grassy field with a few trees here and there. Situated in a large valley with mountains on all sides but the west. A river runs down from one of the mountains and out the west side as well. A small village sits in the center of the valley adjacent to the river. Sam looks around and decides to head to the village. [Might as well learn about the game while I¡¯m stuck here. Also need to find a secluded spot to learn about some personal things as well kukuku.] As the game is still relatively new the starter area is packed with players. Who seem to be taking numerous hits from starter mobs as Sam walks pass. His starting gear of skin tight breeches, knee high boots, and snug fitting white blouse helps this effect even more. By the time Sam reaches the village he has quite the following of male players. It¡¯s only a matter of time before one of them works up enough courage to say something annoyingly stupid. The only question in Sam¡¯s mind is how to deal with the inevitable pick up line. Does he accept or does he crush the poor man¡¯s hopes and dreams in the most public and insulting way possible. Sam has much experience playing the G.I.R.L. (guy in real life). After all it¡¯s one of the easier ways to get free gear, be lazy, and otherwise get into parties inner circles quickly. It¡¯s also great for causing a great deal of mischief and distrust between party members. How Sam deals with the initial interaction will determine which party type he will join. If he accepts he¡¯ll join a desperate male party which allows him to essential do nothing but be eye candy while getting power leveled and most of the choice gear. However he¡¯ll have to constantly deflect all the real life hookups and phone number requests. Also he¡¯ll have to play a healer or ranged job which isn¡¯t really his style. Next he could call the man a sexist pig and join a bitter all-female group. Which has some fun vicious gossip options but tends to betray the prettiest one in the group because of jealousy. As he¡¯s likely to be the prettiest one this will not likely give him the easy power leveling and non-public game knowledge he currently wants. He could always try to act naive and use that to get into a long term stable party. The best stable groups are those made up of married couples, but groups composed of coworkers or long term friendships are almost as good. The thought of destroying a stable group after taking everything they have does appeal to him. Sadly stable groups rarely play enough to truly power level others and he plans on deleting this character soon anyway. No the only real option is to get the beta male white knight harem. Being the queen bee will allow him to determine where the party goes and how loot is divided. Great for forcing the almost slave like boys to give him the best pick of loot, all the quest drops first and even go pick up quests to share with him. They will even give out their closely guarded gaming secrets in an attempt to impress him with their expertise. With decision made Sam enters the village and then looks around slightly confused. Like succulent bait for hungry wolves this slightly vulnerable appearance will draw in his first victim of the day. Within moments a smarmy looking shorty saunters up. Sam knows that this player must have increased his height to the max and still came up short. A true manlet with short man syndrome, perfect for the reaction Sam wants. ¡°Hey beautiful, how¡¯s about you and me go penetrate some pussy mobs together?¡± Sam slowly looks the shorty up and down and says quietly in a haughty voice, ¡°I doubt your sword could reach. Combined with your obvious lack of weapon control I¡¯m sure all would be quickly disappointed. That is if you could even draw it without accidently stabbing nearby children. Maybe you should keep solo playing till you know which side to grip? Now toddle back to mommy and let me talk to someone who can properly show a woman around town.¡± With each sentence the midget gets redder in the face. The only thing holding him back is his knowledge of the games player versus player settings. Unless in same party, on fiends list or pvp flagged one player can¡¯t get within an inch of touching another player. Even if those settings are true a player still can¡¯t touch the eyes, mouth or below the belt/above the thighs without additional setting flags. However at the realization of his own impotence the shorty is driven into an incoherent rage. ¡°You fucking cunt, I¡¯ll show you!¡± He draws his short sword and his name goes red with pvp setting turned on. ¡°I dare you to fight me, step outside the town and I¡¯ll show you how a real man handles his sword.¡± Sam looks frightened and backs away timidly. ¡°I just logged in to the game and a man is going to assault me? Someone please help!¡± Several of Sam¡¯s potential party slaves¡¯ flag red and attack the enraged would be lady killer. After a short and obviously disappointing battle Manlet is vanquished. ¡°Thank you. Can some of you help me start in the game?¡± Sam says as he looks around. Sam notices several players flagging themselves for pvp after the fight in an attempt to appear that they helped. He sends out party invites to three that flagged red after the fight. Those flagged for pvp but can¡¯t look a woman in the eye are likely the right level of useful but obedient slaves that Sam wants. For job types Sam has to guess which ones to pick based on gear as only the player name is displayed. Guy in white robe, guy with black hat, and a guy with a bow. Hopefully an archer, healer and mage. Perfect leveling team for early levels as mobs are fairly weak and made for solo play. ¡°Thanks for joining my party. I¡¯m Samantha, please call me Sam, and I would love to hear about how to play the game from you three.¡± The three stooges introduce themselves but Sam ignores most of what they say. Sam learns that the one with the bow is an elf archer hopeful, he¡¯s still on the quest to actually be an archer. With annoying Legolas looks except with curly red hair. Sam calls him Carrot. Next is the dress wearing human altar boy. Sam calls him Bowl for his bowl haircut. At least he has healing magic. Finally Potato, who is a lowly human rogue. Short reach daggers, paper thin armor, no hp, useless combat skills and worthless out of combat abilities. Rogues tend to know a lot about games and know what sells well so he¡¯s not a total waste. As for the name Potato, the reason is simple, he¡¯s a couch potato. He spends all his time at the auction house and commons area making shady business deals while never leaving town. At the end of introductions Potato ask Sam, ¡°Have you decided on which job you will be going for first?¡± ¡°I was thinking of maybe something like a swordsman or better yet magic swordsman.¡± ¡°Magic difficult. Takes time.¡± Says Bowl. ¡°Well let¡¯s start by buying the best swordsman starting gear. We can collect all the basic adventurer quests as we walk around town as well.¡± Offers Potato. ¡°That will be great! Hopefully it¡¯s not too much, I mean I really don¡¯t need all of that do I?¡± ¡°It¡¯s no problem for a genius businessman like me. It¡¯s always best to use the best right? As for the magic part I¡¯ll buy you the starter books. Most of the quest is just memorization and math problems. Only reason it takes so long is the difficult practical tests.¡± ¡°Oh thank you so much!¡± Sam gushes. The newly formed party walks only a couple feet before an NPC guard speaks up. ¡°Welcome to the village of New Beginnings! Normally an entrance fee is charged at village gates but with the troubled times and influx of new heroes such a fee is being waved. Please stay awhile and listen to¡­¡± The tale has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the violation. Potatoes keeps walking toward a nondescript wooden building, ¡°Ignore the mobile sign post. He just goes on about typical story fluff. Ah here¡¯s the adventurer¡¯s guild. Sam you should register here first. The ID card gives free entrance to towns, access to teleport gates and cheaper merchant prices. This will also be where we pick up many of the basic quests. Although there are many hidden quests and job specific quests that we¡¯ll need to hunt around for.¡± As Sam walks up to the registration counter. ¡°If everyone gets an adventure ID card what¡¯s the point of all its perks?¡± ¡°The card gets confiscated for doing criminal acts or if you have a bad reputation with the local adventurer¡¯s guild. Unless you plan to go evil it¡¯s not an issue but all evil players have to get their quests and items via player controlled towns or middlemen.¡± Potato explains. ¡°I see you¡¯re a new adventurer, thanks for choose Adventure Guild United to begin your questing. I¡¯ll be your quest receptionist Maggie. Please fill out these forms.¡± Sam fills out the meaningless forms then gives them back to Maggie. As the NPC puts the forms into what suspiciously looks like a paper shredder a familiar cutting and humming sound can be heard. Laughing at the odd look on Sam¡¯s face Carrot responses, ¡°Ha ha everyone has that same look when the booth babe does that. It¡¯s basically a magic paper shredder that converts the forms into an ID card.¡± Sam looks around the guild as the magic paper shredder hums. There is registration counter with three receptionists at three counters. No post office one worker at five counters here. Then what looks like a small convenience store. Of course instead of selling snacks and magazines it sells potions and basic adventuring equipment. Like a convenience store it also sells dubious herbal supplements and lotto tickets. Another store like counter is next to it with a blackboard listing numerous items and their prices. Apparently this games version of a pawn shop which buys junk mob drops. Finally the rest of the area is taken up by a pub with several NPC¡¯s and a couple players eating and drinking. The pubs walls are covered in large yellow sticky notes. Apparently these are the quests of the adventurer¡¯s guild. Sam picks up all the beginner quests off the pub¡¯s walls. Ding. Maggie takes a laminated card from the magic paper shredder and hands it to Sam. [Laminated card in a fantasy game? Thought this was supposed to be realistic. What is this, magic plastic? And sticky notes for quests? No wonder people¡¯s first reaction to the game was so poor. The realistic feel is completely destroyed by this parody ambience.] Sam remembers reading a developer post about this. The rest of the game is very immersive but the developers thought this would be too much for new players so made the first town a combination of the modern world and the game world. They hoped this would ease new players in to the game. However it just comes across as a poorly crafted game world. Maggie asks, ¡°I see you¡¯ve made a party already would you like to register a party name?¡± Sam thinks a bit then, ¡°Sure, call us Samantha¡¯s Newbie Guidance Operation.¡± ¡°That¡¯s an odd party name¡­ Well the next place to visit is the guardhouse next door for the swordsman job quest.¡± Potato guides the way. Entering the guardhouse it looks more like a modern dojo with mirrors on the walls, polished wooden floors and a bunch of men in martial arts Gi top¡¯s and yoga pant bottoms slashing wooden dummies with wooden swords. [Wasn¡¯t this supposed to be western magic fantasy? Silly mix of random kendo with yoga class feel going on here.] It was almost like someone who didn¡¯t understand modern culture was asked to make this first area. Sam walks up to the man with a black belt watching everything, ¡°I wish to learn how to fight can you teach me?¡± ¡°Well lass I can teach you everything about the martial arts. Which school would you like to learn?¡± Sam decided to be an ass and say, ¡°I¡¯d like to learn Kunst des Fechtens.¡± ¡°Late medieval, renaissance or early modern? Also blossfechten or harnischfechten?¡± ¡°Uuun¡± Sam was not expecting the NPC to know anything about real sword techniques. Sam knows nothing about them either other than reading about the German long sword style name in a manga recently. ¡°What do you recommend?¡± ¡°All fighting arts of early modern combat with harnischfechten so you can learn with armor. I also recommend picking up zweihander, kurzes schwert and schild techniques as depending on opponent it can be useful to switch weapons.¡± ¡°Sure that sounds good¡­¡± Sam has no idea what that means but the martial instructor seems very pleased about it all and says ¡°Great then you should get four of the arts weapons and practice swinging them around a bit to get a feel for them. A thousand times each or so.¡± ¡°Bangin, I think you just found an upgraded quest! Did you train in that sword school in real life? It sounded German?¡± Carrot asks. ¡°Err no? I just wanted to see the NPC reaction to a sword school I read in a book.¡± Potato replies, ¡°You lucked out then. Normally the quest givers seem bored and give out just basic rewards. But if you ask them just right or complete a quest really well they sometimes look happy and can give out really good rewards. An upgraded quest. Mostly it¡¯s not worth doing since it¡¯s easier to just complete a lot of normal quest than to figure out the trigger to upgrade one.¡± ¡°I hadn¡¯t heard of that. I only heard something about common and hidden quests?¡± Sam questions. ¡°Oh that¡¯s the quest classification players give quests. Easy to get quests are called common and normally in the adventurer¡¯s guild. Market quests are market demand driven. If there is a famine for instance a lot of provide food quests will show up from merchants and in adventurer¡¯s guild as well. Market quests are mostly player driven. Either by direct request to the adventurer¡¯s guild for supplies if the player has a lot of gold and doesn¡¯t want to farm the items. Or by indirect when the player asks for a house built then the NPC¡¯s will create the quests to get lumber and nails and such. Hidden quests are the harder to find quests. Uncommon hidden quests just take talking to a random town NPC or picking up a mob drop that sort of thing. The rare hidden quests take a lot of work to find like befriending the entire starter town or climbing the highest mountain, waiting 12 days then talk to the hermit that appears. Oh there are also joke quests but those ones never give rewards and you should avoid them.¡± ¡°Joke quests?¡± ¡°Ya, devs Easter egg quests I guess. For example there is a sculptor that will give you a quest to become a legendary combat sculptor. Supposedly an unbeatable combat class that also sculpts. Talk to him and he¡¯ll give you a chain of quests to get him items and do chores around the house. None of the quests has a reward. Once you complete the chain he tells you the secret to becoming a legendary combat sculptor. ¡®The secret is to get others to give you free materials then sell everything for as much as you can.¡¯ He then laughs at you and runs off.¡± ¡°I¡¯m surprised no one has killed him yet.¡± ¡°Oh they have, many times, but he always resurrects as a powerful undead then one shots players. Even worse he loots all their gear and sells it on the market for outrageous prices. Of course you also get evil flagged for killing an NPC so it¡¯s just not worth it.¡± ¡°That¡¯s so mean. I guess I¡¯ll avoid talking to any nasty sculptors. So how do I keep track of all these quests? Is there a limit?¡± ¡°Ha this game has no limits! At least that¡¯s the ad line. However I recommend never picking up more than ten quests normally. A lot have hidden time limits and it¡¯s hard to keep track of more than that. As for quest tracking the next place we go will have an item for that.¡± Sam¡¯s NGO walks in to the next building. A little bell rings as the door opened. Looking around Sam sees a variety of weapons and armor on racks in a large room. Behind the sales counter he sees a window into a blacksmith¡¯s forge with several blacksmiths hammering various metal parts on anvils lined up in a row. It reminds him of many car mechanic shops he¡¯s been in. Carrot walks up to the counter and rings the bell. ¡°Yo blacksmith you have customers.¡± One of the blacksmiths comes to the counter, ¡°What can I do you for?¡± ¡°This sexy lady needs the best gear you can make, dawg.¡± ¡°Uhm I need a schild, zweihander, kurzes schwert, harnischfechten I guess?¡± ¡°Harnischfechten? You must be new to the Kunst des Fechtens. I know just the gear for it. Hold on a second I¡¯ll need to go to the back to get it.¡± The blacksmith walks to a door on the far side of the room and leaves. When the blacksmith is gone Potato takes a blue glob out of his belt pouch and places it on a display dagger. ¡°What¡¯s that for?¡± Sam asks ¡°Oh it¡¯s to start the next quest, you can wait for it to happen normally but this way is faster.¡± Sam hears some clanking and a grunt. The door opens and the blacksmith returns with an arm full of swords and armor. Putting it all down on the counter he points out each of the pieces. ¡°This is the kriegsmesser or war knife in the common tongue.¡± Looks to be a curved single bladed one-handed sword. ¡°Zweihander¡± A very long two-handed sword. ¡°Buckler¡± Dinner plate sized metal round shield. ¡°And dagger, decided against the staff and polearm, better to focus on the zweihander for now. Also as a new student full plate is just too much so instead a cervelliere (metal skull cap), metal breastplate and the rest being leather gear.¡± ¡°Full plate? Unless you have a strength over 40 and endurance and grace over 20 you can hardly move in the stuff.¡± Potato comments. ¡°Indeed it¡¯s better to build your strength with weapons practice and footwork first. Also for such a large purchase please accept this complimentary item bag to hold it all in.¡± The blacksmith puts a small belt pouch on the pile of gear. ¡°That doesn¡¯t look big enough to hold any of this.¡± Sam comments. ¡°Don¡¯t worry its magic and can hold up to 10 item stacks. It¡¯ll increase in size if you level up various carrying skills. Hey blacksmith what¡¯s this blue glop?¡± Potato points to the dagger. The blacksmith walks over and looks at the dagger. ¡°WHAT? Those pests are here again. How can this be? I just had someone exterminate them an hour ago! They are always infesting fields, undermining buildings, destroying equipment. Whatever! You four do you want to get a special item? Just go into the sewers and exterminate every last blue slime you see. Make sure the little pests pay for ruining my beautiful equipment displays.¡± Chapter 3 - Sam and her Minions ¡°Wait let me put on my equipment, hey is there a changing room?¡± ¡°Of course missy.¡± The blacksmith leads her to a changing room. Sam looks over the gear and wonders how to put it all on. Looking up he notices the changing room has many how to guides on its walls. Follow the directions Sam puts the leather gear on over his clothes. Unlike most games the armor fully covers Sam¡¯s body, no unrealistic sexy gaps. Still it is a tight fitting black leather armor so the feminine body lines are still very noticeable. After the leather Sam puts on the metal breast plate. It¡¯s just a well-rounded upper chest plate with two cross straps in back. Then wears the cervelliere. Looking in the mirror Sam does a few sexy leather clad swordswoman poses. Walking out of the changing room the blacksmith looks Sam over then tightens a few straps. ¡°Don¡¯t want your armor to fall off in battle. Not a bad first time putting it on though.¡± Some of the tightened straps are around Sam¡¯s nether region. As Sam walks over to the rest of the party she is getting somewhat distracted by the sensations of leather straps digging into his female crotch. The three stooges¡¯ gaze at Sam as he walks towards them. Noticing this Sam sways her hips a bit more as she walks. Blushing Bowl walks outside and opens a wooden manhole cover. Carrot jumps into the hole, ¡°The glamorous places I take all the girls too.¡± Sam follows then pretends to slip on the sewer slime as he lands. Carrot grabs Sam¡¯s metal breastplate and lifts her back up. Blushing Carrot looks away. [Double kill.] Looking around the well-constructed sewer Sam again wonders at the design decisions that made this possible. A perfect hemisphere eight foot tall modern concrete sewer with lower central channel. Lighted with what looks like modern electrical lighting and continues far off into the distance. All this for a medieval village of maybe a hundred inhabitants. Once Potato and Bowl arrive Sam spots a blue slime. ¡°There¡¯s one!¡± Sam runs toward the blue slime making sure to ¡®accidently¡¯ hit Potato with her hip. Sam pauses close to Potato and brushes her leather gloved hand over his chest. ¡°Sorry.¡± She says. Potato mumbles, ¡°It it¡¯s al-alright.¡± [Multi kill and party wipe kukuku.] Drawing both his kriegsmesser and dagger Sam attacks the blue slime. Since she has no idea how to wield weapons she just repeatedly slashes with both weapons as fast as his stats will allow her. The blue slime is almost bisected after the first cut and within seconds is diced into many blue globs. ¡°That was fun! Oh there¡¯s another one.¡± Sam runs after another blue slime and repeats the attack. This time the first slash is instead blocked by a green bar. The green bar decreases until it¡¯s a much shorter length and turns red. The next attack shatters the bar and cuts into the blue slime. Several stabs later and the area is again splattered with blue slime bits. Several brutal blue slime murders later one finally gets a chance to attack. It jumps at Sam¡¯s breast but Sam knees it further up into the air before slicing it to pieces. Noticing a distinct lack of participation from her party members Sam looks to see what is going on. She sees Potato holding his side and wheezing as he runs to catch up. Carrot is doing better but seems at a loss of what to do. Finally Bowl just walks with his arms in his robes looking complacent. ¡°What¡¯s going on guys? Was I doing something wrong?¡± ¡°Nothing wrong babe. Those moves you used was hot!¡± ¡°Can¡¯t¡­ keep up¡­ How much¡­ Endurance¡­ do you¡­ have?¡± After Potato catches his breath. ¡°I¡¯ve never seen anyone fight that quickly and this is your first time in the game? What abilities are you using?¡± ¡°Abilities? I don¡¯t have any I just put all my start points into stats and swing as fast as I can at the slimes. Oh I also bought the Noble package too for more points.¡± Sam lies ¡°You must have gone full physical stats then. It explains all the damage, criticals, and continuous run speed you¡¯re getting. Otherwise you should¡¯ve run out of stamina or required a lot more hits to break the HP protection.¡± ¡°HP protection? Is that colored bar like thing that appears and blocks the attack?¡± Sam asks. ¡°Yeah as long as a mob has HP protection up all your attacks are blocked until it shatters. Once it¡¯s gone you can start hurting the mobs body. Players have the same effect. Unlike other games zero HP just means attacks work like in real life and make wounds. As long as it¡¯s up though you don¡¯t feel pain and don¡¯t get things like broken bones and amputated arms.¡± ¡°Not sure I understand. How about I watch you three fight a slime?¡± Sam does understand she just wants to compare how well she was doing to the three stooges¡¯ abilities. ¡°I¡¯ll show you my leet urban bow game!¡± Carrot cheers. Carrot takes careful aim at a nearby blue slime and misses. The reason for his miss is obvious. Carrot is holding his bow horizontally. The rest of the party is shocked into silence until Sam finally recovers and asks, ¡°Umm why are you holding the bow that way?¡± ¡°It¡¯s my gangsta style archery. I know I miss a lot now. But once the skill comes in I¡¯ll be superstar elf shooter.¡± At least Sam now knows why Carrot didn¡¯t shoot earlier, he was afraid he would hit her in the back. Several missed shots latter and one accidently hits the mob. It¡¯s now Potato¡¯s turn to fail. He winds up and then lunges toward the mob. Tripping on his own feet and falling face first into the sewage. As he climbs back to his feet a blue slime gloms on to his head covering everything but his mouth. ¡°Get it off. Get it off.¡± Potato screams as he runs around. Quickly Potato realizes the blue slime is now easier to hit and starts stabbing his daggers at his head to hurt the blue slime. Just as quickly Potato learns why it¡¯s a good idea to cut away from oneself as well. Some of the stabs hit the blue slime and some slide off and hit Potato¡¯s head. The narrative has been taken without authorization; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident. Each dagger stab that does hit the blue slime causes a very small decrease in its HP bar. A much larger decrease happens when the dagger stabs Potato¡¯s head. Bowl simply watches this calmly and heals Potato once his HP has decreased to half and turns yellow. One heal brings the HP bar back to full and its color turns green again. ¡°Can you cast buffs as well?¡± Sam asks. ¡°No.¡± Sam waits a bit to see if Bowl will elaborate but he doesn¡¯t. ¡°Can you learn buff spells?¡± ¡°Yes.¡± Waiting a bit more proves fruitless. ¡°Why haven¡¯t you learned them then?¡± ¡°Learned healing first. Finished yesterday.¡± ¡°Do you at least have another ability or attack?¡± ¡°None. Just healing.¡± Looking back at the fight Sam sees that the blue slime is finally dead. She also notices that Potato has a couple of arrows sticking out of his back armor as well. Sam realizes she has chosen her group poorly. ¡°Okay everyone new plan. You.¡± She points to Carrot. ¡°Will pull mobs. You¡¯ve seen those videos online of thugs walking up to unexpecting bystanders then hitting them in the back of the head? Pretty cool gangster like right?¡± Carrot nods. ¡°I want you to do that to the slimes then run back here for me to finish them off. Make sure to use the proper punch.¡± ¡°What¡¯s the proper punch?¡± Carrot asks ¡°Keep your body upright and hold your left arm across your chest as a guard. Then run at your target. When you are in range with an open palm and outstretched right arm rotate your upper body and strike with the palm or forearm.¡± Sam teaches Carrot a sissy clothes line slap. ¡°Bangin¡± ¡°You.¡± Pointing at Potato. ¡°Will loot the mobs. Give anything you can¡¯t hold to him.¡± She points at Bowl. ¡°We¡¯ll divide up everything at the end. You.¡± Pointing at Bowl. ¡°Heal and see if you can learn some buffs.¡± Bowl nods. ¡°How many of these do we need to kill?¡± She asks Potato. ¡°It varies, somewhere between 10 and 100 usually.¡± An hour and indeterminate amount of exterminated blue slimes later the party exits the sewer. Walking back into the blacksmiths Sam asks the blacksmith at the counter, ¡°I¡¯ve killed a lot of blue slimes is this enough to complete the quest?¡± ¡°Please show me your kill trophies.¡± ¡°Did we get anything like that?¡± Potato answers, ¡°Yep, there aren¡¯t any quest drop only items in game. It¡¯s all parts of the monster and all can be used as materials for crafting something. Everyone put the slime goo you have on the counter.¡± Several hundred blue slime goo of high quality are placed onto the counter. Between Potato¡¯s extra item drop abilities and blue slimes naturally dropping one to three per kill it really added up fast. Also Potato only took the highest quality drops. Even still the entire party had filled up every item slot during the blue slime massacre. ¡°This¡­ this is fantastic. Never before has a party been so thorough in their work. This deserves something extra!¡± The blacksmith looks very pleased as he heads to the back to get the rewards. ¡°Well, well another upgraded quest. Normally people solo this quest and do the minimum let¡¯s see what the upgraded item will be.¡± Potato comments Returning the blacksmith hands out four obsidian tablets. ¡°Here, normally I just give out basic magic stone tablets but you four get the limited edition black obsidian magic tablets, the slimesong magic BS7.¡± ¡°What is this?¡± Sam asks. Potato pulls out a dull grey stone tablet and put it next to the shiny black one then explains, ¡°It¡¯s basically the in game information window. You can use them to see your stats, skills, abilities, and anything else about your character. Also allows you to track quests you¡¯ve accepted.¡± After fiddling around with both tablets Potato continues, ¡°And the black tablet also has a monster guide, item guide, people guide, map, notes section, and magic camera analysis spell.¡± Potato holds it up and takes a picture of the blue slime goo. Then shows everyone the new blue slime goo entry in the item guide. He takes several more pictures of different pieces of blue slime goo until the item entry has 100% next to it. Apparently the first picture of something just lists its name but getting more gives a complete detailed description of the item. ¡°So what do we do with all this slime goo?¡± Sam wonders. ¡°We could sell it at the adventurer¡¯s guild but you get better prices at the specific crafter that uses it. Let¡¯s head to the mage shop next. Also could use it if you¡¯re going alchemist crafting. But it¡¯s better to hold off on crafting until you can have a steady supply of income to raise the skill.¡± Entering the mage shop Sam is unsurprised it looks like a modern bookstore. With a few extra shelves devoted to wands, potions, and other mage related items. Sam leaves the selling and dividing of the gold to Potato and looks around the shop. Opening a random book Sam sees nice modern print describing magic circle construction and uses. [I wonder if this game has the concept of copyright or information piracy?] Sam starts taking pictures of books. As this is a starter shop only the fundamentals are sold. And of course they have many copies of each book for the large number of low level players. A few moments later Sam has a new section in her tablet, book guide. Which has all the fundamental magic books in magical format. It doesn¡¯t even take up inventory space. Chapter 4 - Combat Style and The Handsome Enemy Sam heads back to the counter, ¡°So where to next?¡± Potato hands Sam her cut of the loot sales then asks, ¡°Weren¡¯t we going to buy you some mage start books?¡± ¡°Nah, decided to do something else.¡± Potato takes a moment to think, ¡°Well I suppose next is to head around town and to collect the uncommon hidden quests then grind completion of them and the sword skill quest you have.¡± ¡°How about you three go collect the quests and share them with me then. I¡¯ll start grinding on the adventurer quests first then we can meet back up to continue questing.¡± From reading forum posts Sam knows the developers made all but some of the hidden rare quests repeatable and sharable. The party minions look like they want to say something but before they can Sam exits the building quickly and heads back outside the village. Checking her quest status on weapon usage she sees she has swung the kriegsmesser 728/1000 and the dagger 692/1000 times. She decides to switch weapons to the zweihander and buckler. Sam wants to use both the buckler and zweihander at the same time but finds holding the large two hander one handed very awkward. It can be done but a couple practice swings of the zweihander throws her off balance and is slow. The quest doesn¡¯t say anything about proper technique though. Sam decides to try gripping the zweihander by the blade and using the handle as a poke stick. A few pokes and Sam sees the quest weapon usage goes up. A horned rabbit hops into view. Charging, Sam hits the horned rabbit with both the buckler and zweihander pommel. The damage is around a quarter of what she was doing with the kriegsmesser but she doesn¡¯t care as it still increases the usage count. She punches with the buckler again but misses because of her lack of skill. The horned rabbit¡¯s eyes briefly glow before it counters with a tackle that knocks Sam on her butt. Letting out an ominous shriek the horned rabbit pounces at her. Sam is just barely able to get her forearm up in time to deflect the horned rabbits attack. Or so she thinks. Instead of a deflected attack the horned rabbit is gutted as the blade of the zweihander is between her forearm and the fast moving horned rabbit. Standing up Sam considers what happened. The horned rabbits tackle was far more powerful than she was expecting both reducing her HP by a third and knocking her down. Then when she was able to counter the horned rabbits pounce it died even though it still had most of its HP bar left. To kept the game realistic there were no damage numbers displayed. Although the fact there was the HP bar sort of defeated this. Still it meant players had to guess how effective an attack was. Having defeated many a blue slime Sam knows that some attacks will do significantly more damage than others. Sam wonders if it is due to just some random critical chance or if there are other unknown factors involved. Walking up to another horned rabbit Sam hits it once with the zweihander pommel then waits. Predictably the horned rabbit charges and Sam blocks with the buckler. No damage is done to either Sam or the horned rabbit. Sam again waits for the next charge but this time lets the horned rabbit hit her. She takes about tenth of her HP in damage. A bit more waiting and the horned rabbit charges again. This time Sam doesn¡¯t just block the attack but instead punches with the buckler. Unable to dodge the horned rabbit is bashed on the head. It falls to the ground taking about a fifth of its HP in damage. The horned rabbit flops about a bit then rights itself and shakes its head. Sam wonders if that was a stun as the horned rabbit wasn¡¯t really doing much for a couple seconds. Once the horned rabbit has recovered Sam makes a come at me motion with her hand. However the horned rabbit seems reluctant to make another attack. Sam forces the engagement by punching with the buckler and intentionally misses. The horned rabbit¡¯s eyes glow at this feint and it crouches to attack. Ready for the attack Sam quickly parries the charge with her bladed forearm. The horned rabbit is split in two covering her in a spray of blood. Sam is not sure but thinks the parry may have done more damage than the first horned rabbits death. So counter attacking in the middle of an enemy attack or after an enemy fails an attack seems to cause more damage. Possibly also adding addition effects like stun, knockdown and interruption she thinks. This mostly confirms what she has read about in the forums. The forums also mention location hit matters as well. Attacks targeting the head and torso do more damage while attacks on limbs less so. She decides to continue to try for counter attacks in the next horned rabbit fight. She charges at the new target but stumbles barely grazing the horned rabbit. The horned rabbit takes advantage of this and with glowing eyes counter attacks knocking Sam down. Unlike the first two fights Sam mistimes the parry and the horned rabbit shatters her HP bar and impacts her head. Feeling pain for the first time in the game Sam is unprepared. She moves her hand to hold her forehead without thinking. Shrieking the horned rabbit jumps on top of her. Luckily she held on to the buckler and is able to block the rabbits finishing move just barely. But now she¡¯s holding off the drooling shrieking horned rabbit just inches from her face with the buckler. [How¡¯d this turn into a horror film? With a cute little horned rabbit no less.] She struggles with the headache pain and horned rabbit trying to bite her face off. Soon she is able to get enough leverage to start pushing the viciously cute thing away. A great sword cleaves the horned rabbit in two. ¡°Are you alright my fair lady?¡± Surprised she looks toward the voice she sees a tall, broad shouldered, half-elf in shining white plate armor. Her heart beats faster as she looks at the handsome noble. His rugged face with manly blond locks are right out of a romance novel cover art. He reaches out his hand to help her up and Sam put¡¯s her hand daintily into his. Helping her up he hugs her a bit too closely before distancing himself a bit. Sam starts to blush. [¡­ What the hell is wrong with me? I don¡¯t even like men.] Sam wonders if the horned rabbit hit her too hard in the head. [Her? Wait, when did I start thinking of myself as a woman?] Sam shakes her head trying to clear it. [I¡¯m a he! I like women. The game helmet must be influencing my emotions.] Shyly looking at him again she starts to feel heat spreading from her face to the rest of her body. [Bad digital body, no sexy time with men! He must be at least noble level and max appearance. Riajuu go explode.] ¡°Beautiful lady may I have the honor of knowing your name?¡± ¡°I¡¯m Sam¡­ Samantha I mean.¡± ¡°A pleasure to meet you Samantha. I¡¯m prince Lorric.¡± He must be rich if he purchased monarch rank. Rich, tall, handsome and helping others in distress. He¡¯s so perfect Samantha thinks dreamily. [Stop that. My name is Sam. He¡¯s not Mr. Perfect. Ack, who cares if he is? I. Don¡¯t. Do. Men. No way is this a normal reaction to even a 25 appearance stat. He must have gotten some trait to make women desire him more.] ¡°It would be my honor to help you out with your questing. No harm shall befall you while you¡¯re with me.¡± [That line¡­ And he rescued me from a dangerous situation¡­ No. No. No. No. No. I am not the damsel in distress.] Sam is horrified by the current turn of events. No matter how she tries to decline Prince Perfect she¡¯s trapped with a damsel in distress flag. If she gets angry then she¡¯s just a feisty girl that wants to be tamed. If she acts cold then she¡¯s the ice queen that wants to be warmed up. If she runs she¡¯s the shy girl that wants to be caught. Only way to stop the advances is to kill Prince Perfect right now and make it hurt, a lot. But Prince Perfect has way better gear and HP. So attacking and losing to the handsome hero will just make her the villainess who secretly wants to be captured by PP¡¯s charms. Sam starts breathing heavily as she feels trapped and completely helpless in this situation. [Just kidding.] ¡°I¡¯m sorry I can¡¯t group with you. I already have a full party with three others who should be here shortly. Besides I must get stronger on my own if I¡¯m able to fulfill my vows.¡± Stolen content warning: this content belongs on Royal Road. Report any occurrences. ¡°I see, perhaps in the future we shall quest together. Well until we meet again fair lady.¡± Prince Perfect does a sword salute and walks away. Saved by the duty bound noble guardswoman route. This doesn¡¯t stop the damsel in distress flag but forces one to appeal to the woman¡¯s sense of duty to win her heart. Only way to do that is group and quest together showing the girl how noble and chivalrous he is. He could also save her several more times without a grouping but either way it diverts the problem until later. Hopefully until after Sam has logged out and created a different male character to play with. After a short rest to recover her HP Sam begins hunting horned rabbits again. This time focusing more on not being hit then on perfect counter attacks to prevent a repeat of her previous defeat. A few dead horned rabbits later her three party minions show up. ¡°Collected all the quests babe. And who¡¯s the creep with eyes on you?¡± Carrot asks pointing at Price Perfect who¡¯s still pretending to kill horned rabbits while looking at Sam occasionally waiting for an opportunity to rescue her again. ¡°Ignore him he¡¯ll go away shortly now that you three are here.¡± The party minions look happier at Sam¡¯s words. ¡°Carrot you¡¯ve heard of curb stomping before right? Do you know how to do it correctly without a curb?¡± Sam asks. ¡°Of¡­ of course I do! Err just for reference how have you seen it done?¡± ¡°Well just go up to a mob and kick it hard in the shin so it falls and hits it head on the virtual curb. Of course it won¡¯t do this at first so it¡¯s best to raise your skill by kicking it in the shin then running away back to me to finish it off.¡± ¡°Dat sounds Dope.¡± Sam grins to herself for teaching Carrot another sissy move. Addressing Potato, ¡°Focus on getting the loot and gathering quests. With your extra loot drops and gathering skills it should be very efficient. Also since you know the quests the best can you turn them in for the rest of us?¡± ¡°Of course.¡± Sam is sure Potato will skim off some of the loot but as long as he leaves enough for the quest completes it should be fine. Now with Bowl here Sam can go all out on attacking the mobs without worry. Although when Sam makes her new character none of the skills will transfer she should still be able to remember the timing of the attacks. So she focuses on counter attack timing and critical hit locations for practice. The next hour and team Sam¡¯s NGO is able to complete 17 quests, 5 of which are upgraded due to speed of completion, quality of drops and quantity gathered. Most importantly Sam¡¯s first quest in Kunst des Fechtens is done. Headed back to the guardhouse Sam walks up to the instructor to turn in the quest. ¡°I¡¯ve completed the first step of my training. What is the next part Sensei?¡± Sam is barely able to hold in a giggle calling a German fighting instructor by a Japanese term but figures it¡¯s probably the correct term since the place is a bizarre mix up of several cultures. The instructor look happy at the term, ¡°Hmm not only do you show proper respect but you have outdone yourself. I see you¡¯ve already started to use intermediate techniques on your own. Using kurzes schwert and counter schild to good effect in your battles.¡± ¡°I have?¡± ¡°Haha yes, you may not know the specifics but felt some of the core tenants of the style. Kurzes schwert, or half-sword, is a technique of gripping the blade to do additional techniques the enemy won¡¯t be expecting. Offensive use of a shield is another intermediate technique. Most beginners think a shield is passive but you¡¯ve grasped that it just another style of weapon to learn. Even better you¡¯ve been trying for counter attacks and causing weaknesses in the enemies¡¯ defense with feints.¡± Grinning the instructor continues, ¡°Normally for the next part I¡¯d have you train here in the dojo. At least ten thousand swings on each technique. But you seem one who will naturally learn and gain more from actual combat experience. Still it is not good to skip out on the basics. I have three quests for your next training. The first is to correctly use each of the basic techniques ten thousand times. Mind you an improper swing won¡¯t count only the correct form will do. Next is to start a battle 100 times in each of the four basic stances. Ochs or Ox in common tongue, Pflug or plow, Alber or fool, and Vom Tag or Roof. Using a stance can greatly improve several aspects of your fighting. The mid stance of plow is a good balance of both offense and defense. The low stance of the fool greatly benefits defense and allows for surprise attack type strikes. The high stance of roof allows for the most destructive of strikes and is good for offense. Last the Ox fills the role of special usage stance allowing for a variety of specialized utility strikes to be used. Finally footwork is very important to combat. For a thousand times each do the passing step to dodge, closing step to parry, false step for blocking and assault step for attacking.¡± ¡°That is a lot to do all at once¡­¡± The instructor takes out a book and hands it to Sam, ¡°Not to worry here¡¯s a book detailing out how to do each of them. I have confidence you¡¯ll find the best path to learn them all correctly. Oh you may also start calling yourself a swordsman. You still have far to go but you have started on your path.¡± Sam sees she now has level 1 in swordsman job. She looks at the details of the job on her magic tablet. Swordsman gives an extra 10% damage per job level to swords as its active bonus. The leveling bonus gives +4 to strength, +2 to endurance, +2 to grace and two times speed to learn sword skills. The passive bonus gives 5% increase in dodge skill per level. Jobs are similar to other games classes but a bit different as well. It generally takes a quest to get to level 1 at any job. And all jobs have a passive skill that gets applied based on its level. Only one job can be active at first but later more can be active as the character gains more total levels. A job can only gain experience when it¡¯s active and the active bonus is only applied then. Specific actions level the job based on what it is. So for swordsman any actions involving sword usage or battle will level the job. But for a blacksmith it would instead be hammer swings and crafting blacksmithing goods to level it. Most jobs also improve some aspect of growth. So swordsmen job also makes learning sword skills easier and the bonus to stats counts as a base stat increase allowing for more rapid growth in the listed stats. Looking at other jobs she has access to she sees peasant, adventurer, noble, princess, and . Normally one starts with jobs based on package bought. So most start with just adventurer and peasant. Since Sam cheated she has the noble and princess as well but the error job is odd. It must be from the divine rank but with no developer support must be corrupted. Which job is active can be switched after five minutes of waiting. So technically one could switch jobs in combat but normally most people do it in down times between and don¡¯t switch jobs often as no skills can be used in those five minutes. Sam had been using the default peasant job and it is now level 3 from helping villagers by completing their quests. Probably not the optimum path since peasant job doesn¡¯t provide any bonuses. Some other jobs do require a certain level of peasant as a prerequisite so it¡¯s not a total loss. However she should use a job with better bonuses so she switches her job to swordsman and spends the five minutes reading her sword manual. She continues to quest with her party for several hours more until it starts getting too dark to see. They¡¯ve completed most of the start area quests at least once and repeated many of them as well for additional rewards. Sam is almost sad to say goodbye to her party. They had non-existent combat skills but made up for it by being obedient and having some beneficial abilities outside of combat. The three stooges had reached their game time limits and logged off. Sam still had a couple hours left before being forced to log out and decided to spend them in some, personal exploration. Perhaps try to further hack the system. However she has not heard of and has not seen any bugs in the game. Very odd considering how new and revolutionary the technology is. A massive multi-circle glowing structure stretching across the sky. Covered in giant cryptic runes, inter woven circles, slowly turning and glowing an ominous blue circle looms overhead. She guesses it¡¯s a huge magic circle but has no idea what it is for. She also notices it¡¯s not morning but still night time. The magic circle is putting out enough light to mimic predawn. After staring for a few moments Sam looks around to see what other players are doing. Most are just staring at the magical circle but a few are chatting or obviously just waiting around for something to happen. Sam walks over to one group chatting and asks, ¡°I just logged on and saw the magical sky circle. Do any of you have any idea what is going on?¡± ¡°No idea. It appeared a while ago and other than looking impressive hasn¡¯t done much. Figured it for some in game event that is about to happen.¡± One says. Another one, ¡°This is so exciting. So far there have just been static quests. Everyone has been looking forward to first server wide events.¡± ¡°Server wide events? Has there been an announcement?¡± Sam asks. ¡°No. No announcement that I know about but every game has big server wide events to draw people in right?¡± ¡°Where¡¯d all the NPC¡¯s go?¡± Sam again asks. ¡°NPC¡¯s?¡± ¡°Look around I don¡¯t see any.¡± Sam says. ¡°That¡¯s odd, didn¡¯t even know they disappeared. With the sky thing going on.¡± On a hunch Sam asks, ¡°Have you tried logging out?¡± ¡°No, why would I?¡± ¡°Can you try to just access the system menu please?¡± ¡°Sure. Don¡¯t know why you can¡¯t just try yourself. But¡­ what the hell?¡± The other user tries the system access motion a couple times. Each time getting more panicked. ¡°What the hell is going on? Just the players, game world and giant sky magic circle are left. Being well read Sam is pretty sure this is trapped in game and it becomes death game like scenario. Well if one considers reading manga and web novels as well read at any rate. Even if she is wrong she thinks it best to try to get out of the game any way she can. She had hoped it might cause a game crash or forced log out. In fact this is the very reason she didn¡¯t try equipping it as she wanted to remain anonymous and causing the game server to crash is a great way to not do that. Regardless she needs a way out of this potential death game. She likes living and even in games never chooses the ironman mode. More opting for save scumming to get 100% completion rates or at least the most optimal paths through games. Yes death game really is the opposite of things she wants to do. Think brain think. In a game. On a hacked character account. Which uses lucid dreams. Which she couldn¡¯t log out yesterday because of her own lucid dream. Wait she is still in her own lucid dream. That means she might still have some control. She remembers back to her preteen years. She use to have horrid night terrors. She eventually found a way to autosuggest to herself a trigger to wake up before a night terror happened. Often in dreams certain objects don¡¯t work like they do in real life. Try to read a book it¡¯s all garbled. Flick a light switch and no lights come on. Try a door it doesn¡¯t open or opens the wrong way. Using a light switch she made it so it always appeared in her dreams. If the lights worked then it was a normal dream and she could stay a sleep. If she flicked the switch and the lights didn¡¯t come on she knew a nightmare or worse was next so she would force herself to wake. She wakes up with no nightmare experienced then can go right back to sleep. Sam has used it hundreds of times since then and it always wakes her up instantly. She has never experienced a nightmare or night terror since then either. Maybe she can use it to get out of this real life nightmare. Looking up Sam notices the magic circle has changed while she was thinking of a way out of this game. The circle is brighter and something is happening in the middle of it. A thin blue line goes from one inner edge of the circle to the other inner edge. After it bisects the circles it opens like a giant cat¡¯s iris. Inside is blackness. No there are some kind of lights in there. Almost like looking at space on a very dark night. However the lights are not stars. Similar but also different. Sam can¡¯t really understand how they are different but on some instinctual level knows those lights are alive and watching the players on the ground. Quickly finding a wooden board she uses her dagger to carve a 5¡±x 3¡± vertical rectangle. Then carves a 1¡± x .5¡± smaller rectangle on the inside. She pops out the internal rectangle and puts it back into the hole it just came from at a 45 degree angle. One poorly crafted light switch made. Since no light should turn on when used it should mimic her wake up trigger. She focuses on waking up. On not wanting to be in this dream anymore. Flick. The world around her blurs a bit. She notices the living lights in the circle are done just watching. They begin to extend an uncountable number of blue lines from them towards the ground. Flick. The world again blurs and fades a bit this time. The blue lines extend toward the ground and start chasing people. Somehow the players unconsciously know they don¡¯t want to be touched by them and run away. Flick. The world fades completely for a moment before coming back into focus. Its working she thinks. Several people fail at avoiding the blue lines and scream in agony as they are touched by them before disappearing. Sam notices a blue line headed for her. Flick. The world fades and she can make out a helmet and her rooms ceiling before the game world fades back in. The blue line is about to touch her. Flick. The game world again fades but this time she hears something. ~Aww don¡¯t leave we were just getting to the good part. Besides you know you liked it as much as I did~ [What the hell] ~Tee-hee~ the game world fades back in and Sam is hit by the blue line of light. Chapter 7 - Tutorial Over Sam hears a women¡¯s agonizing scream. Then realizes that she is the one screaming. Or at least was. After the light hit her she was enveloped in blue light and she felt her entire body being torn apart. Even the most hardened action girl would scream at that. After a brief moment the pain was gone. However her scream continued to linger for several more seconds before slowly fading into silence. The blue light surrounding her has dimmed a bit and in front of her seems to be a long thin line pulling her somewhere. At least she thinks she¡¯s moving, there aren¡¯t any visual cues around to confirm this. Other than the blue light there is only darkness around her. Not one to allow herself to be lead toward some unknown and possibly horrible destination Sam tries to resist the blue light but to no avail as she can¡¯t move. This seems eerily like the start of a night terror with no sound and unable to move. [Tank, we''re going to need a light switch soon.] Sadly no light switch and no Nebuchadnezzar appear to Sam¡¯s unspoken thoughts. Great unable to wake up from the growing nightmare and not really sure if this is reality or a dream. [Also who was that mysterious voice that prevented me from waking up and why can I feel pain in a lucid dream?] Sam really didn¡¯t think that much about it while playing the game but if it was just a glorified dream then players should never have been able to feel pain. And with her dream within a dream hack this should be doubly true for her. Not much time passes for her to think more on her situation before she sees something approaching her from up ahead. Quickly growing in size is a planet. Looks like the pictures Sam has seen of Earth from the moon. As it grows in size she sees that the planet is definitely not Earth. Oh the oceans are blue, the continents a combination of greens and browns, and the clouds are still white. However the continent shapes are all different. She doesn¡¯t get much of a chance to see how they are different before being pulled quickly toward one of continents. Her speed seems to drop a great deal once she passes through some clouds and now she can see she is headed toward a place situated between a mountain range and a coastline. As she gets closer to the ground she can tell she is headed toward a city built along a large river. The final moments before hitting the ground she notices the cities buildings are not skyscrapers but seem to be built out of stone a few stories high. The one she is being pulled towards seemed to be one of the tallest in the city. Even though she knows that her trip has defied all laws of physics she can¡¯t help but put her arms around her head before she impacts the building. The sudden stoppage of motion and inrushing of sound and light stun Sam for several moments. She can hear many voices all excitedly talking at once. ¡°Silence! Silence I say!¡± One keeps shouting. As the crowd of voices quiet down she now hears several groans from beside her. Blinking her eyes rapidly she tries to look around her. Several dozen people are laying on the ground groaning. They are all wearing fantasy like clothing, so perhaps all of them are players from the game Sam thinks. Rising to a kneeling position Sam is overcome by vertigo and it¡¯s all she can do to keep from vomiting. Continuing to look around though she sees what looks like a very large magical circle surrounding the players. Further out is another circle with around thirty collapsed people on it. All of them are wearing robes of various colors and are being attended to by young teens in robes. Looking closer it gives the feeling of aged masters being attended to by apprentices. Finally a ring of guards in armor and people in fancy looking dress quieting talking to each other. Not sure at the number Sam guesses a hundred or maybe two hundred of them. Attempting to stand Sam feels uneasy and kneels again. Nothing seems right. Her body is not responding at all like she is used to. Two arms, two legs, it¡¯s all there but feels like she is in someone else¡¯s body. Looking down she can see the armor she was wearing in game and is obviously still in her female game body. However while in game she could move like normal even though her real life and game bodies were very different. Now it feels like she is truly in a different body than before. Giving up she raises her head and looks at the building she is in. Looks like a cathedral with a stone ceiling far overhead and pillars all around in a massive circular room dozens of meters wide. Tall thin windows are along the walls between pillars. Seems mostly unadorned with sculptures or paintings but the ceiling has a big painting with seven segments each depicting different beings. By now many of the players have recovered enough to be sitting and some are even starting to stand up. A voice booms out, ¡°Welcome Heroes! We know the summoning must have been difficult but the effects will pass. Know that each of you has a special power that can greatly aid this kingdom in its time of need.¡± Looking at the voice Sam sees a stout human wearing a crown and regal looking robes. He looks perhaps forty years in age and has a short beard. He continues to talk as he walks towards the summoning circle. ¡°We are sure all of this is very confusing to you but we assure you all your questions will be answered in time. Accept these gifts of the kingdom in return for being summoned. These magic items will aid you in recovering from the summons effects and help you in the future as well.¡± Several young pages move among the players handing out necklaces to the women and bracers to the men. A page walks up to Sam and tries to put a necklace on her. [No way in hell am I putting that on.] Sam takes the necklace from the page and puts it into her item storage bag. The page seems confused for a bit before backing away. Most of the other players seemed too dazed and just let the pages put the items on them. ¡°We shall guess at some of the questions you all have. We are his majesty Philip III of the Von Clausewitz Dynasty. We are currently in the capital city of Breslaure in the Kingdom of Kalgren. As for being able to understand us this is a gift from the summoning.¡± ¡°The summoning has also healed all wounds, cured all diseases, increased your natural abilities and unlocked your hidden potentials. The dreams you have been having these last few months have been from the summoning. After all it would be unjust to forcefully bring others to a world they know nothing about.¡± ¡°It would also be unjust to bring those that are powerless such the requirements were to have a certain level of power. Only those with power and who sought to be in this world night after night were chosen as the heroes that can save this world from the demon king and his armies.¡± As the king says that a quest accept window pops up in front of Sam. ¡®Save the World!¡¯ Legendary Fate (SSS rank) Defeat the demon king and stop his plans to destroy the world. Quest failure: Will cause everyone to die. Time limit: Before the demon king is unsealed and his plans come to fruition. Reward: Divine boon points and reputation gains with all people based on how much your actions contributed to the demon kings downfall. Do you accept? No. The window closes then reopens, do you accept? Sam chooses No again. Reopening again this time the quest swapped the Yes and No buttons but Sam notices this and chooses No again. Reopening a final time there is only the Yes option to choose. Sam refuses to push it and after 15 seconds gets the message: Quest changed to ¡®Save the World¡­ (Reluctant Hero)¡¯ Quest auto-accepted on your behalf. Sighing Sam thinks to herself so the VR game was some bizarre interaction between this world¡¯s magic and the other world¡¯s technology. That raises a lot of questions regarding where the helmet came from, was there a game company or was it some sort of mass delusion. Sam wonders if she will ever know the answers to them. It does at least explain some of the weirdness and brutal game play. Still the comment about those with power being chosen bugged her. As far as saving the world goes people are about the same in abilities. Which is to say none. No one is born with a special world saving ability. The only thing in game about power differences was the subscription level purchased. The more money spent the more start bonus points one had and the more powerful they were. From a certain view point magic and money could be equivalent in both have the ability to shape the world around the person with a lot of it. So where does all that leave her she wonders. In a body she wasn¡¯t born with and divine level powers she didn¡¯t buy. The King drones on about how great being a hero is and how needed their services are. As the other players recover they start whispering to each other. ¡°Is this part of the game?¡± ¡°I can still access the menu but there is no log out.¡± ¡°He said we were summoned, does this mean I can get slaves?¡± ¡°I want to go home.¡± ¡°I didn¡¯t agree to this. Can he send us home?¡± Quickly a lot of the player talk turns to wanting out of this and returning home. Several even start crying. The king notices his motivating speech doesn¡¯t seem to be having the intended effect and pauses. Seeing his chance a young heroic looking player walks forward and asks, ¡°Can you send us home?¡± Considering the question a few moments before answering the king replies. ¡°At this time that is not possible. Our resources are devoted to winning this war and we do not yet have the means to freely travel between worlds. After the war is won we will gladly devote time to finding a way to return those who wish to return. But we can see the summoning has left our heroes out of sorts and think it best to allow everyone to rest.¡± With that the king waves some men forward. They are somewhat non-descript. The clothes are nice but not fancy, they are not fat but also not thin, of average height and looks. Interestingly enough as they walk none of their footfalls happen at the same time. Almost like they are intentionally staying out of step with one another. ¡°These men have been selected to be your guides. They will answer your questions and provide for your needs.¡± The king turns and walks towards the group of nobles. Each of the guides selects four people and walks towards the main entrance of the hall. As this is going on the nobles talking towards each other raises in volume again. Sam can make out just a few snippets from the nobles conversation. ¡°don¡¯t agree¡±, ¡°want that one¡±, ¡°their eyes are odd¡±, ¡°don¡¯t seem heroic¡± The last two she can understand. Having summoned heroes to save the day break down crying because they can¡¯t go home is not a very heroic image. The narrative has been taken without permission. Report any sightings. As for the odd eyes that can be explained by the ethnicities summoned. All of this world¡¯s inhabitants she¡¯s seen so far are human and look to be of Western European descent. However most of those summoned are Asian. About equal between Korean, Japanese, Chinese because of their love of games or large population made up around two thirds of the game¡¯s player base. The other third is made up of English speaking countries and Europe. With the price of the game helmet she doubts there are few if any from the poorest areas of Earth, except perhaps some of the very wealthy in those areas. Considering the game had each player start area local to country of residence. This implies the summoning happened game wide if it¡¯s reflecting the games ethnic percentages and not the local start area she began in. Since the game had millions of players she wonders just how many were summoned and where they went as there are not more than 50 or so players currently here. Her musing are interrupted by a hand grasping her upper arm. ¡°Come on now let¡¯s get you to your room.¡± She tries to stand but stumbles a bit. ¡°Seems the summoning affected you worse than the others.¡± The guide comments. ¡°Here put your arm around my neck and I¡¯ll help you walk.¡± Seeing no reason not too Sam puts her arm around his neck and he lifts her up. He also puts his arm around her waist to steady her walking as they move towards the main entrance. If she needed further evidence this was not the game the places where he is touching are normally only possible to touch with all safeties off. As they walk out of the building Sam notices the sun is setting. She also hears soft weeping behind her. Glancing back she sees three very pretty girls. Two look like Japanese idols and are holding each other as they cry. The third is busty redhead with freckles and, although not crying, does not look emotionally well. Sam wonders at her own lack of emotions. Maybe she feels that way because she feels disassociated from everything. With her body not feeling like her own everything has a distant surreal quality to it for her. She supposes some might think being summoned to another world is fun or exciting. But the reality of it is more akin to kidnapping. No worse, like being conscripted by a foreign nation to fight a losing war. After all summoning heroes seems to always be the last resort to fight a nigh unstoppable enemy. With no way home that makes this a fight or be killed situation. Yey an indirect death game scenario. As the five of them near a grey squat stone building Sam starts to find her balance in this new body and can mostly walk on her own. A bit further in the guide stops by a door. ¡°Here¡¯s your room. As all of you are an important resource there will always be a guard outside your door. That will be me during the day and one of my colleagues at night. If you need anything you can ask me and I¡¯ll see what I can do. Don¡¯t leave without a guard as these are dangerous times for all of us.¡± One of the Japanese girls asks, ¡°What will happen to us?¡± ¡°Over the next few weeks you¡¯ll be trained in your new jobs and become accustomed to this world.¡± ¡°I had a friend who was in the game. He was an elf. Was he summoned as well?¡± Sam asks. ¡°Game? Well if you mean the summoning dream then yes he was likely summoned. Only those that meet the qualifications could see the dream and most of those would¡¯ve been summoned. Being a different race means he would have been summoned by the elves as they are the best able to guide their own kind.¡± He opens the door to their room and the four girl enter before he shuts the door. Sam sees four beds, two large dressers and two desks with lamps in the room. There is not much extra space but she guesses it is well furnished for a conscripted heroes¡¯ room. Choosing a bed at random Sam goes to sit down on it. ¡°Let¡¯s introduce ourselves. My name is Samantha, call me Sam. I¡¯m 21 years old from the United States and I bought the noble package of the game.¡± Sam lies since the truth wouldn¡¯t make sense to them. ¡°I''m Kate, from Ireland, aged 19 and also bought the noble package.¡± ¡°Nice to meet you. I am Mitsuya Rinko. I am from Japan. Age 18 my parents bought me the noble package.¡± ¡°Nice to meet you. I am Hishikawa Momoko. I am from Japan. Age 18 and Rin¡¯s parents bought me the noble package.¡± ¡°Oh you¡¯re friends then?¡± ¡°Yes.¡± both say ¡°We were both just accepted into Tokyo University and my parents bought us this game as a congratulations present.¡± Mitsuya Rinko says. Although the words are translated to English Sam can tell the two Japanese girls are being very formal. She thinks it would be good for them to open up a bit and says, ¡°Are you two okay with me calling you by your given names? Sound like we¡¯ll be living and learning together for the next few weeks so let¡¯s be friends.¡± They look at each other before Rinko says, ¡°We¡¯d like that. Kate please calls us that way as well.¡± Sam pulls out the necklace and takes a picture of it with her magic tablet. ¡°Hey what¡¯s that?¡± Kate asks. ¡°An identification item. I¡¯m curious what the abilities of these necklaces are. Kate can you take off your necklace so I can analyze it as well?¡± ¡°Why? It¡¯s mine. I¡¯m not going to take it off for you.¡± Sam notices the sudden change in personality then asks Rinko and Momoko, ¡°Do you mind taking off your necklaces so I can get a closer look at them?¡± ¡°Why should we?¡± and ¡°You¡¯re just a greedy American.¡± ¡°Sorry I was just dazzled by their beautiful design, I won¡¯t ask again. What were your classes in game?¡± The three calm down and then start talking like nothing happened. As they do Sam reads the item entry. Unfortunately it just has a name ¡®Heroine of Kalgren Necklace¡¯ and 10% complete. But with the reactions of her roommates she is sure it has more sinister abilities then a normal magic item. ¡°We were both druids.¡± The Japanese girls share. ¡°Was trying for fire mage.¡± Kate says. ¡°I just become a swordsman.¡± from Sam. The girls continue to talk about their game experiences with a few comments from Sam. However Sam continues to focus on how to get out of this place. She makes the menu access gesture and for the first time the menu appears. Only this menu seems cruder then the ones in game and is missing some of the options. The menu reminds her of the original 8-bit menus of early RPG¡¯s. It¡¯s also missing the game settings and log out buttons. It still has friends list, party settings, and unlike the game a quests and character stats. Where the real money shop button was now says divine boon shop but it¡¯s greyed out and doesn¡¯t work. Sam compares the information in the character stats menu to what she sees in her magic tablet. It¡¯s the same but the menu just lists out stat name and number with no description. Likewise the title and jobs are just a list with no descriptions. Looking at the quests section the menu just has quest name and percentage complete. The tablet details out area, has extra notes and subparts of the quest completed. Sam is also surprised to see several quests she did not have before. She was just expecting to see her swordsman training and save the world quests. ¡®Greater Heights of Pleasure¡¯ (Common) (Rank F for fun) Experience several orgasms in a row, bonus divine boon points if done with multiple partners. Chastity 76% Actions: Still a virgin, only partied with other virgins, avoids impure thoughts (sex with men), avoid impure touches (tried to avoid blue tentacles of light), wears body covering clothes, didn¡¯t have sexual thoughts when man had arm around waist. Lust 46% Actions: Teases men, lies to men, uses men for own gains, impure thoughts (lusty looks at women), impure touches (pleasured self), wears sexy clothing, walks sexily, had a man¡¯s arm around waist. Hey those are insulting! They also seem to be stretching to apply actions to either side. She gets the feeling the Divine and Demons are fighting for which side will get her powers. As she¡¯d rather avoid being a part of either side in a good versus evil war she doesn¡¯t like this. Although she doesn¡¯t want the world to end she also doesn¡¯t want to be chaste the rest of her life. Final battles between good and evil never seem to turn out well either. Usually ending up in everyone dying, world ends, happiness leaving the world, and lots of martyrs even on the winning side. First things first though, getting out of this heroic army. She accidentally touches the magic tablet to the menu as she goes to close the menu. The tablet goes through the menu without issue. However the menu flickers and a progress bar appears with the words updating¡­ The tablet also has the updating progress bar. After a minute both finish and the menu closes and reopens again. This time the menu is much better looking and has the same information that the tablet had. It also gained the abilities of the tablet to take pictures and display the various guides. On a hunch she touches her magic item bag to the menu and after another update bar is rewarded with another menu button called Inventory. Yey for unified UI Sam thinks. Sam decides her first course of action should be to break her necklace then wear it. That way she won¡¯t be so obviously not under the kingdoms control. She¡¯ll wait till her roommates are a sleep before doing so as she has no idea what their reactions will be. This doesn¡¯t take long as the summoning and emotions felt have taken their toll on the young women. Deciding to go to bed they all undress much to Sam¡¯s enjoyment. However she doesn¡¯t want to be hated so mostly focuses on just removing her armor and putting it into her magic item bag. As she waits for the young women¡¯s breathing to slow Sam unintentionally slips into sleep herself. After all she was already tired and didn¡¯t get much sleep before being summoned. Chapter 8 - Insanely Hard Mode Selected. She wakes to complete darkness and feels a presence near her. She punches as hard as she can at the unseen presence and is rewarded with an hp bar flickering. Throwing off the covers and jumping out of bed she continues to attack. But being only able to make out a vague shadow is unable to land any decisive hits, however she does cause her assailants hp to go into the yellow. The shadow also begins to grapple with her for a few moments before Sam feels cold metal around her neck and a locking noise. ¡°Stop slave.¡± A male voice from behind directs her. Sam instantly stops moving. ¡°Took you long enough.¡± A male voice from in front of her response. ¡°Hey! What is going on! ¡± Kate says waking up. ¡°You¡¯re just having a bad dream, go back to sleep.¡± The male voice commands again. ¡°I¡¯m having a bad dream, oh well back to bed.¡± Kate and the other young women quiet down and go back to sleep. ¡°Follow me slave.¡± The man says before opening the door and leaving the room. Sam follows him out. Once outside Sam can see the two men are part of the guides although she hasn¡¯t see them before. ¡°She hits hard.¡± One of the guides gasps for breath. ¡°Why do you think we have so many controls over them? If they get loose they will be worse than the demons. The other Kingdoms are insane for just trusting them without extra security.¡± ¡°Well if they are that dangerous why do we mess around with the suggestion necklaces and bracers? Why not just use slave collars for them. No freewill, no problems.¡± [Actually I do have freewill. I just can¡¯t move. Really need to find a freedom of movement belt for how often this happens.] ¡°Because no freewill means no mana, no hp protection and they will just stand here doing nothing until someone tells them to do something. Not very useful.¡± [I can still use my inner voice. I wonder if I can use it to command my body?] ¡°And we put a slave collar on this one why then?¡± ¡°Because she resisted the suggestion necklace. Remember, dangerous.¡± [Body give them the silent middle finger for 1 second.] Sam feels her hand flip off the duo before returning to normal. ¡°Did you see that?¡± ¡°See what?¡± ¡°I thought I saw her move.¡± ¡°You¡¯re letting what I told you about how dangerous they are get to you. No one can move in a slave collar they don¡¯t have the will too.¡± [Ha, fear me!] ¡°Let¡¯s take her to the duke before someone sees us. Slave follow me. You know some of the nobles have problems with this. Rather not have to deal with them.¡± The three of them walk down the hallway lit only by a half moon from outside. [Their collar isn¡¯t working right, maybe my cheating caused a disconnect between mind and body? Cheating for the win! Wonder were this duke is, hopefully outside the town in some estate.] They move through back hallways and a few secret passages before exiting out far from the building they were just in. [I should get a magic map and see if the UI can get an automap function. Remembering this is going to be a pain.] ¡°Wonder if the other groups had as hard a time as we did with this one.¡± ¡°Doubtful, it was just two pretty boys. Unlike you they probably didn¡¯t drool over their targets chests.¡± ¡°She was asleep how was I supposed to know she would wake just then.¡± You could be reading stolen content. Head to Royal Road for the genuine story. ¡°Dangerous.¡± ¡°Screw you.¡± Continuing to skulk in the shadows the guides take several back alleyways. [I always hated the auto follow function in games. Takes away the thrill of exploration. Getting lost. Eaten by a bear. So boring. Also I¡¯m surprising chipper about this slave rape thing. Is it shock or just an odd effect of the slave collar?] Going through another hidden passage and the three find themselves outside the city by a couple of horses. The guides mount the horses. ¡°Slave give me your hand and then pull yourself up and ride behind me.¡± Sam does as she is told. After ten minutes [Are we there yet?]. Another five minutes [My ass hurts, horses suck.] Another two minutes. [I¡¯m not touching you. And are we there yet?] Another minute. [But Moooom it¡¯s hiiiis fault.] They arrive at the estate a bit later. The two guides dismount next to the stables. ¡°Dismount and follow me slave.¡± [I have a name you know, bet you forgot it. Well or maybe I never mentioned it.] The guide Sam is following goes to the back door while the other just waits with the horses. After knocking a servant lets them in and takes them to a room with a gaudy bed. An older and slightly rotund man stands from the chair. ¡°You have brought her! Very good. My servant will pay you, now leave.¡± ¡°This is a bad idea. They are dangerous.¡± ¡°Give me the key and leave.¡± The duke commands. Sighing the guide hands over the key and leaves the room shutting the door behind him. [And now I just wait a bit¡­] The duke glances at Sam¡¯s body clad only in bra and panties. ¡°Yes, you are truly exquisite. Truly fortunate that you resisted the necklace and gave me this chance to enjoy you.¡± The duke keeps staring at Sam as he slowly comes closer. He¡¯s obviously savoring the moment. [Body kick his groin as hard as you can.] Sam¡¯s body moves like it was waiting for the order and delivers a powerful kick shattering the duke¡¯s hp bar and perhaps other things. Without a sound the duke falls to the ground unconscious. [Well that went better than I thought it would go. Body search for the key.] Sam looks for the key and finds it. [Body put key in lock. Then turn the key.] Sam tries to turn the key but it doesn¡¯t move. [Body turn the key the other way.] The lock clicks open. [Body take off the collar.] Sam reaches up and takes off the collar. And Sam can now think and move normally again. Sam stops moving as she tries to control her returned emotions. She hugs herself and shivers at all that has happened to her so far. [No time for that. I need to keep moving.] Sam shakes her head and opens up her menu. She clicks the inventory button and is rewarded with access to her item bag. Putting on her black leather gear and taking out her weapons she feels much better. To stay somewhat stealthy she does not put on her metal helmet or breast plate. Sam heads to the door then pauses. She heads back to pick up the slave collar and takes a picture of it. Then puts it on the duke. After locking it she tosses the key into the partially filled chamber pot making sure it¡¯s hidden from sight. She debates with herself on if she can use the duke in some way. However Sam has no idea how to get the duke to wake up. Instead she decides to escape and get as far away from here as she can. Feeling it¡¯s been enough time to wait for the guides to leave she exits the room. Chapter 9 - Theft and Impromptu Camping Exiting the duke¡¯s bedroom into a dark hallway Sam takes a moment to consider where to go. From what she has heard it sounds like other kingdoms and races have summoned heroes as well. Even better they don¡¯t use mind control devices to control them. However with no knowledge of this world she has no idea where to head to. She did see a mountain range and knows natural barriers like that are often used as borders. It also has the advantage of allowing her to follow the river upstream so she doesn¡¯t have to worry about finding water. She¡¯ll still need food and money for travel. Transportation and knowledge about this world would be nice as well. Since the guides brought her by horseback she figures that¡¯s a common way to travel. Sadly Sam has never ridden a horse before today so she decides to ignore them. With no knowledge of how to saddle, take care of or ride she will likely be slower than just walking on her own. As for knowledge she could try interrogating a servant. But that has problems as well. Her questions could give away what she is planning and torture is notoriously ineffective way to get accurate information. She¡¯s also unwilling to inflict pain and kill an innocent person anyway so it¡¯s best for her to just go. Hopefully along the river she can find a small out of the way village to hold up in and ask the people about this world. Sam travels back the way she was original brought in. The half-moon light through windows gives her enough light to see by but still blurs the details of most objects. She doesn¡¯t bother to look into the rooms on this floor as she figures they are mostly bedrooms. Traveling to the stairwell she walks down it and now should be on the ground floor. She starts to open the doors carefully. The first room she looks into she sees several work desks. She¡¯s about to close the door when she notices a small box on one of the desks. Entering the room she tries to open the box but is unable to as it has a sturdy built in lock. Picking it up she shakes it and is rewarded by the sound of metallic clinking. Perhaps this is a money box she thinks. She stuffs the box into her item bag to open later. A quest window appears before Sam. ¡®Learning on the job (Rogue)¡¯ Uncommon (E rank) Steal from the duke and escape capture. The quest is easy but the penalties for success or failure are severe. Quest failure: Killed or captured. Reward: Gain level 1 in rogue job. Extra: On success the Kingdom of Kalgren will label you as a wanted criminal. Do you accept? Sam can¡¯t really see a downside so she accepts the quest. She figures she is already going to be a wanted criminal and if she¡¯s captured¡­ Well best to hope she is killed instead she thinks. She looks into several more rooms. Some are empty and others have medieval tools that she can only guess what their purpose is. The next room she looks into is filled with barrels. The barrels or their contents aren¡¯t useful to her but hopefully she is getting close to the pantry or kitchen. A room later is the kitchen. A low fire is lit with a pot of something above it. Taking off the lid of the pot she sees a brown stew simmering. Looking around she doesn¡¯t see any food left out. Seeing a door in the back of the kitchen she finds it leads to the pantry. Success. However she quickly learns about medieval cooking much to her dismay. After looking into several boxes and containers she finds everything is stored as raw ingredients. Also no meat, fruit or other perishables as those will be bought in the morning and used in meals that day. Everything she finds will take hours to prepare. Since her cooking skills are on the level of hit a few buttons and wait for the food warm up she doubts she can even prepare it if she had the hours anyway. Heading back to the kitchen she decided to experiment with the stew a bit. Filling a bowl she puts it into her item pouch. She shakes the pouch and then removes the bowl of stew. She¡¯s delighted that the bowl hasn¡¯t spilled. Taking another bowl she fills it and puts it in the item pouch but is disappointed by the fact it doesn¡¯t stack with the first bowl. Sam is able to put five bowls total into her pouch which should give her a few days of food. Before she leaves she decides to take a small risk and quickly eats two bowls of stew. The stew is surprisingly tasty. Full of many complex flavors and a variety of different textures. She opens up her menu and takes several pictures of the stew bowls. Perpetual stew ¨C Also known as hunter¡¯s pot. Is a stew into which kitchen left overs or anything edible one can find is place into it. Rarely is the pot completely emptied and more liquid and ingredients are replenished as needed. The flavor is usually complex and improves with age. It¡¯s not uncommon for such stews to be months or even years old. Well that sounds disgusting but she has to admit it¡¯s very delicious. Before leaving she takes one of the spoons and puts it into her belt. Exiting the kitchen and continuing on her way she makes it outside of the mansion without encounter anyone. She heads to the stables. Although Sam can¡¯t ride she is sure that the people sent after her can. Let¡¯s make that a little more difficult and slow to do. Sam opens all the internal stable doors and hopes the horses will wander off on their own. She doesn¡¯t hit them or attempt to lead them out as she doesn¡¯t want the noise to wake anyone up. Next she finds the bridles and saddles. Using her dagger quickly cuts through all the leather straps. Hopefully that will be enough to slow down her pursuers. But the biggest delay will be from how she handled the duke. If she had just killed him she would have the entire kingdom looking for her for killing a high noble. But by leaving him alive in an embarrassing situation she hopes the duke¡¯s priory will be on making sure no one finds out. If this happens any pursuit will be slow to start and only a few people to keep everything secret. Also as the servants don¡¯t know much about her they won¡¯t do anything until they find the key and get the slave collar off the duke as well. It¡¯s all a gamble but she should have decent odds of it working out. With nothing else to do she heads to the river. Being a nobles estate the duke¡¯s mansion was built overlooking the water so she doesn¡¯t have far to go. For the first mile she walks upstream in the river to lose her scent. Sam has no idea if they have tracking dogs but it can¡¯t hurt. After that she walks quickly along the bank as it¡¯s faster than walking in the river. She keeps a good pace that rapidly puts distance between her and the estate. Unlike her old modern body this new one has high physical stats and can easily keep walking for hours she finds. She walks all night and continues to walk during the day. This would be a pleasant hike in the woods if she wasn¡¯t in so much danger. As it is Sam doesn¡¯t take in the sights and doesn¡¯t do anything except focus on keeping her pace from slowing down. Even with a fit body and not sweating much she still is taking frequent drinks from the river with the exertion she is making. By midday she stops to eat another bowl of stew. She takes the time to wash the spoon and bowl before putting the bowl back into her pouch. Although Sam has no real use for the bowl she doesn¡¯t want to leave anything that can aid her pursuers in tracking her. While washing she gets a popup for completing the escape quest and gains lv 1 in rogue. Opening up the menu she takes a picture of it and finds out its call a magic fish. Wonderful naming that. She pulls out her curved one handed kriegsmesser and buckler. Also takes up the plow stance for mid guard. This is just holding the sword out from her about waist height however she gets the feeling her stance is wrong. Another attack from the magic fish and Sam stumbles as she tries to dodge and swing at it at the same time. Unlike the game there doesn¡¯t seem to be any skill assistance and she is feeling her inexperience as she attempts to swing her sword around. The magic fish starts another tackle. She¡¯s glad the magic fish seems to have poor aim and its movements are very predictable. It turns awkwardly after an attack, aims in her general direction and attempts to ram in a straight line. However Sam is fairing no better as she continues to haphazardly dodge and her sword swings are nowhere near hitting the magic fish. She continues to have the feeling that her stance, footwork and swings are all being done wrong. It¡¯s obvious that she has little idea of what she is doing. But it doesn¡¯t make any sense that she is getting feelings of doing it wrong. Sam has never trained in the German sword school so has no idea what the right form should be. All she has done is read the fighting book for a few minutes. Well maybe if she tries the one swing she remembers the book describing. Next time the magic fish tackles she doesn¡¯t try to dodge and focuses on just doing the correct sword swing. And misses. The magic fish tackles her and her hp lowers a bit more. However on that swing her feeling of doing it wrong was much less. Trying again she swings and this time hits the magic fish sending it¡¯s hp to the red. Even better she felt for the first time her swing was done correctly. The next swing Sam badly injures the magic fish and it flops on the ground before she does a final swing to finish it off. Sam takes another picture of the cut up magic fish and gets a new entry, magic fish (ingredient). Not having room in her item pouch to carry it and not sure if it¡¯s poisonous she tosses the remains back into the river. If she continues to encounter it she should be able to gain more information. Before she goes on she tries a few more practice sword swings. The first few she intentionally makes them very awkward and receives very strong feelings of doing it wrong. As she gets closer to the correct swing those feelings are reduced and a couple times she even gets a slight feeling of doing it correctly. The game had a skill assistance system. As a player¡¯s skill raises they gain a bonus to their actions and the system would autocorrect their movements. However this world instead uses a form of hot and cold feelings to give feedback. Just to be sure she switches her job to peasant and tries a few sword swings. Even the worst ones give her no feedback confirming her suspicions. Switching back to the swordsman job she spends a half hour practicing the plow stance and the one swing she knows. Sam doesn¡¯t want to spend any more time not moving but at least having one somewhat correct sword technique should give her some advantage if she has to fight again. The rest of the afternoon Sam continues to encounter magic fish. Unlike her first encounter she easily deals with them and completes her monster entry. Magic Fish: A normal fish mutated by an overabundance of mana in the area. They gain the ability to float and breathe air. Only active during the afternoon. Like most magical beasts they are territorial and will attack those they see as threatening. Individually they are very weak but during spawning season can swarm in large numbers and are active all day. Also the ingredient entry is completed. Magic Fish (ingredient) Can be used to make any fish dish. Like most magical beasts the absorbed mana makes the ingredient both delicious and poisonous. Proper draining of the mana is required before the ingredient can be used. Improper draining will lead to a flavor loss as well. As the mana in a magic fish is very weak the poison and flavor enhancing is also very weak. In an emergency she will eat magic fish but prefers to avoid if possible. She suspects the very weak poison will just cause cramping and diarrhea. Even a mild ailment can slow her down and increase her chances of being captured. She stops to eat some stew in the early evening. As there is still sunlight left she continues to walk upstream. Like the magic fish entry detailed she doesn¡¯t encounter any more magic fish during the evening. Once it starts getting dark she finds a soft patch of ground to make camp. As Sam has no idea how to make a camp fire and not wanting to attract attention anyway this is mostly her just curling up. With the length of the day she is guessing its early summer and shouldn¡¯t become too cold at night. It doesn¡¯t take long for her to fall asleep as she has been walking for many hours. Her final thought is she should¡¯ve stolen a blanket before she left. Chapter 10 - Bears and rabbits, and villagers, oh my! Some days a person just knows upon waking that this day will be a bad day. Sam knows today will be a bad day. She couldn¡¯t sleep much last night. The constant fear of being captured. The unfamiliar sounds of nature. The feelings of loneliness with no one to turn to. The lack of warmth of a nice cozy bed. All of it weighing down on her with no relief in sight. Even with the first light of dawn her mood doesn¡¯t improve. Waking up with damp leather clothes, long hair that annoying clings to her face even when tied in a braid and the smell of herself after walking for hours. Sore muscles, blisters on her feet and hunger in her stomach from rationing her food. Sam is miserable and she can¡¯t even take a bath in the river as it would leave her vulnerable to attacks. At least she can soak her feet a bit in the cold river and have a nice warm morning stew. The one light in her life right now is the stew she stole. It stays warm and is the most delicious thing she has ever eaten. Really the stew is only passably good but with how badly everything else is going for her by comparison it tastes like ambrosia. Feeling better after savoring her stew and cleaning her feet Sam begins the grueling self-imposed forced march anew She wishes she could take the time to read more about sword fighting or learn about magic. Sam has always enjoyed learning and magic is sure to have something that can improve her current comfort level. However any slow down on her part increases her risk of capture. ¡°Damn the guides, their king, and this stupid crapsack world! I hate it all. But I will not give in.¡± Sam screams out. Sam thinks to herself that she¡¯ll need to learn more about this world system as well. It likely has defects she can exploit. However Sam needs a safe place and time, two things she doesn¡¯t currently have much of, to do so. The morning is cold but is quickly warmed up by her rapid walking. Her mood also begins to improve once her body heat and the sun dry off the morning dew that collected on her hair and clothes. Even her pain lessens as the runners high begins to take effect from the constant movement. Now if she just had some deodorant this death march could be upgraded to just running scared for her life. By mid-morning she encounters a familiar sight. A horned rabbit taking a drink from the river. Charging she attacks the poor stress relieving mob. A few sword swings later and she now has one horned rabbit in her inventory. The used stew bowls stack and so now has room for monster kills. Checking her completed horned rabbit entry she sees it¡¯s much like the magic fish. Horned Rabbit: A normal rabbit mutated by an overabundance of mana in the area. They gain a horn and a taste for meat. Only active during the day. Like most magical beasts they are territorial and will attack those they see as threatening. Individually they are very weak. Mostly they become prey for more powerful magic beasts or new adventurers. The rest of the day passes much the same way. Walking with the occasional pause to relieve stress on a horned rabbit or magic fish. By nightfall she has 2 stacks of horned rabbit carcass and 2 stacks of magic fish and 1 stack of empty bowls all stacked to 5. If Sam knew how to cook or drain the excess poisonous mana from them she would be set for food. But as it is she is not looking forward to tomorrow. Sam will need to make a choice of going hungry or experiencing what very weak poison and bad cooking will do. That is if she can even start a fire. Sam decides she¡¯s far enough away from civilization to open up the lockbox and see what¡¯s inside. A few hacks with her zweihander she is rewarded with a crumpled box and some coins. 7 copper and 2 silver¡­ it isn¡¯t very much for her or the duke she stole it from. The servants must have used most of it to pay the guides for bringing her to the duke. Combined with her coins from the game it brings her total to 7 ironwood, 14 copper and 5 silver. Sam had spent most of her cash on the expensive noble room at the game inn before being summoned. In hindsight that was a horrible idea. But planning for summoning to another world is not something Sam has done often. At least coins don¡¯t take up an item slot in her pouch. Still if this world is like the game that is not much at all. The coin system is straight forward with ironwood, copper, silver, gold, and pure mithril. Each is worth 100 of the previous coin. With large ironwood, large copper, silver crown and gold crown which are bigger and worth ten times each coin respectively. Finally the gold bar worth ten thousand gold coins. Crowns and bars are usually only used by merchants or nobles for large transactions. Farmers mostly barter for goods or use ironwood or copper coin for daily trading. While tradesmen use silver for more expensive tool purchases. Gold is only used by nobles and merchants for luxury items. With 5 silver she has is around 5 days at a cheap inn or perhaps 10 days of prepared traveling food. If you spot this story on Amazon, know that it has been stolen. Report the violation. Pure mithril was listed in game as a coin type but Sam and no one else ever found a pure mithril coin. There was some speculation it would be used in high-end equipment. Perhaps a hard to find ingredient only handed out in special events but no one was really sure. Sam tosses the remains of the lockbox into the river before enjoying another unrestful night in the woods. Waking up the next morning much the same way as yesterday she knows today will be worse. With no warm stew to cheer her up and her blisters now turned into open sores Sam is in a much worse mood. Filling up with water and getting little relief from cleaning her feet she starts walking. She encounters several horned rabbits and uses the only sword swing she knows on them. Since Sam has been using it so much she decided to take the time to look up its proper name as it has been bugging her. Mittelhau or middle hew is a simple stroke delivered from side to side. Sam is terrible with foreign names so she decides to call it horizontal slash instead. So far it has worked well for her. As she uses it Sam can tell it is becoming easier to perform and more effective against the magical beasts she is encountering. It seems like a simple action but getting the timing, targeting and range just right for the best effect is challenging to do. Although with how weak her current opponents are it hardly matters she can tell being skilled in basic sword swings will come in handy against more powerful opponents. At least if her opponent remains oblivious to her using the exact same attack over and over and doesn¡¯t adapt at any rate. Encountering another horned rabbit Sam charges. The horned rabbit attempts a counter tackle but Sam is expecting it. Horned rabbits always attack in the same way every time. Making it easy to bash its head with her buckler and leaving the horned rabbit stunned. A quick follow-up with two horizontal slashes from her kriegsmesser and the horned rabbit is defeated. Kneeling down to pick up the carcass she is interrupted by a loud roar from close by. Looking toward the woods she notices a large black bear running at her. Tossing the carcass at the bear¡¯s feet she sprints down the river bank. Happily the bear seems more interested in the horned rabbit then in her and stops to eat the free meal. Sam pauses to take a picture of the bear before running away. She has read many stories about the ferocity of normal bears and has no interest in finding out if she can defeat it. A little bit latter she looks at the entry with the bear picture. Partial Magically Corrupted Bear. The picture shows a large black bear but it has boney growth on its shoulders and she can see some patches of red on its fur. Sam hopes she doesn¡¯t run into those again. A few hours later Sam runs into the bears again. See worse day than yesterday was. This time though the bears are focused on fishing at a three foot high water fall and leave her alone. Sam goes well out of her way to go around them. She also completes her entry on the bears before she leaves the area. Partial Magically Corrupted Bear: Bears in the process of being transformed by an overabundance of mana into magical beasts. More powerful animals require stronger mana and longer periods to corrupt. Several years is not an uncommon time frame. Once they being to change they seek out mana to complete the transformation often eating lesser magical beasts for it. She even sees one completely red bear with large boney horns from its shoulders but is only able to get its name. Ember Bear. Sam gets the feeling she is headed toward some kind of greater mana concentration area. The magical beasts she is encountering are getting more numerous and more powerful as she heads upstream. She doesn¡¯t have much choice in her path however so she continues to walk upstream. Taking a moment to think about her situation she decides to leave her metal gear in her item pouch. Although it would give her better defense Sam decides that it¡¯s better to be lighter and escape battle from more powerful monsters if she can. By early evening Sam is starting to consider eating her mana poisoned rations and seeing what the results will be. Between walking and constant attacks by magic fish and horned rabbits she is very hungry. However she spots several smoke plumes not too far from where she is and goes toward them to investigate. Several minutes later she comes upon a village by the river. She is happy but also surprised a village can be out here. The constant attacks by magic beasts aren¡¯t much of a problem for her but NPC¡¯s in game were much weaker so presumably the peasants of this world are equally weak. Between having no wall and the likely event of hungry bear attacks she wonders how they can survive out here. With the prospect of a nice bed to sleep in and warm food to fill her stomach Sam quickens her pace and heads toward one of the bigger buildings with smoke coming from its chimney.
