 Chapter 1: The Fox Born Without A Tail

    It was the middle of the afternoon a girl with shoulder length orange hair was running down a stone pathway "Gotta hide" the girl said and she saw a bush come into view "Perfect!" she smiled and she rushed right into the bush and stayed hidden inside she peeked through a hole in the bush her ears ontop her head flickered trying to make out any sounds coming her way. For a while she heard silence and the wind blowing then she heard the sound of running footsteps and two boys came into view they had long orange and white tails flowing behind them as they ran like the girl they had ears ontop of their head the two boys where foxs spirits and she was as well the two fox boys stopped in their tracks and looked around "Where did she go?" the one on the left said looking around "I don''t know I lost sight of her back by the shrine" the one on the right said looking around as well. The young fox girl watched as the two fox boys continued to look around the one they were looking for was her they had been teasing her all day long and suddenly they started chasing after her "Please, just go away" she said lowly so they wouldn''t here her she watched the two fox boys look around aimlessly looking for her "Man,she''s not here" the fox boy on the left said "She has to be around here she ran this way" the fox boy on the right said the fox girl held her breath thinking that breathing would give away her hiding place "Come on just leave already" the fox girl said to herself. For a few more seconds the two fox boys looked around for here the fox boy on the left groaned loudly "Come on, she''s probably gone man" he said the fox boy on the right looked at him and sighed and nodded in agreement "Yeah, your right" he said "Man for a no-tail she sure can run fast" the boy on the left said hearing the fox boy''s word the young fox girl grew irritated hearing the nickname everyone teased her with but she couldn''t let herself be controlled by her emotions she had to stay hidden "Your right about that ole'' zero tails sure can run" the fox boy on the right said with a grin the fox girl grumbled to herself her irritation level and rage building "Calm down, don''t let it get to you" the fox girl said to herself she had a calm face but on the inside she with seething with rage "Maybe zero tail ran home like a baby" the fox boy on the left said with a laugh that was the last thing the fox girl could take her anger at it''s peak. Without thinking she rose from her hiding place "Who are you calling a baby!?" she shouted the two fox boys looked over at her and smiled then the fox girl realized her mistake "Found you zero tail" the fox boy on the right smiled "Your so easy" the fox boy on the left said "Game over" he added the fox girl sighed deeply after a few minutes the two fox boys had the fox girl by the arms and where carrying her off somewhere "Come on guys don''t do this!" she pleaded "You know the rules Zero Tail" the fox boy on the right said "If you get caugth you go for a little dip" the boy on the left said "Please! Can we talk this out!" the fox girl said with a smile "Nope" the two fox boys said with a smile the fox girl groaned as she saw the lake coming into view the three stopped in front of it "Ready for a swim Zero Tails?" the fox boy on the lef chuckled the fox girl looked at the water and grimmaced the water in the lake she was about to be thrown in was very rancid smelling since it was home to a swamp spirit the fox girl closed her mouth accepting her fate she nodded the two fox boys looked at each other and smiled "1" counted the fox boy on the right "2" counted the fox boy on the left the fox girl closed her eyes "3!" the two foxs boys shouted together and then they pulled the fox girl back and tossed her into the water with a splash "Seeya tommorow Zero Tails!" the fox boy on the right shouted the one on the left just chuckled and they left the lake leaving the young fox girl by herself floating down to the bottom of the lake. The fox girls rage was at an all time high but it soon faded when the thought of what she could do came to mind "I wish I had a tail" she said to herself "Mayako" called a female voice the young fox girl opened her eyes when she did she wasn''t at the bottom of a lakebed anymore she was in her bedroom in her bed she wipped her eyes and yawned she looked around and saw an older fox girl with four tails behind her looking at her with an annoyed face "Ah.." the fox girl said upon seeing the older fox girl "Yone-neesan" the fox girl said fallowed by a yawn "Morning" she said with a half asleep smile "Don''t morning me!" the older fox girl shouted she was the younger fox girls older sister Yone Matsuyama and unlike her older sister had four tails and the younger fox girl herself her name was Mayako Matsuyama and she had no tails whatsoever to speak of "Don''t you have any idea what time it is!?" Yone said tapping her foot on the floor Mayako gave a confused look she turned her head and looked at her clock by her bed. The time read 7:30 am "Is it really that late?" Mayako asked scrathing her head "Yes!" Yone shouted Mayako chuckled "I was having a really imersive dream" she said with a smile "Seriously, you need to stop spending so much time up during the night when you should be sleeping" Yone said crossing her arms "Sorry, can''t help it I''m a night fox" Mayako said with a grin Yone gumbled in annoyane "Whatever, just get out of bed and get dressed" Yone said as she started for the door "You don''t want to be late again do you?" she said as she walked out "Late?" Mayako said to herself then it dawned on her "School!" she gasped and she threw the covers off of her and hopped out of bed and she started throwing off her pajamas and she went to her closet and took out a school uniform and she quickly slipped it on she made her way to her chester drawer and pulled the top drawer open inside were several pairs of white stockings she took a pair out and slipped them on she made her way to the bathroom a mere inches away from her room and looked at herself in the mirrior her ears flickered ontop her head she grumbled seeing her hair a mess she took a comb and passed it through after combing her hair to her liking she examined herself in the mirrior. Everything was perfect except for the absence of her tails she let a small sigh excape from her mouth she was now 15 years old yet she still didn''t have a tail when she was a kid Mayako thought her tails would come out as she got older but that didn''t happen and it made Mayako believe she''d never have a tail in her life she smiled to herself in the mirrior and she left the bathroom and she headed downstairs Mayako walked into the kitchen where the scent of breakfast filled the room she was met with her sister Yone and her father sitting at the table when she sat down her father looked over at her "Ah, finally up Mayako?" he said "Yeah" Mayako said "Honestly, you need to think about you activities" Yone said as she pecked at a plate in front of her "Hey I get by fine okay so leave me alone" Mayako said "Why you" Yone growled her tails ruffled behind her "Now now, Yone calm down" her father said Yone immediatley calmed herself and her tails went back to their original state "Yes father" Yone said and she went back to eating her breakfast Mayako looked over at her father "Did Keishi-niisan come back yet?" Mayako asked "No, he''s still out there" her father answered "Oh, I see" Mayako said a sad look on her face Keishi was her older brother he was older then Yone which made him the oldest sibling amongst the Matsuyama siblings and he was vastly different from Yone her brother had seven tails meaning he was much stronger then Yone and definatley he was stonger then Mayako who had no tails whatsoever that cause her brother to be called to solve any problems he''d be gone for days and then he''d come back home and he''d be so exsaughsted that Mayako couldn''t spend time with him her father gave a smile "Don''t worry Mayako your brother''ll be back soon" he said "It is Keishi we''re talking about" Yone said "Your right" Mayako said and her face brightened at that time her mother walked in "Ah, finally down here are you Mayako" her mother said walking over to her "Yeah, Yone-neechan woke me up" Mayako said "I see, well let me get you some breakfast" her mother said Mayako nodded and her mother walked off to the counter that''s when Yone got up from the table taking her empty plate in hand "You''d better hurry up before your late" Yone said as she placed her empty dish in the sink she walked over to the counter and picked up a book bag and slinged it over her arm "See you dear" her mother called "I''m off" Yone said "See ya'' when you get back" her father called Yone walked out the kitchen Mayako heard the front door open and close her mother placed a plate of food in front of her "You''d better eat fast" her mother smiled "Kay" Mayako said and she quickly did away with her food she was about to grab her plate and walk to the sink but her mother took it from her "Let me handel this you should leave now if you don''t want to be late" her mother said walking over to the sink "Thanks mom" Mayako said and she got up from the table "Seeya when I get back dad" Mayako said and she kissed her father on the cheek "Be careful Mayako" her father said with a smile "I will, and I hope Keishi-niisan get''s home while I''m gone" Mayako said with a smile her father smiled and nodded Mayako walked out the kitchen and to the front door. She spotted her bookbag by the door where she had left it the last time she came back from school she picked it up form off the floor and slung it over her shoulder she found her shoes and slipped them on and she headed out the door. Moments later Mayako was rushing down the stone pathway from her house she didn''t want to be late the teacher on duty today was really scary as she ran two shadows rushed passed her and stopped in front of her Mayako stopped on her heels trying not to slam into the two figure standing before her she gave a groan of annoyance "What do you two want?" she asked standing in front of her were the two fox boys from her dream but they had aged just like she did but unlike her their number of tails had grown since they were kids "Well, if it isn''t old Zero Tails" said the boy on the left his three tails swishing behind him his name was Kentarou Yumura"What''s the rush Zero Tails?" the boy on the right said with a smirk his four tails swirling behind him his name was Youmaru Yumura the two of them where brothers "Look, I''m about to be late for school,I don''t have time for you idiots!" Mayako shouted "Ouch, that really hurt didn''t it Kentarou?" Youmaru said looking at his brother with a smirk "Sure did Youmaru" Kentarou said smirking back "It really stings when it comes from Zero Tails here" Kentarou said Mayako grumbled lowly "Aw, is Zero Tails getting mad?" Youmaru teased Mayako gurmbled again Youmaru was right Mayako was getting mad "Like I said, I have no time for you idiots" Mayako said "So get the hell out of my way!" she said and she dashed at them Kentarou and Youmaru smirked and stepped aside allowing Mayako to rushed passed between them but she didn''t notice Kentarou''s foot sticking out and it tripped her and she fell to the ground she groaned lifting herself from off the ground "Watch where your going Zero Tails" Kentarou sneered "Yeah, you could hurt yourself" Youmaru chuckled Mayako looked back at the Yumura brothers with their sneering face she scowled at them she could feal a fire burning inside of her "Aw, sorry, did I make you mad even more?" Kentarou said with a grin Mayako growled "You little.." she said and she walked up to Kentarou and wheeled back her arm and let her fist fly right into Kentarou''s face the smirk on his face was replaced with one of surprise and pain and Kenarou went to the ground "Kentarou!" Youmaru said seeing his brother fall to the ground Kentarou looked up angrily at Mayako holding his face "Oh, your going to get it now!" Kentarou said Mayako smiled nervously she had just made a big mistake. Kentarou got up from the ground "You okay bro?" Youmaru asked "Yeah" Kentarou said "Youmaru, let''s get her" he said "Right!" Youmaru smirked and they looked at Mayako with devilsh smiled Mayako laughed nervously knowing she messed up big time "Look at that, I should really be going" Mayako said backing away from the Yumura brothers "Oh Zero Tails" Kentarou said in a singsong voice Mayako truned quickly and started running away "Get her!" Kentarou shouted and Mayako heard the Yumura brothers chasing behind her "Come on Mayako you have to lose them!" she said to herself as she panted hard. Mayako looked around for a place to lose the Yumura brothers while she ran but she couldn''t see anything that appealed to her to make matters worse she could hear the Yumura brothers gaining up on her "We''re going to get you Zero Tails!" shouted Kentarou "Your going to go for a swim when we catch you!" Youmaru shouted Mayako picked up her pace if Mayako had one thing going for her it was her speed she knew even though she had no tails that she was still faster then the Yumura brothers nostalgia soon set into Mayako running away from the Yumura brothers brougth her back to when she was a kid and they would chase her everywhere and she''d be tossed into the lake where the swamp sprirt lived and she smell rancid for days no matter how many showers and baths she took. Mayako ruhsed down the stone pathway an image of her as a kid running the same path showed up beside her she looked over at it and frowned "I''m always running aren''t I?" she said to herself looking at her younger self running like she was with no tail flowing behind her "If I had a tail this wouldn''t happen" Mayako said to herself all other fox spirits teased her for not having any tails and because she was from the Matsuyama Family the most revered fox spirit family it made it even worse why couldn''t she be like her older sister and brother. Mayako continued to be chased down the path she was still looking around for somewhere to at least duck into until the Yumura brothers left her alone but she still didn''t see a thing there was only one option left "I''ve got to make it to school!" she said if she made it to school the Yumura brothers would have to stop persuing her she smiled "Okay, lets do this!" she said psycing herself up and she kicked it into high gear and took off like a bullet "Lets see them keep up when I''m at top speed!" she smiled to herself she looked back and didn''t see the Yumura brothers behind her any longer she thought she had lost them for a second "No! I can''t let my gaurd down!" she said thinking maybe they''d ambsuh her the moment she thought she was safe and slowed down so Mayako kept up her pace a few feet of running later she saw the enterance of her school come into view and she grinned sweat was dripping down her face she picked up her speed for the final strech she saw the duty teacher standing by the gate looking at a watch and then at her barreling towards the school when she got inches closer to the enterance the duty teacher smirked "Your about to be late Zero Tails Mayako" the duty teacher said in a gruff male voice he was a tanned and tall and muscular man with long black hair he had two big swirling horns on his head his name was Ryugo he was a sheep sprit and he was really scary when he was mad Mayako gave a last spurt of speed and she was able to pass the gate line when she saw she arrived at her goal she came to a stop she doubled over and took hard breaths in and out she wiped her sweaty forhead and straightened up panting a little bit she turned to Ryugo "Ma..Made it" she huffed giving a thumbs up to Ryugo "Yes, and not a moment to soon" Ryugo said with not so much as a smile Mayako grumbled at Ryugo''s attitude "Zero Tail!" came Kentarou''s voice Mayako looked and saw an out of breath Kentarou and Youmaru running to the enterance Mayako stepped back a bit "Seeya Ryugo-sensei!" Mayako said and she fast walked her way into the school building Ryugo nodded "And, you two.." Ryugo said senseing the Yumura brothers closing in on the enterance "Are late" he said and he grabbed the enterance gate and threw it closed before the Yumura brothers could pass though "Aw man!" Kentarou said stopping at the gate as did his brother "You two will see me after class" Ryugo said with a smile Kentarou and Youmaru''s bodies shook inside the halls of the school Mayako made her way to her class she walked in and went sit at her desk she dropped her bookbag and she slammed her head onto her desk "Agh..my legs are killing me" she groaned her legs were on fire she never ran at her full speed for so long before "Hey why are you so out of shape?" came a female voice Mayako looked up and saw a girl with long white and brown hair she had bear ears in her head and she smiled at Mayako with a fang poking out her mouth Mayako smiled "Hey Kumaruro-san" Mayako greeted the girl was Kumaruro Kumagi a bear spirit and Mayako''s best friend since childhood "Hey, so why the no energy look?" Kumaruro asked sitting in the desk next to Mayako''s "Hugh, I had to run from Kentarou and Youmaru again" Mayako groaned "Those punks are still giving you trouble?" Kumaruro asked Mayako nodded Kumaruro clicked her tounger "You should do something about those jerks" Kumaruruo said "Wish I could" Mayako sighed she could deal with the Yumura brothers if she had at least one tail "Oh yeah" Kumaruro said having forgotten about Mayako''s condition. Mayako sighed "I wish I had a tail or two" Mayako said "Don''t worry! Who knows you might grow more tails then the two of them combined someday!" Kumaruro said "Thanks" Mayako smiled Kumaruro smiled back "In the meantime want me to break their legs?" Kumaruro said with a smirk and she pounded her fist into her hand "No no! It''s fine Kumaruro-san!" Mayako said she knew first hand about Kumaruro''s strength and knew she wouldn''t just break their legs Kumaruro in her rage had once shattered an entire tree that she got a ball stuck in when they were kids "Okay, but if you change your mind just holler" Kumakuro said Mayako nodded and gave a light smile the teacher walked in as the bell rang "Alright everyone to their seats!" the teacher ordered students moved to their desks "See you at lunch" Kumaruro said with a wave and she went to her seat after all the students in the class were sitting in the correct seats the teacher began calling roll Mayako looked around the room looking at her other classmates some had long tails behind them some had horns on their head and some had wings and animal apendages Mayako''s school was a school made only for Spirits and only spirits could find it "Alright, may I have your attention!" the teacher said finishing the roll call all the classes attention was on the teacher "Today will be a Measurement Day, you know what that means" the teacher said the classroom erupted into talking Measurement Day ment seeing how much power each student had Mayako shrank back in her seat she hated when it was Measurement Day "Why did I get to school on time today.." Mayako grumbled anticipating the laughingstock she would be again showing that she still had no power to speak of even though she was now fifteen "Can this day get any worse.." Mayako asked herself.  Chapter 2: A Unexpected Measurment

    Mayako stood in the line going into the nurses office she was standing behind Kumaruro and she would occasianlly peek out from behind her to see how far up the line had moved "Why are you so antsy?" Kumaruro aksed seeing Mayako peek around her for the fifth time in a row "I''m really nervous about this" Mayako said "What''s there to be nervous about?" Kumakuro said "People finding out I still haven''t gotten any stronger since the last Measurment Day" Mayako said "Oh" Kumaruro said in realization "Don''t worry I''m sure something will be different I can feal it in my gut" Kumaruro said with a smile "Maybe your just hungry" Mayako said with a smile back "Possibly, but I''m serious I feal like something will change for you today" Kumaruro said "I hope so" Mayako said giving the best smile she could. The line moved up and Mayako could see the door of the nurses office come into view it was wide open and some students were walking in and out some with smiles on their face others had sad looks on their face Mayako watched each and every student that got checked come out looking at the expression on their faces then Kumaruro walked in Mayako stopped she was the next one to go inside she swallowed hard the teacher inside made sign for her to enter she hesitated for a bit but Measurment Day wasn''t something you could skip out off so she walked in she saw many other students still inside the nurses office some were talking to each other some of the ones Mayako passed were talking about what their Measurment went. When the other students saw Mayako enter the room they started snickering "Hey,isn''t that the girl they call Zero Tails?" came a female voice Mayako''s ears flickered hearing her awful nickname "Yeah, that''s her she''s fifteen and she still doesn''t have a tail" came another female voice "Isn''t her sister Yone-senpai?" said a male student "Yeah, she is, she really gives Yone-senpai trouble doesn''t she" a female student said Mayako bit her lip her inner rage was rising again but she kept her head and continued to walk to the nurse "Why is she even here?" said a female student she passed by before getting to the nurse who was just finishing up measuring Kumaruro "Well, Ms. Kumaruro it seems you''ve gotten much stronger since last time" the nurse said it was a female nurse she had long raven black hair and her eye were shining gold she had huge black wings coming out her back an ID clipped to her shirt said her name was Kuromi Yuyen she looked over and saw Mayako standing in wait "Ah, Ms.Matsuyama,a pleasure to see you again" the nurse said said "Hello again Kuromi-sensei" Mayako said giving a quick bow Kuromi was a friend of her mothers so she knew Mayako very well "Hows your mom doing?" Kuromi-sensei asked "She''s fine, you should come visit when you get the time" Mayako said "That''s good, and I''ll try dependng on how much work I''ve got stacked up" Kuromi-sensei said "Okay" Mayako said "Has Keishi come back home yet?" Kuromi-sensei asked "No, he''s still out doing his job" Mayako said "I see, that brother of yours sure does know how to make people worry for him" Kuromi-sensei said Mayako smiled and gave a nod. Kuromi-sensei smiled back and turned her attention back to Kumaruro "Getting back to you" she said "Your power seems to have grown temendously since last time what have you been doing?" Kuromi-sensei asked Kumaruro scrathed her head "I''ve been doing the normal thing I do every day" Kumaruro said "And that would be?" Kuromi-sensei asked "Breaking things with my bare fists" Kumaruro said Kuromi-sensei laughed lightly "I see, well that would make you stronger if you do it each and every day" she said "Anyway, your done" Kuromi-sensei said tapping her on the back her eyes becoming a pale blue "Thanks Kuromi-sensei" Kumaruro said and she walked away from Kuromi-sensei she stopped by Mayako and gave her a pat on the back "Gut feeling" she said with a smirk Mayako smiled "Next" Kuromi-sensei said Mayako''s smile faded and she sighed and walked up to Kuromi-sensei "Now, lets see" she said and her eyes started to glow again it was Kuromi''s special ability she could measure the power of any spirit she looked over Mayako and hummed to herself Mayako felt a lump in her throat as Kuromi-sensei kept looking her over from behind her she could hear the other students talking about her "You think Zero Tails got any stronger since last time?" said a female student "There''s no way it''s Zero Tails were talking about" replied another female student fallowed by laughter "She still doesn''t have a tail" a male student said "How can she claim to be a fox spirit when she doesn''t even have a tail?" chuckled another male student "If it weren''t for the ears Zero Tails could pass for a human" a female student said with a giggle Mayako just stood still hearing all the nasty comments about her. The rage inside of her was growing by the minuet she gripped her fist tight "Why do these guys have to say all these things about me" she said to herself she felt something inside her begin to burn the same feeling she had from earlier when the Yumura brothers were messing with her remebering that and the time when she was younger and they chased her and threw her into the lake made the buring grow stronger it felt like something was trying to come out of her Kuromi-sensei gave a confused and intrigued hum as she looked over Mayako who was seething with rage over remebering all the teasing she endured through out her life being a fox spirit without a single tail then suddenly she felt the buring sensation erupt from her and she felt a weird wave of energy flow over her the nurses office erupted into a shared gasp Mayako had no idea why or what caused it she looked at the students in the room the all had shocked looks on their faces even Kumaruro did Mayako looked at Kuromi-sensei and she had a grin on her face yet Mayako had no idea what she was grinning about then she heard a swishing sound coming from behind her. Mayako turned around quickly but she saw nothing but still the swishing sound ehoed in her ears she turned around once more and still saw nothing still the swishing persisted and then she felt something fluffy touch the back of her neck she turned her head and her eyes widened Mayako couldn''t believe what she was looking at "What?" she said a bit surprised seeing a bright orange and white tail swishing back and forth behind her she rubbed her eyes thinking it was an illusion but when she opened her eyes again it was still there se pulled her cheeks and it hurt which made her confirm she wasn''t dreaming she stared to laugh then the laugh grew louder as she watched the fluffy tail move behind her "I..I don''t belive it!" she shouted happily she grabbed the fluff of the tail and it plushed in her hands it was very soft and warm it was real "I..I..I''ve got a tail!" Mayako smiled and she rubbed her head against her very first tail "Congrats Ms.Matsuyama, as of today you are no longer a Zero Tail" Kuromi-sensei said with a smile Mayako looked at Kuromi she was so happy she jumped at her and hugged her "Kuromi-sensei! I finally got a tail!" she said "Yes! Yes! I''m happy for you but can you let me go!" Kuromi-sensei said trying to break free from Mayako''s hug Mayako quickly released her "Sorry! I''m just so happy!" Mayako said and she petted her tail softly feeling it''s every fiber pass through her fingers "If you don''t mind I still have a measurement to do" Kuromi-sensei said Mayako blushed and she let go of her tail and it went back behind her and it swished back and forth "Sorry" Mayako said Kuromi-sensei just smiled and continued her work and looked over Mayako again "My my" she said as she looked over Mayako a second time "What?" Mayako asked with a worried look "Is something wrong?" Mayako asked "No no, nothings wrong" Kuromi-sensei said "It''s just the power that flowing off of you now is tremendous" Kuromi-sensei said "Leave it to a Matsuyama clan member to have so much power with just one tail" Kuromi-sensei said "Re...Really!?" Mayako said Kuromi-sensei nodded Mayako smiled brightly she threw her fists into the air that caused a torrent of blue flames to erupt behind her which made some of the other students gasp Mayako looked behind her seeing the blue flames swirling behind her "Oops" Mayako said blushing in embarassment she smiled at Kuromi-sensei with an innocent face Kuromi-sensei sighed "I''m happy you have a tail and all, but remeber you still don''t have control over your power yet" Kuromi-sensei said "Sorry Kuromi-sensei" Mayako apologized "It''s fine, just do something about the fire before it burns my office to ashes" Kuromi-sensei said "Of course!"Mayako said and she raised her hands and tried to bring the flames down but nothing happened "Uhm.." she said and she looked at Kuromi-sensei "How do I do that?" Mayako said with an unsure grin Kuromi-sensei facepalmed and sighed "Geez, your just like your mother aren''t you" Kuromi said Mayako smiled innocently and laughed lightly. Kuromi-sensei sighed "The only way to get rid of your fox fire is with a stronger foxes fox fire" she said "Could someone go get Yone Matsuyama" Kuromi-sensei said looking at the students who were looking on in amazement at Mayako who shuddered hearing her older sisters name "I''ll go get her sensei" Kumaruro said raising her hand Kuromi-sensei nodded "Go quickly if your not back in time this office and possibly the school will become ash" Kuromi said "Right!" Kumaruro said and she ruhsed out the room some of the other students from in the hall were now looking in the ones in the room where slowly stepping back watching the spreading blue flames. Seconde later Kumaruro came running back Yone right behind her they busted into the nurses office Yone stopped in her tracks when she saw the spreading blue flames and her younger sister with an apologetic smile on her face a tail swishing back and forth behind her Yone scowled for a second but she turned her focus on the flames she extended her hand and shot her own blue flames at Mayako''s her flames engulfed Mayako''s and they fizzeled out "Thank you very much Yone-san" Kuromi-sensei said "You stopped the school and my office from going up in smoke" she said "Your welcome sensei" Yone said with a bow "Thank nee-chan" Mayako said Yone looked over at her younger sister and scolwed she walked over to her and crossed her arms Mayako''s ears dropped to the side as did her new tail "Nee-chan?" Mayako said her older sister just stood and scowled at her her arms still crossed "Care to explain yourself?" Yone said Mayako shuddered "Well.." she started "All of a sudden my tail appeared" Mayako said putting her tail in front of her "And I was so happy that I threw up my hands and.." Mayako paused she looked at the scorch marks from her flames on the nurses office floor "Fire came out" Mayako said. Yone gave a hum as she took in all the information she was given Mayako swallowed hard thinking Yone was about to yell at her but the her scowling face turned to a smile "Yone-neechan?" Mayako said not understading what was happening then Yone grabbed her in a hug "Oh! Mayako as your big sister I''m so happy for you!" Yone said "Nee-chan?" Mayako said looking up at her older sister "You finally got a tail!" Yone said looking at the single tail behind her sister the four behind her were swishing back and forth like Mayako''s and Yone hugged Mayako tighter "I''m so glad it finally happened!"     It was later in the day and Mayako was sitting in class still captivatied by finally having a tail she smiled and watched it move back and forth she giggled to herself each time it touched her neck or her skin "I still can''t believe it!" Mayako said Kumaruro couldn''t stand but be happy for her friend after she went through fifteen years without having a tail and to finally have one she didn''t fault Mayako for being so giddy over it Kumaruro took a seat in front of Mayako and turned to her "So.." kumaruro said Mayako gave a hum "Can I feal it?" Kumaruro asked looking at Mayako''s tail. Mayako thought for a bit then she smiled "Of course go ahead" Mayako said taking her hands off her tail and extending it to Kumaruro who grinned happily and she put her hand on it and passed her hand through the soft fur "Oh my gosh! Kumaruro exclaimed as she furiously passed her hands up and down Mayako''s tail suddenly she heard a moan come from Mayako Kumaruro looked at her and saw she was blushing rather hard and she was quietly moaning "What''s the matter with you?" Kumaruro asked "I..I..feal weird" Mayako said panting "What do you mean?" Kumaruro asked "I feal really hot all of a sudden" Mayako said Kumaruro gave a confused look. Then she felt Mayako''s tail twicthing in her hand she looked down at it and she gave it a light squeeze which made a moan escape from Mayako''s mouth Mayako quickly slapped her hand over her mouth her body then started quivering as Kumaruro squeezed her tail again Kumaruro blushed was touching Mayako''s tail somehow the cause of her current feeling that''s when Kumaruro remebered something she learned in class about fox spirits "Oh yeah! a fox spirits tail is really sensitive!" Kumaruro said then she looked down at her hands which were gripping Mayako''s tails she looked at Mayako who was almost at her limit realizing what was going on Kumaruro let Mayako''s tail go "Sorry!" Kumaruro apologized Mayako took her hand off her mouth and took in a breath "It''s not your fault, I should have remebered something like that" Mayako said her face still red her tail swished freely behind her.


    Mayako then remebered something that happened when she was younger she had wanted to know what a tail felt like so one day she reached out and grabbed one of Yone''s tails and her sister reacted the same way although at the time Mayako didn''t have a tail so she had no idea why her sister became like that but now she did "So that''s why nee-chan acted so weird when I grabbed her tail" Mayako said Kumaruro gave a laugh and Mayako laughed back in turn "So.." Kumaruro said "What?" Mayako asked "How come now of all times did you grow a tail?" Kumaruro asked Mayako held her chin in though "Good question.." Mayako said she grumbled as she thought of the reasoning as to why her tail suddenly appeared after so long "Maybe there was some sort of trigger" Kumaruro said Mayako looked at Kumaruro with a confused look "What do you mean trigger?" Mayako asked "Like, maybe something you did triggered it to appear" Kumaruro said Mayako gave a thoughtful hum and tried remebering what lead up to her tail appearing she was in the nurses office and she was the next person up to get measured and she remembered hearing all the nasty comments the other students were making about her and with each passing moment her rage grew and then a burining sensation welling up inside her and then before she knew it she had her very first tail swishing behind her Mayako clued in on the rage and the burning sensation she felt inside of her as it rose then it clicked inside her head "Rage!" Mayako blurted out "Excuse me?" Kumaruro said confused "Rage! I was really angry hearing all the other students talking about me!" Mayako said Kumaruro still had a confused look on her face Mayako sighed "The rage was the trigger that made my tail finally appear!" Mayako said trying to get her point across Kumaruro finally caught on "I see, so because you were really mad your tail just decided to appear?" Kumaruro said summing up what Mayako had just said Mayako nodded "Well, looks like my gut feeling was right" Kumaruro said with a smile "Yeah, it was" Mayako smiled back.


    Later on in the day it was nearly time for school to be let out Mayako fidgeted in her desk she was anxious to get back home "Come on, come on!" Mayako said watching the clock hands move inch by inch like a hawk when it reched the time school let out and Mayako heard the bell ring she quickly picked up her things before anybody else and rushed out the door before the teacher could stop her she ruhsed down the empty hallway with a big smile on her face she glanced back at her tail as it blew in the wind as she ran moments later she arrived back home she busted through the door and she smacked right into someone "Ow!" she groaned rubbing her head "Hey what''s the rush squirt?" came a male voice that Mayako recognized Mayako looked up with a smile and standing before her was none other the her older brother Keishi with his seven tails swirling behind him Mayako lept off the ground "Keishi-niisan!" she shouted "Hey" Keishi said with a simple wave and smile Mayako couldn''t contain her excitement she jumped on her brother and knocked him to the ground in a hug "Ow! hey easy squirt!" Keishi said giving a grin "Keishi-niisan your finally back!" Mayako said "Yep, good to be back too" Keishi said and he patted Mayako on the head Mayako smiled brightly as her brother rubbed her head "So,how''ve you been squirt?" Keishi asked Mayako gave a giggled "I''m better then ever!" Mayako said "Oh? Why is that?"     It was a few weeks after Mayako''s first tail emerged during the yearly Measurement Day at school she was standing in the realm that her brother and sister used to train themselves it was a space overflowing with spirit energy Mayako could feal the energy course through her and it gave her a thrill she coudln''t believe after so long she was finally standing in the place her sister and brother trained "This place is so amazing!" Mayako exclaimed as she gazed at her surroundings giggling like a child Yone gave an annoyed grumble "Come on now there''s no need to act so amazed like that" Yone said "But this place is so amazing!" Mayako said "Still, there''s no time to be amazed we have to start training immediatley"Yone said with a stern look Mayako frowned "Yes nee-chan" Mayako said "Come on Yone, give the kid a break" Keishi said walking beside Yone "I think that''s not necassary right now" Yone said crossing her arms "Come on sis, she''s never been in here before let her have her moment" Keishi said Yone gave another annoyed grumble "You baby her too much" she said.     Mayako marveled at the sight of the bright blue flickering flames that danced in her sisters hand Yone opened her eyes and gave a smile Keishi pointed to Yone''s flames "This, is foxes fire" Keishi said "It''s the basic power all fox spirits can wealed" Keishi said Keishi gave a nod Yone nodded back and she arched her hand that cupped the blue flames back and she threw it and it landed on the ground and the flames spread quickly "Wow!" Mayako said "As you can see, a foxes fires power is determined by the number of tails" Keishi said Mayako gave a nod "Now, as you are just a one-tail yours won''t be that strong" Keishi said "That means that a fox spirit with more tails then you can easily burn out your foxes fire" Keishi said something clicked in Mayako''s head "That''s what Kuromi-sensei ment!" Mayako said "Exactly, since Yone here is a four tail her foxes fire is stronger then yours" Keishi said "And mine is stronger then hers because I''m a seven tails" Keishi said and he extended his hand and with a woosh a great pillar of blue flames erupted from his hand Mayako marveled at the sight of the grand eruption of flames reaching the sky Keishi gave a smirk and like Yone he arched his arm back and threw the flames towards Yone''s and his engulfed hers and both flames fizzled out seeing that happen a thought popped into Mayako''s head "Why do both flames disappear?" Mayako asked "Ah, good question, Yone would you care to explain?" Keishi said looking at Yone who nodded "You see, foxes fire is special it''ll burn almost anything" Yone started "As a result if a foxes fire hits another foxes fire then both will burn each other out" Yone said "Even if it''s from a lesser tailed fox?" Mayako asked Yone nodded "Of course, why do you think both our foxes fire vanished in the nurses office?" Yone said.


    Mayako gave and intrigued hum "So, how long before I can control my foxes fire?" Mayako asked "Well, that all depends on the fox" Keishi said "What do you mean nii-san?" Mayako asked "Controlling foxes fire differes between each fox spirit" Keishi said "It could take you a few minuets or it could take you days" Keishi added "I see, how long did it take you Keishi-niisan?" Mayako asked "Me? Well, it took me at least a few minutes to get the hang of it" he said Mayako gave a inthused gasp "That''s amazing Keishi-niisan!" Mayako said "Good job squirt" Keishi said Yone gave a nod Mayako smiled widered she looked at the blue flames licking at the air in her hand it didn''t burn or anything yet she could feal that the fire was powerful she gave an estactic giggle "I know your happy and all but we have another part to do" Keishi said Mayako focused on her brother and nodded "Now, try to make it go away" Keishi said "How can I do that?" Mayako asked remebering how she couldn''t make the flames she caused to appear in the nurses office go away "Simple" Keishi said "All you have to to is draw all that energy back inside you" Keishi said "Really?" Mayako said Keishi gave a nod and Mayako looked at the blur fire in her hand and she focused on it trying to draw all the energy she put into it back inside her body it started slow at first but she could feal the energy from the fire going back into her then it started to pick up and slowly the fire in her hand grew smaller and smaller until there was nothing left and Mayako''s hand was bare "I..I did it!" Mayako exclaimed and she looked at her brother and sister who smiled at her "Good job" Keishi said "Thanks nii-san!" Mayako said "Now, practice doing that for the next few days" Keishi said "What!?"  Chapter 5: A Possible Second Tail!?

    It had been a few weeks since Mayako began training with Keishi and Yone she was constantly conjuring her foxes fire in the hope she could easily summon it when ever she needed Mayako thought it would be really easy seeing as how she pulled it off the first time but she was proved wrong multiple times sometimes she didn''t realease the built up energy at the right time causing nothing to appear sometimes she put too much energy into the fire and the flames blew up in her face there was also the time she absorbed the energy from the fire too quickly and it caused her to become sick and then when it looked like she had the hang of it her brother or sister would throw one of their foxes fire at her which caused her to loss her focus she even got hit some of the times. This was the third week she had been doing the same thing over and over even with all the set backs Mayako felt like she was improving.


    "Alright gather the energy" Mayako said as she stood in the center of the training realm her hand extended her clothes were a mess from all the failed attempts and the times she got hit with her older siblings attacks Mayako focused soely on gathering energy she waited until it felt right and she released it a small flame was produced Mayako smiled as she held the small wisp of fire in her hand "Okay that''s good" Mayako said she wanted to start off small and then add more energy to the fire Keishi had told her to practice that along with trying to control it so Mayako sent more energy into the flaming orb in short slow bursts.


    With each puff of extra energy the flame in Mayako''s hand grew larger seeing she was doing well she increased the amount she was putting in which was a big mistake as the foxes fire in her hand grew to fast and it exploded surrounding Mayako in smoke she coughed as the smoked cleared from around her her clothes now had burn marks on them and she had smuges of smoke on her face she grumbled and wiped the smuges off "I guess that was too much" Mayako said and she gave an annoyed huff "If I knew it was going to be so difficult then maybe I should never have gotten my tail" Mayako said her tail swished behind her and she looked back at it "No,I can''t say that" Mayako said as she watched her tail move back and forth it to was worn from the constant training as it smooth sleek fur was more ruffled and it smelled of smoke Mayako sighed "Is there an easier way for me to get this stuff down" Mayako said thats when Keishi entered the realm along with Yone "Hey, how''s it going squirt?" Keishi asked "It''s going well, I think" Mayako replied Keishi gave a smirk "What''s the matter having trouble?" Keishi asked Mayako hesitated she wanted to saw yes but she wanted to get the hang of foxes fire without anyones help "No, I got it, I''m getting real close" Mayako said trying to reassure Keishi.


    Keishi gave a skeptical look "Are you sure?" he asked "I''m sure! I can do this myself!" Mayako said scowling a bit Keishi just stared at Mayako for a while and smiled "Alright, if you say so, just holler if you run into trouble" Keishi said and he went off and started training on his lonesome Mayako felt terrible her brother only wanted to help her yet she lashed out at him for trying to "That was a little harsh you know" Yone said walking over to her "I know.." Mayako said with saddened eyes "You know nii-san can get called away at any time" Yone said "I know" Mayako said "He wants to help you while he''s here, maybe you should let him" Yone said Mayako looked at her sister and then at her brother "I know he wants to help me but.." Mayako said she looked at Yone "I want to do this on my own" Mayako said "You understand right?" she asked Yone gave a smile "Yes, but there comes a time where doing it by yourself gets you no where" Yone said Mayako felt a jolt in her heart "I understand nee-chan" Mayako said "Good, well I''m going to go practice on my own" Yone said walking passed Mayako "Okay" Mayako said as she watched her sister walk to an open area of the training realm she watched as her sister effortlessly conjured up her foxes fire and started throwing it every where and she could also make it disappear when she wanted it to.


    Mayako watched a while longer "I wish I could do that" Mayako said she then looked over at her brother he was running around the area he was in he had blue fire surrounding his fists and he threw punches at an imaginary opponent Mayako watched her brother in amazement "I hope I''ll be able to do something like that" she said she went back and forth watching her two older siblings training "They''re so amazing" Mayako said watching her older siblings psyched her up "I want to be as good as them!" she grinned and she extended her hand.


    "Alright! Lets do this!" she said and she went back to her training she let energy build up in her palm and when it came to the perfect point she released it and produced a moderatley sized ball of flames Mayako nodded and she started pouring energy into the flame slowly at first put she outputted more when she felt it was right to as her flame grew larger Mayako kept her focus "Alright that''s big enough" she said the flame in her hand was double the size it was before now she had to absorb it all back so Mayako slowly drew the energy in the flame back into her body she increased the flow thinking she could handel it but something felt wrong "Oh no.." she said with a worried look she felt a sick feeling wash over her the same she felt when she absorbed the energy too quickly she felt her stomach turn "Ah.." she groaned the logical option would have been to stop pulling in the energy but Mayako didn''t stop she decided to keep going she wasn''t going to let the energy sickness win so she decided to slow down the intake and the sick feeling started going away.

    Mayako gave a releaved sigh as she started to fell better but then it came back "Oh no..." she said her face turned pale "I must have put too much energy in" Mayako said her brother warned her about this that she could become sick if she absorbed too much spirit energy then her body could handel she felt her body start to ache "It''s too much.." she said feeling her body creak from the strain of all the energy she had coursing through her she gritted her teeth trying to beat the pain "No..I won''t let this beat me" she said as she kept going even though her body was screaming at her to stop she continued and the strain on her body increased but somehow she endured it she looked at her brother and sister who were still practicing on their own "I want to be like them" she said "I want to be like nee-chan and nii-san" Mayako said througout her life without having a tail she saw many people antagonize her brother and sister about her having no tail her brother and sister always defended her but she always felt terrible for being the cause that it happened.


    Mayako wanted to be as good as her siblings so she didn''t give them a bad name "Come on Mayako you can do this!" she said to herself she was starting to get frustarted with her self more so she was angry with herself her she was struggling to be like her siblings but something was trying to get in her way "Your a zero!" came a voice in her head Mayako gritted her teeth "Even if you have a tail your still zero tail!" said the voice "Shut up!" Mayako growled her rage was increasing "A zero like you can''t compare to those two" the voice said "I said shut up" Mayako said she hadn''t realized she had absorbed all the energy from the fire "You can''t be like them your a zero" the voice said fallowed by a snicker.


    Mayako bit her lip why was this voice putting her down "I''ll show you.." Mayako said at that moment the same burning sensation she felt in her body when her first tail emerged was swirling inside her "I''ll show you! I''m good enough to be equal to them!" Mayako said "No, A zero is always a zero no matter what happens" the voice said Mayako had enough her anger was now at it''s peek the buringing sensation inside her was surging trying to find a way out all at once Mayako expelled the energy she had built up inside of her and the buring sensation escaped her body as well Mayako''s mind went blank for a bit but when she came to and she looked at herself she had blue flames surrounding her she looked as the blue flames swirled around her "Wha..What is this?" Mayako asked herself.


    "Mayako!" came her brothers voice Mayako looked over and saw Keishi rushing over to her along with Yone "Nii-san! What''s going on what is this!?" Mayako said showing her brother her fire surrounded hands "Calm down Mayako" Keishi said Mayako nodded and took a breath and calmed herself  "Keishi,is that what I think it is" Yone said looking at Keishi who looked over at her "I belive it is" Keishi said "That can''t be that''s something a nine tailed could do" Yone said Mayako was confused "Uhm, what''s going on?" Mayako asked her siblings looked at each other "Should we tell her?" Keishi asked "It seems we don''t have a choice" Yone said "Nii-san, nee-chan what''s going on?" Mayako asked a bit worried "Alright settle down" Keishi said "This isn''t something to worry about" Keishi said "It isn''t?" Mayako asked Keishi gave a nod "Then what is this?"Mayako asked "Well you see.." Keishi started "It''s something called the foxes cloak" Keishi said "Foxes cloak?" Mayako said with a confused look on her face.


    Mayako looked at the fire enveloping her "Is there something special about it?" Mayako asked "Yes, you see the foxes cloak is something a nine tailed fox can do" Keishi said "N-Nine tails!" Mayako exclamied "You mean like dad!" Mayako said her father was the only nine tailed spirt fox in the world  Keishi gave a nod "Wha..What does it do?" Mayako asked "Well, it acts as armour, and it has a mind of it''s own and will protect you" Keishi said Mayako looked confused still "What do you mean protect?" Mayako asked Keishi gave a smirk and in a flash he threw a punch at Mayako''s face Mayako closed her eyes but she didn''t feal an impact she open her left eye and her right shot open in surprise her brothers fist was a few inches from her face and it was being held back by a wall of fire "See, that''s what it does" Keishi said and he took his fist away Mayako giggled estatically "This is amazing!" Mayako said "Not only does it protect you from regular attacks it protects you from sneak attacks" Keishi said Mayako became giddy she was so excited somehow she had learned a ability that was way to advanced for her and yet she did it with ease and she was a one tail Mayako jumped up and down in joy.


    "This is amazing!" she said then a though crossed her mind "I have to show dad!" Mayako said and she turned to run out the training realm but before she took a step further her brother called out to her "Mayako wait a second!" Keishi said "Hm? What is it nii-san?" Mayako asked he had a surprised look on his face as did Yone who looked like she was staring at something "Look at you tail!" Keishi said Mayako gave a confused look she looked at her tail and was shocked to see that a second tail had sprouted from the first and the two were conjoined "Wha..What the heck is this!?"Mayako said freaking out she grabbed the twin tail and it fluffed in her hand the second tail growing out from the first was real as the first "Nii-san what is this!?" Mayako said "Uhm..I think that is possibly a second tail" Keishi said Mayako''s eyes widened and she looked at the conjoined tail as it moved in her hand "A second tail!" she exclamied. [Ch.5 END]

 Chapter 6: The Key to The Tails

    Mayako''s mother and father were sitting in the kitchen in silence Mayako''s father looked over at his wife "I wonder how Maya-chan''s doinf wit her training" he said his wife looked at him "Come on dear that''s the fifth time this week you''ve asked that" his wife said "I know I''m just" he said "I know you can''t help but wonder since she only recently got her tail" his wife said he nodded his wife laughed lightly "Don''t worry dear her older siblings are with her" his wife said "Your right" he said with a smile at that moment the front door was heard being pulled open very fast "Dad! Mom!" came Mayako''s voice as her rapid footsteps was heard coming towards the kitchen her father looked at her mother with a puzzled look his wife shrugged "We''re in here Mayako" her father called.


    In no second flat Mayako came into the kitchen "Mom! Dad!" she said with an excited look on her face "What is it Maya-chan?" her dad asked "Did something happen while training?" he asked Mayako nodded her father smiled "What happened?" he asked a bit curious as to how her training was progressing "Well, for starters this happened" Mayako said showing her tail which had the second forming tail conjoined with the first her father looked at her mother and they both had the look of surprise on their face and they both smiled her father looked at her "Come here" he said becoking her to come to him Mayako walked over to him and he took hold of her conjoined tail and he felt it and a huge grin showed on his face he looked at her mother "It''s real" he said her mother smiled brightly.


    Her father looked at her with a prideful look "You just got your first tail a few weeks ago and now a second one is already forming" her father said marveling at his daughters conjoined tail "But it dosen''t look like it fully formed" he said looking it over once more "Will it fully form on it''s own?" Mayako asked "I guess it will" her father said and he gave a smile "How did this even happen?" her father asked Mayako told her father in detail what had happened up to the point where she saw her conjoined tail "I see" her father said "So, you say you were really angry and you felt a burning sensation inside of you" her father said summing up what she had told him Mayako nodded "Well, I think you''ve found your key to your tails" her father said "The key?" Mayako said confused "Yes, many fox spirits have a key that makes their tails grow" her father said "And it seems that you''ve found yours" her father said "So anger is the key to my tails?" Mayako said trying to make sense of what her father had told her.


    Her father nodded "But don''t think of using this key too often" her father said "Why?" Mayako asked "Anger isn''t something you want to gain power from too often" her father said "Power fueled by anger can make bad things happen" her father said "Understand?" he asked Mayako nodded she knew that when her father told her something she should listen and obey "Yes dad" Mayako said at that moment Keishi came into the kitchen Mayako turned hearing her brother walk into the kitchen "Keishi-niisan" Mayako said Keishi smiled "So, this is where you ran off to" Keishi said "Sorry" Mayako said with an apologetic face she had run off out from the training realm to show her father and mother her second forming tail with a word "Man your fast Mayako it took me a few hours just to get out from the training realm" Keishi said Mayako smiled "Why don''t you go back and train with Yone theres something I want to talk to dad about" Keishi said.

Keishi asked "Tell me what, about how her tail formed?" his dad asked Keishi shook his head "No, so she didn''t tell you" Keishi asked his father looked at his mother who was just as puzzled as he was "What are you talking about Keishi?" his father asked Keishi took in a breath "While she was traing Mayako she" Keishi still couldn''t belive what he had seen his younger sister surronded by blue flames with a confused look on her face "She used the Foxes Cloak" Keishi said silence filled the kitchen his father just stared at him and he glanced at his mother who had a shocked look on her face and he looked back "Are you positive?" his father asked Keishi nodded "There''s no doubt in my mind about it" Keishi said his father gave a affirmative ''Hmm'' "It seems that Mayako might be something special" his father said.


    Back in the training realm Mayako was busy training with Yone "No no no!" Yone scolded "Try it again!" Yone shouted Mayako groaned ever since she got back to the training realm her sister had become like a drill sargent shouting commands at her every few seconds she had been thrown into the training she had been doing for the past few weeks gathering energy and trying to get control of her Foxes Fire and every time she made  mistake her sister would yell at her and tell her to start over each time she tried her sister would watch her like a hawk if she noticed anything out of place she would yell "Come on sis lighten up" Mayako said as she focused on a flame in her hand "I''ll lighten up when you can do it without a mistake" Yone said Mayako groaned "Your techiniclly a two tail so you have to make sure you can control your new found power" Yone said.


    Mayako sighed and gave a nod and she focused her power at that moment she heard a whisper "Want me to help?" came a voice she looked at her sister "Did you say something?" she asked "No, don''t get distracted focus on what your doing" Yone scolded with a scowl "Right!" Mayako said snapping her attention back to the ball of blue fire in her hand "What was that?" she asked herself the whisper she had heard sounded just like the voice she heard when her second tail formed and she used the Foxes Cloak "What could that be?" she wondered all the while she focused on her training.
