    *BEEP* BEEP*BEEP*BEEP*BE- SLAM*

Dad groggily sat up in his bed, unhappy to be awake. The morning sun was just peeking through the window blinds, letting him know it was time to get up. NOT LIKE HE ALREADY DIDN’T KNOW THAT!

Dad:”Damn alarm clock waking me up on time. Just give me a few more minutes of sleep FOR CHRIST’S SAKE!”

Dad lazily got up and walked to the bathroom door located right next to his bed.  As he was about to enter, Dad picked up on the sound of running water coming from inside. He thought for a second.

Dad: (There is only one other person living here, and he usually isn’t up by this time.) Dad decided to knock on the door.

Dad:” Uh, Blake. You in there?” Dad was slightly worried but, that was put aside when a familiar gargled voice answered from the other side of the door.

Blake:”urgh hurgh”, blake said back to his father. ^1

Dad:”Blake, what did I tell you about speaking with your mouth full? Huh?”

Blake: “burgh you arshed meh ah quershon firsht” ^2

    Dad: “BLAKE!”

Blake: *spit* “Okay, okay dad! I’ll try not to do it again.” Blake noticed his dad making a satisfied face.

Dad:” Good! Any more than that and you would’ve spent the rest of the day in your room.”

Blake frowned a bit, glad he didn’t continue his little joke with his dad. He had almost lost the best, AWESOME, FUN, SUPER, ICE CREAM, GAME DAY, HE EVER HAD.

Blake : ( I can’t wait till we get out of here.  I’m going to play all the games, including that rolly ball one and OOOH, I’ll also-“) Blake was so caught up in his thoughts, didn’t noticed he started bouncing around the bathroom.

Dad:” Uh, you okay there sport, I almost thought you turned into a certain orange and blacked striped tiger.”

Blake immediately stopped bouncing, another frown apparent on his face. He didn’t like when dad treated him like he was two and he wasn’t going be compared to some stupid baby toy! Sadly, blake forgot he was in the very pajamas his dad just described.

Blake:”Dad, I’m not even little anymore! I don’t care about some stupid little baby toy! Everyone knows power rangers are the BEST!”

Dad simply smiled, happy that his son’s growth was progressing well.

Dad:”Alright sport, go get ready to leave. Pick one of the nice outdoor outfits I bought you a few weeks ago. Oh and make sure you get your phone off the charger.”

Blake: “ALRIGHT DAD, WOOOOOH!” Blake rushed out of the bathroom toward his own room, excited they were about to leave.

Dad: “Okay, time for me to get ready also. *sigh* ”

Dad quickly entered the bathroom. He had been holding a large piss in for quite a while, and was also amazed he didn’t explode on the spot. When he was done Dad took a quick shower, then went to take care of the rest of his morning hygiene. After he had finished all that he left the bathroom, intent on finding something nice to wear.

As he entered his closet, he went over towards the memory box. Right next to it was a small table that had a small cinnamon candle with a flame that flickered gently. Next to candle was a small, golden rosary with a diamond embedded in the middle. This had been Lara’s engagement gift, instead of the typical diamond ring. She loved to collect them in her spare time as a hobby, regardless of the price. Dad had always wondered how she managed this, until he met her parents. Man were they loaded!

Done with reminiscing Dad kneeled next to the table and prayed that today was going to be a great one. No interruptions, no drama, and especially NO IDIOTS that would ruin his son’s special day.  After he was done, he got up and simply pulled out an already folded stack of weekend wear he had in one of his clothes drawers and put on. Before Dad left the closet, he took a look in the mirror he had installed right next to his doorway. The simple white shirt he was wearing had simply stated, “I don’t give a flip”, on it followed by a rather plain pair of dark blue jeans. Nothing fancy, he’s just taking his son out for some fun.

Dad: (Alright, let me go get Blake so we can get out of here.)

Dad left his room and headed down the hallway towards Blake’s room. When he got there he heard quite a bit of shuffling from inside.

    Dad:”Blake you ready?”

    Blake:” Just a minute dad!”

Dad:”Blake! You should be already be done by now, what’s the hold up? We need to get going before the day ends.”

Blake:”I’m trying to find my phone dad….”

Dad sighed, frustrated that Blake had lost his phone, yet again!

Dad:”You know what, just leave it. We need to be out of the house before traffic really gets thick, come on!”

    Blake:”Alright dad.”

Blake opened the door a bit, peeking through to see exactly where his dad was. He was a tad bit sad he had lost his phone again, and really wanted to at least have it with him in case of emergencies. He opened the door the rest of the way and stepped out. Blake was wearing a simple white shirt with a picture of a pretty expensive boat on it, with blue shorts. He looked well groomed, not a stray hair or any sort of wrinkle in his clothes.

Dad: “Alright sport lets head out. Remember, act as natural as possible just like I taught you. We don’t need to give ‘them’ any excuse to search us up.

Blake:” Got it, don’t mess with the guard people.” Blake had a mischievous smile on his face.

Dad:”I mean that Blake! You do anything and we’re heading right back to the apartment!”

    Blake:”Ugh…. Okay Dad.”

Dad and Blake left their room and headed down the hallway they lived in. The floors had nice red carpeting with small tables here and there adorned with small bowls filled mints and tissues. The walls were lined with a very glossy wood that looked like someone had painted a layer of plastic on it. The ceiling had mini, glittering chandeliers separated by a few feet of space. Overall, it looked kind of fancy.

At the very end of the hallway was an elevator, guarded by two soldiers with very lethal looking guns. Dad and Blake needed to head to the ground floor.

As the two approached the elevator Dad gave the soldiers a quick salute and a greeting, followed by Blake. Although Blake was doing it mockingly.

Dad:” Hope you’re having a good day officers!” Dad gave a quick smile also.

Blake:”Yeah, hope you’re having a good day! Blake decided to disobey his dad a bit while his head was turned and stick his tongue out at the two soldiers, taking another chance to get the soldier to react.

The two soldiers standing at the did nothing but stare stoically in the same direction they were facing, They were trained to react ONLY to suspicion and threats. Little kids trying to taunt them obviously not counting as either. Blake sighed inwardly, disappointed that another attempt to get at the guards ended in failure.

Blake: (You’ll see, one day I’ll get you two to do something!) Blake continued on, resolute his wish will one day come to past.

When they were both inside the elevator, Dad took out his government issued ID card and used it to be scanned by the elevator. This was a security measure put in place to keep unwanted folks out of the upper floors of the building. Unless you’ve bought an apartment in the building, you have no hope of getting past the ground floor.

    Dad:” Ground floor please.”

The elevator responded with a small groan. Having seen MANY years of use, this was expected.

*DING* *You have arrive at GROUND FLOOR*

Dad and Blake stepped out of the elevator into the lobby. It was always a breathtaking sight to see. A huge chandelier hung from the ceiling looking as if it had nothing but beautiful diamonds hanging from it. There was four pillars, as large as the ceiling, the stood in the middle, seemingly keeping it from falling. The floors, pillars and walls were lined with the same shiny wood their hallways had, except there was fancy furniture everywhere. The windows near the front entrance was lined with really antique looking bookshelves holding many popular books currently out today. Overall it was pretty damn good looking and made you feel like you were loaded with cash to be here.

The place they lived in was The Golden Oaks Suites. Just like the fancy title, this place didn’t pull any stops. It was a sky scraper nearly 400 meters tall and had 10 floors. Why is it so tall and only have a few floors you ask? Because each apartment was pretty big, and depending on the floor you live on, they can get even bigger. Blake and Dad lived on the second floor which houses apartments suitable for a family of 3 to live pretty comfortably.

Blake and Dad approached the front desk clerk. He looked like your textbook nerdy character. Big round glasses, pimple covered face, and slightly greasy hair. The biggest  difference was the tuxedo, which didn’t really match him.

Dad:” I’d like to have one S.D.C. please with enough space for two people.”

Clerk:”Alright sir, just let me scan your card.”

Dad handed the clerk his government ID card. It really was an all-purpose card that could be used for just about everything. The convenience was real, but the restrictions attached to it also made it something not as desirable to use.

The clerk handed Dad his card back.

Clerk:” Okay sir, just step outside and your car will be right there in a sixty secs”

    Dad:”Alright, thanks kid.”

Both Dad and Blake headed out of the front door to await the car.

Blake”Oooooo, do we get to ride in the robot car again?”

    Dad:”Yes, and it’s not a robot, but a self-driving car. Remember that!”

Blake”Aww, I thought it was going to transform like the ones those stupid soldiers get to use.”

Dad:”Well, it’s not, and I told you to act normal Blake, don’t say things like that out loud!”

    Blake:”Oops, sorry Dad!”

Dad:”Alright sport. Ah, look there’s our car”

Pulling up to Dad was a sleek black car, with grey stripes down the middle that went from hood to trunk. If someone from the lower level would like inside, they’d be amazed to see that the car seemingly got here by itself and it DID. These self-driving cars were an exclusive addition to living in the Golden Oaks Suites provided free of charge to those who lived there.

Dad:”kay sport, let me scan my card and we can head out to Mandy’s.”

Dad slipped his card in a slot located on the passenger door handle. It checked whether the card scanned was attached indeed the same one used to request that same car.

Dad and Blake both got in the back seat and buckled themselves in.

Dad:” Set location to Mandy’s Ice Cream Parlor, avoid traffic if possible”

A case of theft: this story is not rightfully on Amazon; if you spot it, report the violation.

    *Command accepted, Starting journey*

The car slowly moved forward, weaving in and out of the ongoing traffic in order to get on the road less traveled.

As they were sitting in the car, Dad decided to go over the to-list for Mandy’s.

Dad:”Okay Blake, here’s what’s going to happen. When we first enter, GREET AUNTY MANDY! Got that?”

    Blake:”Yeeeeees dad.”

Dad:”Good, next I’m going to spending some time catching up with Mandy. I’ll give you a cup of coins to play as many games as you want, but when I call you over for ice-cream, you need to head right to where I am, no exceptions.”

Blake:”Coooooool! I can’t wait to play all those games espe-“ Blake noticed his father giving a rather displeased face.

Blake:”Yes yes, I hear you dad.”

Dad:”Lastly, when we are done we head straight home, no more games, you know security gets really tight at night, and I don’t want to run into any trouble. DO NOT TRY TO PLAY GAMES AGAIN! Got that?” Dad made a serious face emphasizing his point.

Blake gulped abit. He knew how hard and tempting it was not to go back and play those addicting games again. Blake sighed, disappointed he won’t get to play at the games for as long as he thought.

    Blake:” Okay dad…”

Dad:”Good. Ah, looks we are here.”

Dad and Blake stepped outside the car, and Dad scanned his card again to put the car into lock mode. They both headed to the front door of Mandy’s.

Mandy’s was old fashioned building hidden in between two humongous skyscrapers that housed more apartments. It had a big brown wooden sign that had white letters that spelt Mandy’s. Right next to it was a picture of an ice-cream cone and a tongue licking it. The building itself had a black roof with some overhang to it that gave quite a bit of shade. Below the roof, the walls of the building was made of a deep red brick with a revolving glass door at the front foremost wall that face the street. Many people could be seen leaving in and out. Some rich, quite a few middle class folks, and a few poor ones also. Everyone wanted some of Mandy’s ice-cream! It was so good, it earned awards from the president himself; good thing he lived right here in Washington! Dad and Blake decided to enter the parlor.

Right past the doors a bar could be seen directly in front but, instead of serving beer and alcohols, this was the place that you would order ice cream, coins, and anything else you needed to enjoy Mandy’s. To the left of the bar was the gaming center, and to the right was dining area, which seated many people.

Behind the bar was a woman in a white apron with a red shirt and blue jeans underneath and her hair, which was nearly dark grey, was tied up in a bun. She looked to be in her late sixties, but despite the age, her movements were pretty lively.  Dad recognized her as the woman who had helped him and Lara seal the deal for marriage, Mandy, the owner of Mandy’s Ice Cream Parlor.

The woman, who was bent over at the time, organizing something beneath the bar, stood up and made surprised face.

Mandy:” Oh my goodness….. its been a while Clyde” Mandy shed a few short tears and reached of the counter to give Clyde a hug.

Clyde(used to be dad) returned the hug, happy to see a good old friend he considers family again.

Mandy:”Well and who do we have here! Blake come give your aunt a hug!”

Blake made a worried face knowing what was coming. It was always more than just a hug with her.

Blake:”That’s okay I-I’ll just be over at the ga-“

Clyde:”Blake give your aunt a hug, NOW!”

Blake:”Dad please don’t me do this! She’s going to kiss me and pinch my cheeks and squee-“

Clyde:”Blake, do It or no games or Ice cream!”

Blake sighed reluctantly, unhappy that he would experience this physical trauma again. It always made him feel squeamish.

    Blake:”Ugh……. Fine dad.”

Mandy:”That’s the spirit. Now come here for your smooches you cutey!”

Mandy took this time to shower Blake with more love than he could handle, leaving him pouting next to bar. Although, he was happy the nightmare was over.

    Clyde”Good. Mandy, why don’t you hand Blake…….. let’s say…. A hundred coins?”

Blake’s sour mood immediately left him! A hundred coins is enough for a hundred games. He’ll have plenty of time to play and earn as many tickets as he wants.

Blake:”HOLY CRAP! SO MANY COINS, I CAN’T WAIT GIMMEEEE!”

Clyde:”Make that 50 coins now Mandy since mister potty mouth here likes to say bad words.”

Blake was surprised! Fifty coins was a huge blow, now he’ll burn through all his coins a lot quicker the way he plays.

Blake:”Are you serious!? I can’t play with just 50 coins! This is bull-“

    Clyde’s expression turned serious.

Clyde:”Make that 25 Mandy. Blake one more bad word out of you and were out of here. Then you won’t have to worry about playing anything at all”.

Blake sighed again, dejected he had lost most of his playing coins. He’ll be lucky to even win enough for a candy bar with this much. It requires pure skill to win some of these games! Who knows how many times he''ll have to try.

Mandy:”Wow Blake, good luck. I don’t think you’ll be getting much with 25. Hmmm, come here for a sec”

Mandy bend down to the same level Blake was in an attempt to whisper as close as she could.

Mandy:” I’ll tell you what, if you manage to win at one least jackpot with the 25 you got, I’ll give you one hundred extra coins, free of charge. Also, even if you don’t win anything, I’ll give you and your dad an extra ice cream”

Blake was pretty happy to hear this, finally a bit of hope after taking such a blow to his fun day.

Mandy: “Make sure not to tell your dad, he’ll be upset if he finds out I helped you.”

Blake:” Okay” Blake whispered back and he took off for the game center area.

Mandy: “Man that kid can be a ball of trouble sometimes, heck it seems like he’ll give you twice as much when he gets older”

    Clyde nodded in agreement.

Clyde:” I already know, heh. It seems like he’s already going through his rebellious phase before he hits his teenage years.

Mandy laughs along with Clyde happy that Blake was coming along nicely. But then Mandy’s face got a bit serious.

Mandy:” And now my boy, how exactly are you coming along? I know it gets lonely for ya raising a boy on your own. Found another woman yet?”

Clyde:” Ugh…. *sigh*. Not this again Mandy. I-I haven’t really looked.” Clyde’s face saddened a bit, as old memories started to surface.

Mandy: “Well, why not? Your still young, good looking, even a bit charming. Besides that damn forest you like to grow on your face.” Mandy let out a small laugh.

Clyde sighed again, not really wanting to keep having this talk, it always made him a bit depressed. The only reason he didn’t stop it was because Mandy’ was a really close friend of his, and he knows she really cares about him.

Clyde:”Look… I just don’t think my heart’s ready for another woman just yet. I think I’ll hold off a bit longer”.

Mandy took a good long hard look into Clyde’s eyes, seeming to almost stare two holes right through him. Inside, she noticed a bit of fear, anxiety, sadness and the biggest thing, a small hint of loneliness. It seemed to be a bit more evident since the last time he came here.

Mandy: (This damn fool is pushing himself too hard to handle a kid alone. He should know that kids become even more of handful as they get older, and he’s just not going to have all the answers like a proper mother and father would. Plus getting another lover would help him move on from that foolish oath he made to Lara. I bet it was easy for him to make it when Blake was little, but now it’s really only doing him harm. If he doesn’t find someone to share the burden with soon, he might do something he’ll regret. It''s not like he has much family to look to for help anyways. )

Or at least this is what Mandy thought.

Mandy:” You ought to go ahead and find yourself a nice woman. It’s okay to love again sweetheart, no ones gonna break your neck over it.”

Clyde chuckled a bit, thinking of a certain someone who might.

Clyde:”Blake might. The little sport’s always talking about the fun things he wants to do with his mother.”

Mandy sighed, feeling like she wasn’t getting much of anywhere.

Mandy:”Look here darling. It’s nice and all that Blake honors his mother’s memories and all that, but you know he needs a right and proper motherly figure in his life. It takes two for this really work out for the best. Try as you might to make up for what’s missing, but in the end you’ll only be hurting yourself and Blake. If you really want to help the boy out, do what you know is right in your heart.”

Clyde:”I-I-…..*sigh*. I’ll consider it Mandy, but I’m not gonna make any promises alright. I’ll just let time tell what will happen. I just hope life turns out for the better, for both me and Blake.”

Mandy:”Good.” Mandy took a good look at the clock. They had been talking about a good hour. Time sure flies when you’re talking with a good friend.

Mandy:”Why don’t you go ahead and call Blake over so we can have ice cream.”

Clyde’s expression brightened a bit more. Happy for the change of subject.

Clyde:” Good idea.” Before Clyde said anything he thought for a little, something was  bothering him.

Clyde:”You know what, Blake’s been out for a long time playing games for a person with just 25 coins. I wonder what he’s doing. Heh… he might be sulking in a corner somewhere, regretting have such a foul mouth today.”

Clyde looked over in the direction of the game center and called for Blake.

Clyde:”Blake get over here, time for ice cream.”

Clyde waited for a few seconds… then a few minutes. He started to get worried since Blake was taking so long. He decided to go find Blake for himself.

The game center was pretty big as it was the second best part about Mandy’s. It’s only competition, which held the number one gaming spot, was a certain animal themed established that had a bear as the lead singer.  Most of the games in the front had pretty with low payouts and no jackpots, the higher paying ones with jackpots, located in the back of the game center. There he found Blake who looked to be completely lost in doing something…. and Clyde couldn’t believe his eyes.

In front of Blake was what Clyde had to consider the biggest pile of tickets he had ever seen. Even HE almost fainted from such an absurd amount of tickets. Seriously! This was enough buy all the top shelf prizes and then some! What in the world had happened back here!? Just then, Blake had noticed his presence behind him and turned around.

Blake:”Hey dad, you done talking with Mandy?” Blake had a sly smile on his face.

Clyde:”HOLY SHIT! WHAT DID YOU DO!?”
