Chapter 297

Even though he knew the answer, he still asked, "Any luck finding it?"

"No," Aiden replied, his voice a tired whisper, evidence of three sleepless days and nights.

"Let it go," Charles murmured after a long pause. He closed his eyes, feeling as if

a piece of his heart had been ripped away.

    Two yearster, at the airport:

"Attention, passengers on Flight BA3491 to London. Boarding now..."

Hearing the announcement, Evelyn stood up and tugged her small suitcase toward the gate.

As she settled into her seat, a little girl, maybe four or five, ambled over, clutching a half-eaten ice cream cone. In a moment of imbnce, the girl stumbled toward Evelyn. Instinctively, Evelyn reached out to steady her.

The little girl regained her footing, but not before her ice cream sttered onto Evelyn''s wrist.

"Well-mannered, this one," Evelyn thought as the girl, with a sweet, soft voice, said, “Thank you, ma''am." Realizing the mess she''d made, she quickly tried to clean up. "I''m sorry, ma''am..."

"No worries," Evelyn smiled, charmed by the girl''s manners and cuteness, which brought memories of Charlie flooding back. Even after five years, thinking of Charlie still felt like a knife to her heart, tears welling up in her eyes.

"Oh..." The girl, helping wipe the ice cream, noticed the scars on Evelyn''s wrist. Jagged lines of varying depth crisscrossed her slender wrist, looking raw and frightening.

The girl''s face turned pale, and she let out a small shriek.

Nearby, a woman who had been watching, letting her daughter handle the situation, quickly stepped over when she saw her daughter''s fear. The little girl ran into her mother''s arms, and the woman caught sight of Evelyn''s scars too.

Evelyn, realizing she''d scared the child, swiftly pulled down her sleeve to cover

the marks, speaking gently, "I''m sorry if I frightened you."

The little girl, forted in her mom''s embrace, seemed to calm down. She slid from her mother''s arms and stood in front of Evelyn again asking softly, "Does it hurt, ma''am? I can blow on it to make it better."

Such a kind gesture from the girl reminded Evelyn of Charlie, leaving her heart defenseless. She gently patted the girl''s head. "Thank you, sweetie, but it doesn''t hurt anymore."

The ne was gearing up for takeoff.

The girl''s mom prompted her to say goodbye. The little girl waved sweetly and followed her mom to their seats.

As the ne soared into the sky, Evelyn gazed out the window, her fingers absentmindedly tracing the scars on her wrist, lost in thought.

Four hourster, the ne touched down at London Heathrow Airport. Evelyn pulled her suitcase behind her as she stepped out. After two years, she was back in London.

As she emerged, a familiar figure caught her eye. Without waiting for Evelyn toe to him, Brooks was already striding toward her.

He opened his arms wide and enveloped her in a hug. Evelyn let go of her suitcase and hugged Brooks back.

They stood there, wrapped in each other''s arms, before Brooks released her. Taking her suitcase in one hand and her hand in the other, they headed out.

Just then, they found themselves face-to-face with Charles, who was making his way inside.
